Chapter 2

Author: Emerald Woods
The werewolves had a tradition of skiing together after the first snowfall of the year. The pack was holding a skiing event that day, and Annie was joining in too.

I was putting on my protective gear when someone suddenly took it from me. Randy was holding a better set, and he helped me strap it around my knees.

"Annie and I picked this out for you. She said this is safer."

Before I could say anything, Annie called out, "Alpha Randy, can you teach me how to ski downhill later?"

Randy immediately walked over to her, and I stood where I was, watching them ski away.

He was the one who taught me how to ski. Back then, he was so eager to teach me that he nearly fell against an icy rock. I rushed over, grabbed his skis, and saved him just in time.

Randy had held me tightly in his arms and told me I'd saved him once again and that I was the only warmth in his life.

Now, his attention was all on Annie.

The snow covered a layer of ice, making the slope rough and uneven. Randy waited at the finish line and arranged for Annie and me to practice skiing together.

As we skied, Annie moved closer to me and spoke in a voice low enough that only I could hear, "Nora, sometimes, I really pity you. You waited year after year like a fool and got nothing out of it. I didn't have to do a thing, and he gave me a necklace of his own accord."

I glanced at the delicate moon necklace around her neck. It was clearly made with expensive materials and fine craftsmanship.

Randy had promised that on the day of our marking ceremony, he'd have the most beautiful moon necklace made for me so the Moon Goddess would always watch over me.

But now, the gift that should have been mine was with Annie.

She chuckled and crashed her skis into mine. The world spun around me as we both tumbled into a snow ditch.

The ice and snow sliced open my forearm, and I felt a dull ache in my bones. But the pain in my chest was worse. I felt like my breath was blocked.

Randy rushed toward me, a rare hint of panic on his face. He crouched down, checked my bleeding arm, and helped me up.

My eyes reddened as I struggled to stay alert. "Annie deliberately bumped into me."

Randy's expression darkened, and he grabbed my shoulders. "Nora, this is not the time to act out."

He checked on Annie, who was crying nearby. Once he saw she wasn't badly hurt, he turned to me. "Annie wouldn't do something like that."

"Randy, you have to hear me out. This isn't an accident. She deliberately bumped into me."

Annie began to cry, acting as if she'd been terribly wronged. "Nora, are you upset because I'm wearing this necklace? Alpha Randy gave it to me as a reward for training hard. If you don't like it, I'll take it off."

She tried to unclasp it.

"Just leave it on." Randy stopped her, his voice casual. "Nora acted impulsively this time. Don't take it to heart."

He carefully examined Annie's wounds. When he noticed her ankle was hurt, he picked her up. "Let's get your wounds treated."

Randy left without looking at me again.

My hopes gradually faded as they walked away.

Annie shed a few tears, and he believed her. Even though I'd been hurt too and tried to defend myself, he still wouldn't believe me.

The flower field in the south bloomed every year without fail, and I still occasionally heard news about Winterveil from passing merchants.Sometimes, Randy's subordinates brought me rare, expensive flowers with an attached letter. It read, "Nora, I'll wait for you at the Moon Goddess' altar on the full moon every year."After reading it, I tore the letter to pieces and let the wind carry them away.It was all in the past.I bent down and went back to sorting the herbs.Randy and I both knew I would never return. The snow of Winterveil was forever behind me. I'd once loved with all my heart there, but in the end, all that remained was heartbreak. There were no flowers for me in Winterveil, but I found my own in the south. And I found myself too.

Randy kept trying to win me back, ignoring his subordinates' advice, but I didn't even glance at the expensive gifts he sent me, and when he asked me to spend the next full moon with him, I didn't show up.Some chances only came once. Once they were gone, there was no making up for them.Randy sat alone under the full moon all night. Early the next morning, he quietly left town, regret heavy in his heart. After returning to Winterveil, he publicly tried Annie for all her crimes. He stripped her of her eligibility to join the healing center, took back all the privileges and supplies he'd given her, and banished her from Winterveil for good. Most of the pack took their cues from the Alpha. Everyone had once admired Annie, but after Randy banished her, they all looked down on her.Annie broke down and begged Randy not to be so cruel, but he didn't budge."I'll spend the rest of my life making up for what I did to Nora. You should pay for your mistakes too."Vivian watched it all wi

I sat in the yard under the warm afternoon sun, arranging the flowers I'd picked in a vase and breathing in the sweet air when I suddenly heard the door open.I looked up and froze for a moment.Randy was standing in the doorway. He'd lost a lot of weight, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. Dust coated his leather coat.A few of his men stood quietly a short distance away.I looked at him calmly, without resentment, longing, or much surprise, as if he were a stranger I'd known a long time ago.My reaction seemed to sting him. He walked toward me."Nora." His voice was hoarse. His eyes were locked onto my face. "I know what Annie did to you and everything that happened at the assessment grounds. It was all my fault. I trusted the wrong person, and I had no idea what you'd been going through. I'm sorry."Regret was written all over his face. "Please come back with me. I've banished the Betas who bullied you, and I'll punish Annie too. From now on, I won't let anyone hurt you agai

In the days that followed, I helped the townspeople treat their wounds and sometimes sat quietly beside the flower fields, growing to love this free and fulfilling lifestyle.Every now and then, passing merchants would bring news from the Winterveil pack. I heard rumors that Randy had sent out many werewolves to search for me.But I just listened, without feeling much of anything. That day, I received a letter from Vivian. Randy had found out she'd helped me escape from the pack, but she was still safe. Though he was angry, Vivian's abilities were undeniable. She kept questioning him until he finally gave in and stopped asking."Don't worry. I'm doing fine. You'll have to take good care of yourself."I finally relaxed.Randy had grown increasingly irritable. While he frantically searched for me, Annie gathered her courage and cautiously hugged him from behind, confessing her love. "Alpha Randy, she's already left you. Why won't you consider me? I truly love you."Her words stok

Meanwhile, in the Winterveil pack, Randy's face grew darker with each report from his subordinates. They'd searched the entire territory, from the caves and snowy woods to the hidden shelters where werewolves could escape the wind, but they still couldn't find me."Alpha Randy, we still can't find Nora. She's only an Omega. She might not survive if she tries to cross the mountains alone," one of his subordinates reported, head bowed."Impossible." Randy looked up, his voice firm. "She's just throwing a tantrum and hiding somewhere. She'll come back once she's calmed down. I told her I'd prepare for the marking ceremony once I was done dealing with Annie's situation. She wouldn't want to leave me."He believed I was just jealous of Annie and that I was trying to gain his attention by leaving.Randy got angry, thinking I was trying to manipulate him, but deep down, something didn't feel right."Alpha Randy, don't worry. Nora just isn't thinking straight right now." Annie gently pla

I walked away without looking back. My bag was light, as I had left all my old things behind, including the bracelet and the sketchbook. The ashes of the bouquet I'd thrown into the fire still remained in the cabin, burned to nothing along with the last bit of hope I had left in Randy. The mind-link still connected us, so I could sense his emotions even across the vast greenlands. I could feel his anger and his wounded pride. He probably thought I was throwing another tantrum, jealous of Annie and trying to make him give in by running away.He had no idea I wasn't planning on coming back this time. The road south was full of dangers, and my vision blurred the moment the wind picked up. I searched for shelter from the unforgiving weather, eating my dry food whenever I got hungry. The cold wind kept stabbing at my old wounds. As my body trembled uncontrollably in the freezing snow, memories of my time in the pack flooded my mind.I thought about the humiliation I'd suffered at the
