Chapter 2

Author: Melan
Diana's POV

I refused to stay there and endure any more humiliation. After hurriedly slipping on my shoes, I walked out of the mansion as fast as my feet could carry me.

However, I had barely made it out of the gated community when a honk sounded twice behind me.

"Ms. Lacroix, Alpha Lucius has asked that you return."

My breath caught in my throat, and I instinctively took a step back.

Knowing Lucius the way I did after all these years, there was absolutely no way he would swallow his pride and make peace with me right after deciding I was just leaving in a huff.

Sure enough, before I could utter a word, the two bodyguards grabbed me and shoved me into the car.

I had no idea how much time had passed before they brought me into a room that smelled sharply of disinfectant.

It felt like a hospital.

A blindfold was tied tightly over my eyes, and my wrists were securely strapped to a bed.

Suddenly, a sharp, biting pain pierced the crook of my elbow, as if a thick needle was being driven deep into my vein.

Immediately after, a wave of biting cold and weakness washed over me as my body temperature gradually dropped.

They were drawing my blood.

Through the crack in the door, the doctor's muffled voice drifted in, speaking to Lucius. "Alpha Lucius, it's true that Ms. Lacroix is a natural-born healer, and her blood can soothe a turbulent pup during pregnancy.

"However, she was just sick a few days ago. She's incredibly weak. If we force a draw of this volume, she might—"

"Just do it," Lucius interrupted, his tone icy. "She's always been healthy. She just likes to play the victim. She'll be fine. Your only job is to stabilize Lucy and the pup in her womb."

A little while later, I heard Lucius' footsteps approaching. He ripped the black blindfold from my eyes, and the sudden rush of sunlight burned my eyes, nearly bringing me to tears.

"Does it hurt?" His voice carried a rare trace of comfort. "Just bear with it a little longer. It'll be over soon."

I turned my head away, refusing to waste my breath on him.

After losing so much blood, my head was spinning, and I could feel my lips turning blue.

Just then, Lucy's cough drifted from the master bedroom next door.

Upon hearing this, Lucius immediately slapped his hand down over the doctor's, stopping him from pulling the needle out, and demanded that they draw twice the amount.

"No, Alpha Lucius. If we take any more, Ms. Lacroix could die!" the doctor retorted.

"Cut the theatrics. A natural-born healer can't possibly be that fragile," Lucius insisted, firmly pinning my shoulders to the bed. "Besides, you can just hook her up to some plasma afterward to make up for it."

I looked up at him weakly. "Once you're done taking my blood, let me go, Lucius."

He froze for a moment before clenching his jaw.

"Diana, considering I needed you to give Lucy a transfusion this time, I'll forgive your attitude. But don't test my patience again. Our marking ceremony is right around the corner. Where exactly do you think you're going?"

The marking ceremony?

No, there wouldn't be one anymore.

I didn't utter another word, and I lost consciousness due to the sheer exhaustion of the blood loss.

Two days later, I opened my eyes to find Lucius sitting by my bedside, reviewing paperwork.

"You're awake. How are you feeling?" he asked, bringing a bowl of oatmeal over and awkwardly trying to spoon-feed me.

I shook my head. "I can do it myself."

Lucius' hand froze in mid-air, and his face instantly darkened.

"Know your place, Diana. You're the one who caused Lucy's injury. She's carrying a pup, and all we did was take a little of your blood. Don't let your title go to your head and use it as an excuse for all your temper tantrums."

My place?

The irony was that it was precisely because I finally understood my place that I knew exactly what I had to do.

I was a Luna whom he had never officially marked.

I had no real title and no rightful claim to anything here.

"I think Lucy is calling for you, Lucius," I said, intentionally pricking my ears up and pointing toward the door. "You'd better go check on her. If she gets worked up and it affects the pup, I'm afraid I won't have any more blood to give her."

The moment Lucius left, I quickly dialed a missed number on my phone.

Before I could speak, the voice on the other end came through the receiver, laced with anxiety. "Didn't we agree you'd come to me? Diana, did you change your mind?"

"I'm sorry. I just… ran into a bit of an emergency."

"An emergency? Why do you sound so weak? Damn it! This won't do. I'm coming to get you myself!"

Diana's POVInside the treatment room, Lucius leaned back against the headboard of his hospital bed with two broken ribs and half his face swollen.Sweat kept dripping down his face from the pain, but his eyes never left the door as it harbored a desperate, almost pathological glint of hope.He assumed that now that I had been dragged to the hospital, even against my will, I would inevitably fall back into old habits. He thought I would be hovering anxiously by his bedside with red-rimmed eyes, weeping as I begged the doctors to be gentle with him.Instead, the door swung open to reveal a doctor and a nurse, there to patch up his wounds."Where is she?" Lucius asked, his voice hoarse as he tried to sit up.His eyes darted anxiously around the room. "Where's Diana?"The doctor pressed a firm hand against his shoulder without much expression. "Mr. Ashcroft, we're going to need you to stay still.""Was she hurt?" Lucius demanded. "I need to see her!""She was shaken up," the doc

The afternoon sun streamed through the window, perfectly illuminating the fresh mark on my neck.In that instant, his eyes reddened once more.I didn't tell him that the very day I found out Lucy was pregnant, I had made an international video call and accepted Richard's solemn proposal.Richard had loved me since we were pups. Even if I was never going to get the future I had waited for, someone else still deserved to receive the answer he had been waiting for."Diana, I finally see what I did wrong," Lucius pleaded. "Please, can you undo the bond with him? I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you."As I watched him grovel at my feet, so desperate and humbled, I didn't feel a flicker of emotion.I slowly stood up, looking down at the wolf I had once loved so deeply that I lost myself in the proces

Diana's POVLucius eventually found me abroad. The day of the fire, I grabbed my luggage and climbed straight into Richard Mille's waiting car outside the mansion. After that, I turned off my phone, threw away the SIM card, and did my best to erase every trace of my scent.Yet, against all odds, he still managed to find me.The moment he saw me, the bouquet of white roses slipped from his grip, scattering across the pavement. The evening sun was dipping below the horizon. I was tucked firmly against the side of a tall, striking werewolf with an effortless smile on my face—a smile Lucius had never once seen during our years together. And on the curve of my neck sat a fresh mark.Lucius stared at me as if he couldn't believe his eyes. "Diana, who is he?"Feeling my shoulders go rigid, Richard subtly tightened his arm around my waist. "You must be Lucius. Let me introduce my mate, Diana.""The two of you? No, that's impossible!" Lucius roared. "There's no way you'd let another w

Lucius' POV"Lucius, is our pup okay?" Lucy asked. "I'm so scared… I have no idea why Diana suddenly snapped and attacked me like that…"She looked up at me with red-rimmed eyes as she buried herself deeper into my chest.I sighed. "Everything is fine. The doctor said the pup is perfectly healthy and completely unaffected by yesterday's accident. Don't worry, I'll make sure Diana answers for this."I pinched the bridge of my nose. For some reason, unease stirred in my chest.I checked my phone yet again, and still nothing. The fire had been brought under control almost immediately, but the sweep of the room yielded no sign of Diana anywhere. All through the night, no matter how many texts I had sent her, she hadn't replied with so much as a single syllable.I couldn't understand it.In the past, no matter how cold I was to her, she was always at my beck and call. Diana's POVLucy blushed and gave Lucius a playful smack on the chest. He chuckled as he apologized to her, but the whole time, his attention kept drifting back to me. When he realized I wasn't angry at all, his face darkened instead."Diana, what's your problem? You've been staring at your phone since you got in the car. Is being in the same room with Lucy and me really that boring to you?"I finally looked up and glanced at him with total indifference. "Were you saying something? Sorry, I wasn't listening."I locked my phone screen, having just finished booking my flight."Let me see that!"Before I could react, Lucius snatched the phone from my hand, his expression tight with displeasure."What's the passcode?" he demanded."My birthday."It was a simple six-digit code, yet he kept typing combinations until the phone locked him out, completely unable to unlock it.Of course, he couldn't. He had never bothered to remember my birthday. When we got home, Lucius helped Lucy

Diana's POV"Don't worry. Just give me a few more days," I reassured him.I was just hanging up the phone when Lucius walked back into the room to grab his files. When he caught a glimpse of the smile lingering on my face—a smile he hadn't seen in a very long time—his brows instantly furrowed."Who were you talking to?""My aunt," I replied, brushing it off.He didn't seem to doubt me. After all, he knew that for all these years, I had only ever had eyes for him, and my contact list had dwindled to nothing but a handful of female relatives.Picking up his documents, Lucius turned on his heel, his voice icy. "Something came up at the company. I'll be back tomorrow."I didn't respond.I knew him too well. Just like countless times before, tomorrow would come and go, followed by the day after, and the day after that, and he wouldn't show.Over the next few days, my phone was repeatedly bombarded with videos of him and Lucy. He was taking her to parties and social gatherings. He
