What the River Left Behind

Current didn't fight me.

It carried me — like water itself recognized something in my blood and decided, after three hundred years waiting, to finally do its part.

I broke the surface quarter mile downriver, gasping for air that tasted like victory and terror at the same time. Paws found purchase on gravel bank slick with moonlight.

Beside me, Rhaevan hauled himself out in human form, soaked through, dark hair plastered forehead, breathing hard in a way that told me the river cost him more effort than he wanted to admit.

Behind us, faint and furious, still shouting on the far bank.

But it's already fading.

Ashveil trackers are not fool enough to follow Alpha's order into open water at night against current that strong, and Valeric, for all authority, couldn't order the river to slow for him.

We'd made it.

I felt shift reverse without willing it, body folding back into two legs, human and shaking and abruptly, horribly aware I was naked, freezing, and alone in dark with man I'd known less than two hours.

Rhaevan turned his back the instant it happened, already shrugging out the soaked overcoat and holding it out behind him without looking.

"Small mercy of shifter biology," he said, voice carefully even. "Most of us develop excellent manners out of necessity."

I took a coat.

Hands wouldn't stop trembling — cold, adrenaline, aftershock of tearing body into something new and back again in an hour.

"Thank you," I managed, and meant more than a coat.

"Don't thank me yet."

He kept back to me until I'd pulled the coat closed, then turned, expression unreadable in dark.

"We're out of Ashveil territory, but we're not safe. Not truly. Not until much further north."

"North."

I wrapped my arms around myself.

"You said the name was Noctis. Rhaevan Noctis. That's — I've heard that name."

"You would have. Northern Alpha, Noctis Pack, uncomfortably far from anywhere your former pack cared to send emissaries."

Ghost of something bitter crossed his face.

"Ashveil doesn't think much of the North. Calls us backward. Isolationist. It suited me to let them keep believing that."

"Why?"

"Because it meant no one asked too many questions about what I was actually doing up there."

He crouched by the riverbank, retrieving a small waterproof pack he must have stashed or carried the entire way.

Planning, I realized, that went back further than tonight.

"Or who I was looking for."

"Me," I said quietly.

"You."

He didn't look away this time.

"Though admit, I expected to find you years ago. Your mother made that considerably harder than it should have been."

My chest tightened.

"You know something about my mother."

"I know she vanished nine years ago rather than let the Veiled Court find you first."

He said it plainly, without softening, and somehow honesty hurt worse than gentleness would have.

"I know she spent years before that building seal strong enough to hide what you are from anyone who might come looking — including, apparently, own daughter. I don't know where she is now. I've been searching almost as long as I've been searching for you."

Words landed like stones in still water, rippling outward into questions I didn't have strength to ask yet.

Vanished rather than let them find me.

Built a seal herself.

Nine years.

I'd spent nine years hating her for leaving. For choosing whatever she'd chosen over own daughter.

"She sealed me," I said slowly, testing the shape of it. "To protect me."

"That's my belief, yes."

Something almost gentle entered his voice.

"I don't think your mother abandoned you, Lunara. I think she went to war for you, quietly, alone, and never told you because telling you would have made you a target before you were strong enough to survive being one."

I wanted to believe him.

That was, I realized with a cold twist of unease, exactly the problem.

I wanted it too badly, and I'd learned tonight, in the worst possible way, what happened to a heart too eager to trust.

"Why should I believe any of this?" I asked. "I don't know you. I don't know what you want from me."

Rhaevan considered the question with seriousness that, whatever else he was lying about, felt real.

"Fair. Ask me again in a month, once you've seen what I actually do instead of just what I say."

He rose, offering hand a second time that night.

"For now, all I'll ask is that you survive long enough to decide whether I've earned your trust. Because people hunting the Noctyrian bloodline won't wait for you to make up their mind."

Before I could respond, silver text flared back to life behind my eyes, sharper this time, edged with something that felt almost like an alarm.

[Blood Moon System]

[New Threat Detected: Unknown Origin]

[Warning: You are being observed.]

I went very still.

"Rhaevan."

"What does it say?"

"It says someone is watching us right now."

His hand closed around mine, fast and sure, and I felt every ounce of warmth vanish from his expression as gaze swept the tree line across the river — Ashveil side, where no torches burned anymore, where nothing should have been except silence and cold moonlight.

Something moved between trees.

Not a wolf.

Not a tracker in uniform.

Tall, still shapes that made no sound at all, watching us with patience that felt older than forest itself.

Then, deliberately, unmistakably, it inclined its head to me.

Greetings.

Or warning.

Then it was gone, vanished into dark as though never been there at all.

The only proof I hadn't imagined it was the look on Rhaevan's face — a man who had clearly, for the first time all night, been caught completely by surprise.

"That," he said quietly, "was not one of Vaelric's men."

  • Rejected by My Fated Mate    Nine Years of Silence

The northern gate stood open when we reached it, torchlight spilling across a courtyard packed with wary Noctis wolves, all of them keeping a careful, respectful distance from the woman standing alone at its center. She was smaller than I remembered. That was the first thing that struck me, absurd as it felt in the moment—nine years had shrunk the towering figure of my childhood memory down into someone almost fragile, silver threading through hair that had once been the same dark brown as mine, lines carved deep around eyes that found me instantly across the crowded courtyard and went wide with something I couldn't name."Lunara." My name in her voice sounded exactly the way I remembered it, and nothing like I remembered it, both at once.I didn't move. Couldn't. Nine years of grief and fury and unanswered questions rose up all together, choking anything I might have said."You're supposed to be dead," I finally managed. "Or gone. Or—I don't know what I thought. I stopped letting

  • Rejected by My Fated Mate    What Wake Up

I woke to the firelight and the low murmur of voices trying and failing to stay quiet."—can't just decide that for her, Rhaevan. She's not a weapon you found in a vault. She's a person who's had exactly one day to learn she's not who she thought she was.""I'm not treating her like a weapon. I'm treating her like what she is—someone who just performed a task that killed the last three people who attempted it, with no training, no warning, and no idea what she'd actually done. That should frighten you as much as it frightens me.""It does frighten me." Nyra's voice had lost its earlier hostility, worn down into something rawer. "That's exactly why we don't get to make decisions about her future without asking what she wants first. We're not doing to her what was done to us."I opened my eyes to a low stone ceiling, wrapped in furs beside a banked fire, my body aching in ways that told me the fight hadn't been a dream. Both Noctis siblings went silent the instant they noticed I was

  • Rejected by My Fated Mate    Untested

The first wolf jumped in front of Rhaevan just as he was turning.I saw him take the blow meant for me, roll through it, and use the attacker’s own momentum against them — smashing their skull into a rock hard enough to crack stone. There was no time to be afraid of him.A second shadow broke away from the chaos and locked its gaze on me.Instinct took over before I could think. This body—only a few hours old in this form—dropped and twisted, claws slashing at empty space where my throat had been just moments before. I hadn’t learnt that move. My blood remembered it for me.[Warning: Combat instincts activating — Bloodline-inherited, not trained][Advice: Don’t rely on instinct alone. Instinct without skill fails.]The system blinked too late. The wolf recovered quickly, spun around, and launched a second attack. No surprises left to save me now.Nyra exploded into the wolf’s side—fully shifted now, bigger than I expected, a blur of dark fur and fury that slammed the attacker down

  • Rejected by My Fated Mate    Blood Before Loyalty

"Your sister?" I barely whispered, but Rhaevan was already moving across the map toward the waypoint entrance, his body shifting into a form I hadn’t seen before—neither the violent shape he’d taken against Kael nor the solid one he’d shown me. This was tighter. Older. The kind of tension you only get with family. He didn’t turn, only said, "Stay out of the light.""Whatever happens, I can handle her.""You didn’t say that about Kael."“I can guess,” Kael said. The clearing, the torches—he squared his shoulders. Your imprint includes data up to October 2023. This means "Never has acted, not once, as expected, Nyra. "Young is loose, which is almost a compliment, in the case of this pale-eyed office boy hovering on the other side of the ward line, maybe twenty, maybe twenty-four. Two armed Noctis wolves flanked her, one on each side, torchlight sharp against a face bent with rage. "Not one message," she added nine years later. And here I find you, hiding out in some backward b

  • Rejected by My Fated Mate    The Weight of a Name

"They're not giving up," I said, listening to the second howl rise and fade behind us."Vaelric doesn't strike me as a man who surrenders anything he's decided belongs to him." Rhaevan was already moving, hauling me off the main path into denser trees, his earlier calm replaced by something sharper now that Kael's visit had changed the math of the night. "Whether he still wants to claim you is separate from whether he'll let you walk free carrying knowledge of his rejection ceremony — witnessed by the Veiled Court. That's a political liability now. Liabilities don't get abandoned."The bitterness cut deeper than I expected. "So I'm still just a problem to be managed."Rhaevan stopped. Turned. His grey eyes held mine, unflinching. "To him, perhaps. Not to me." He said it plainly, without softening it — a fact, not comfort, which landed harder than comfort would have. "I didn't pull you out of that hall because you're a problem, Lunara. I pulled you out because I've spent nine years hop

  • Rejected by My Fated Mate    The Veiled Court's Envoy

"Then who was it?"The voice came out sharper than I meant, fear curdling fast into anger.Rhaevan didn't answer immediately. He was still staring at the empty tree line, every line of body coiled tight. When he finally spoke, a voice had dropped into the register I hadn't heard yet — the quiet, controlled, voice of a man doing rapid, unpleasant math."Need you to listen very carefully," he said. "Whatever you do, don't run. Not from this. Running from Ashveil trackers was survival. Running from that would be an invitation.""Invitation to what?""To be chased. They don't hunt what stands still and looks unafraid. They hunt what flees."He finally turned to face me, urgency in expression made the pulse spike all over again."Lunara, need to know exactly what the system told you. Word for word."I repeated it.New Threat Detected: Unknown Origin. You are being observed.Something tightened at the corner of his jaw."Unknown origin. Not Ashveil. Not Noctis."He said it confirmed fear ra
