The blue torchlight flickered against the damp stone walls as we climbed the spiral stairwell. With every step, the stench of the chasm faded, replaced by the cold draft of the mountain night.

Ronan walked beside me, his tall frame taking up nearly the entire passage. His broken iron chains clanked softly against the stone steps, a steady sound echoing in the narrow space.

"The upper barracks are right behind this wall," I whispered, slowing down as we reached an iron grate set into the rock. "Alpha Dracon keeps twenty border guards here to watch the northern pass."

Ronan stopped, his eyes fixing on the iron bars. Shadows swirled around his knuckles.

"Then let us see if Dracon’s men can actually fight," he said.

I raised a hand, stopping him before he could smash the iron.

"No noise, Ronan. The main packhouse is celebrating my death down in the valley. If you make a sound now, Dracon will lock down the fortress. We kill them quietly, take their weapons, and move to the border."

Ronan looked at me, tilting his head slightly.

"You don't miss a thing, Vesper."

"I spent twenty years learning every blind spot in this territory," I said, leaning closer to the grate.

Through the bars, I could see a wide, high-ceilinged hall. Torches lit the stone pillars, throwing light over a dozen wolves in Ironfang leather armor. They sat around a oak table, drinking ale and rolling dice.

Weapon racks lined the far wall, stocked with broadswords, crossbows, and silver armor.

"The lock on this grate is rusted," I whispered, touching the iron bolt. "It opens right behind the weapon rack. If we move fast, they won't even reach their blades."

"I'll handle the guards," Ronan said, his voice dropping low. "Pick what you need."

He placed his palm against the rusted lock. Pitch-black magic seeped from his skin into the iron.

The rust turned to gray dust, and the bolt slid open silently.

Ronan pushed the grate open and stepped into the room's shadows.

I slipped through right after him, keeping my back pressed against the cold stone behind the weapon stands.

I held my breath, listening.

Across the hall, two guards leaned against their spears near the main wooden archway. Neither saw the shadow moving behind them.

Ronan closed the distance in a second. His hands shot out, grabbing both men by their throats.

With a fast, brutal twist, he snapped their necks. He caught their heavy bodies before they hit the floor and laid them quietly in the corner.

My heart hammered against my ribs, but my hands stayed steady.

Ronan kept moving. He stepped behind three guards near the fireplace, wrapping dark mist around their heads before they could even yell.

They dropped to their knees, silent.

Four more fell just as fast as Ronan struck their necks with his claws.

In under two minutes, all twelve guards were lying dead on the floor.

No alarm sounded.

No horn blew.

Ronan turned back to me, wiping a smear of blood off his jaw with the back of his hand. He pointed toward the weapon racks.

"Take what you want," he said.

I walked over to the stands, stepping right over a dead guard.

My eyes swept the iron blades. As a Null, I had never been allowed to touch a weapon. Cressida used to mock me whenever I looked at the armory, telling me I was too weak to even lift a knife.

I reached out and pulled a double-edged shortsword from the rack. It was lighter than a broadsword, made for fast, clean cuts.

I swung it once, testing the weight.

It felt natural in my hand.

Next to the blades hung a thick leather cloak lined with dark fur and silver shoulder guards. I pulled it on over my thin, blood-stained tunic, buckling the straps across my chest to hide the glowing mark underneath.

"You look ready," Ronan said, stepping up behind me.

He reached down and strapped a leather sheath to my belt.

"I'm not finished," I said, pulling the hood over my hair, leaving only my eyes visible.

"First, we take out the border gates. Alaric’s father left fifty men on the main road to the capital."

"And when we get there?" Ronan asked.

I pulled the shortsword from its sheath, letting the steel catch the torchlight.

"We leave no one alive to warn Dracon," I said. "By morning, the Ironfang Pack will find their border destroyed, their guards dead, and the daughter they threw away marching on the capital."

Ronan gave a short, cold laugh.

"Lead the way."

Maeve’s words hung in the air.Did you truly believe I didn't know you survived the chasm? My heart skipped a violent beat. A cold drop of sweat slid down the back of my neck. I tightened my grip on my shortsword, the leather wrapping digging sharply into my palm. I thought I had cornered her, but Maeve was looking at me like I was a piece on her chessboard.Ronan shifted closer. His massive shoulder brushed against mine. The furnace heat rolling off his body grounded me, chasing away the sudden chill in my blood. I took a slow, deep breath."You knew," I said, keeping my voice steady. "But you didn't stop me."Maeve stopped on the bottom step of the dais. She didn't look at Dracon, who was bleeding on the floor from his broken nose. She didn't look at Alaric, who was weeping quietly over his pinned hand. She looked only at the glowing gold mark on my chest."Why would I?" Maeve asked smoothly. "Alpha Dracon grew greedy. He tried to spill sacred blood to elevate his spoiled daughter."

The parchment scrolls slapped against the polished marble floor with a sound like a crack of thunder. They tumbled across the dais, unrolling until the dark red wax seals and Alaric’s jagged, arrogant handwriting lay exposed under the blinding light of the crystal chandeliers. The silence in the Grand Throne Room was absolute. No one dared to move; no one even seemed to breathe. Ronan’s crushing King’s Aura kept every guard, lord, and noble pinned to the stone floor, their chests heaving against the suffocating pressure.Alaric stared at the scrolls lying inches from his trembling knees. His face had gone from pale to a sickly, ash gray."Vesper... wait... listen to me—""Read them," I commanded, my voice slicing through the heavy air like a razor. "Or should I read them for you, Alpha? Should I recite the poetry you sent to my sister while I scrubbed the dirt from your boots? Or perhaps the blood-pact ritual where you planned to drain my life force on the winter solstice?"Whispers e

I gripped the hilt of my shortsword so tightly my knuckles turned white.Through the narrow brass spy-grate embedded in the stone landing, the Grand Throne Room opened up like a gilded cage. Floating crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over a sea of velvet tunics, silk gowns, and silver platters heaped with roasted meats. Over a hundred noble lords, Alpha leaders, and military commanders filled the hall, laughing and sipping wine, completely oblivious to the darkness waiting behind the walls. My eyes swept the floor, cutting straight through the crowd until I locked onto my targets.Alpha Dracon stood near the foot of the raised dais, puffing his chest out in a formal dark-red tunic, holding his goblet high. Beside him, Lysandra preened, her face painted with white powder and ruby lipstick as she gossiped with a circle of southern Duchesses. And right beside them stood Alaric and Cressida.Cressida wore a dazzling silk gown dyed in royal turquoise, a pearl tiara sitting crookedly o

The outer slums of the Royal Capital smelled of damp river mud, coal smoke, and cheap ale. Tall, ramshackle wooden tenements leaned inward over the narrow cobblestone alleys, blocking out the pale blue light of dawn.I kept my hood pulled low over my face, the dark leather cloak wrapped tightly around my body to hide my blood-stained armor. Beside me, Ronan’s massive frame drew wary glances from the few stray workers stumbling home from late shifts, but his dark shadow magic bent the dim morning light around him, blurring his features into an intimidating, nameless silhouette."Down this alley," I whispered, turning off the main thoroughfare into a tight, filthy lane lined with stacked timber crates. At the end of the alley stood a crooked, two-story stone house with boarded-up windows and an overgrown iron gate. A copper sign hung lopsided above the door, its faint lettering reading: Lower City Archival Records.I walked up to the heavy oak door and knocked three times—two quick taps

The high cobblestone highway to the Royal Capital stretched through the pass like an endless black ribbon under the pale winter moon. Behind us, the burning ruins of the Ironfang border post painted the night sky in ugly, angry streaks of orange and crimson. We walked in silence, our paces matched. The cold mountain air bit at my face, but the royal mark burning beneath my cloak radiated a steady, unyielding heat. Inside my chest, the shadow core hummed, entirely awake and hungering for the reckoning ahead.Ronan matched my stride, his dark cloak billowing in the wind like a set of heavy wings. His broken iron shackles clanked softly against his boots with every step."You are quiet, Vesper," he said, his deep voice carrying easily over the whistling gale."I am calculating," I replied without looking at him, my eyes fixed on the horizon. "The border guard is dead, but news of their silence will reach Alpha Dracon by tomorrow afternoon. When his patrol scouts do not return, he will as

The wind coming off the northern pass carried the sharp smell of pine and upcoming snow. We stayed low in the treeline above the valley road, hidden by the thick brush and the heavy shadows Ronan spun around us. Below us stood the Ironfang border checkpoint—a massive wooden fortress built across the narrow mountain gorge. Torchfire flared along the high palisade walls, illuminating thirty guards stationed on the catwalks. Heavy iron gates blocked the cobblestone road leading toward the Royal Capital, and at the center of the yard, two iron-reinforced towers housed heavy ballistas aimed down the pass. "Thirty on the walls," I whispered, resting my hand on the hilt of my shortsword. "Ten more inside the lower guardhouse, and six posted at the gate mechanism." Ronan crouched beside me, his towering frame perfectly still. His golden eyes swept over the fortress, calculating entry points with the practiced ease of a veteran commander. "They are relaxed," Ronan noted, his voice barely a
