Chapter 6 :The Clause Only She Should Have Read

Sloane.

Nobody moved.

Eva held her phone up between us like a small glowing weapon, and the screen showed everything: my hands on Torin's chest, his hands on my face, the two of us tangled together in a tunnel where anyone could have walked through.

The photo was clear. It was sharp, well framed, and almost professional. I would have been impressed if it had not been the end of my career.

Eva did not look heartbroken. She looked satisfied. That bloody bitch.

Torin stepped in front of me before I could draw breath, his shoulders blocking the light from her screen. "Delete it, Eva."

"Don't use that tone with me." Her voice stayed perfectly pleasant, which made it worse. "I have spent two years building a clean image around you and this team. Sponsors, the league office, the family-man story the press loves. I am not about to watch it burn because you cannot keep your hands to yourself."

"This is not her fault."

"I did not say it was her fault." Eva tilted her head, and her eyes moved past his shoulder to find mine. "I said it was going to cost her."

I stepped out from behind Torin. My legs felt unsteady, but I made them carry me. "You don't get to threaten my job."

"Oh, Sloane." She said my name like she was tasting it. "I read your contract."

My stomach dropped.

"Section nine, personal entanglement with subjects of the production. The morality clause." She smiled. "The league liaison office can pull your credentials before lunch if I send this. Your network would have no choice but to let you go. They would be grateful for the excuse, honestly. Nobody wants a scandal attached to a championship run."

I went cold from the inside out. That clause had been added in a late revision, and Reyna had walked me through the exact wording over the phone, behind closed doors, because it was the kind of language no one wanted floating around. Only Reyna and the network's legal team should have known what it said.

Eva had gone looking through my file. She had known where to dig before she ever shook my hand.

Torin moved closer to her, and his voice dropped into something low and heavy that made the air in the tunnel feel thicker. The Alpha in him was slipping out, and I saw Eva's pulse jump at her throat even as she held her smile. "We will talk about this privately. Tonight. You will not send that photo anywhere."

"Or what?" she said softly.

He did not answer. He had no answer, and we both knew it.

Eva slid her phone into her bag without deleting a thing. "I am feeling generous," she said. "You have until tonight to fix your little problem, Torin. If you are not distant from her by then, the photo goes to the liaison office with a very concerned note attached."

She turned, and her heels struck the concrete in a steady rhythm that echoed down the tunnel long after she disappeared. She left behind the scent of her perfume and a threat that hung in the cold air like smoke.

Torin turned to me, and his hand closed gently around my wrist. "Sloane—"

I pulled free so fast it burned. "Stay away from me."

"Let me fix this."

"You already rejected me." My voice cracked, and I hated it. "Don't cause me trouble now."

Something broke open in his face, but I did not stay to see what came after it. I grabbed my camera bag and walked away, and I did not let myself look back.

I did not go to my apartment. Someone knew where I slept, and the thought of those four thin walls made my skin crawl. Instead I found the media room at the end of the east corridor and locked the door behind me, then stood in the dark for a long moment with my forehead pressed against the cool wood.

When I could breathe again, I sat down at the editing desk and plugged in my memory card.

The unlabeled folder was still there. I opened the bar photo again and made myself look at it the way I would look at any frame I was trying to rescue: slowly, edge to edge, with nothing in my head but light and shadow. Me at the bar, laughing. The angle is too perfect. The timing was too early.

I zoomed in on the mirror behind the bartender.

Most of it dissolved into blur and glare, a smear of bottles and amber lamps. But behind my table, half swallowed by shadow, stood a man in a dark jacket. His face was turned away from the glass. I could not see his features. But his arm was raised, steadying something near his chest, and on his wrist sat a watch with a dark face and a thick silver rim.

I knew that watch.

I had seen it that very morning, catching the light under the locker room fluorescents while Bastian wrapped tape around Torin's stick. I had photographed his hands without thinking about it, the way I photographed everything.

My heart began to pound.

It could have been a coincidence. Half the men in this city probably owned something like it. I told myself that twice, then a third time. It did not help. I took a screenshot of the watch and saved it in three places.

Then I sat there in the locked room, with two photos open side by side. One of me was taken in secret in a bar. One of me was taken openly in a tunnel by a woman who had been waiting for me to fall.

Two different people, or one.

Someone in Frostbridge had been tracking me since the day I arrived, and I had just kissed the one man in the city who could make that dangerous.

Emrys povI drove like a madman.Voss had given me the address with a split lip and a very sudden desire to cooperate. An apartment complex downtown. I kept thinking about that the whole way there. Why an apartment complex?Kidnappers used warehouses. Empty farmhouses. Places with no neighbors and no cameras. Not a building with a doorman and a parking garage. It did not make sense. That scared me more than anything.I took the corners too fast. I ran one red light, then another. When the building finally came into view, I pulled up to the curb and jumped out before the engine had even stopped rolling.I took the stairs two at a time.My mind would not stop. Was she hurt? Was she cold? Was she alone in some dark room, waiting for someone to come?Had they touched her?If they had, I already knew what I would do. I had even started planning where to put the bodies. The river was close. The woods past the highway were closer.I reached the fourth floor and followed her scent down the ha

Emrys povEva Calloway scowled at me like I was something she had found on her shoe."Emrys Kade." She said my name slowly, tasting every letter. "Instead of teasing me, shouldn't you be more worried about your game?"I kept my smile but I felt like ripping her apart."It is one of the biggest of the season, isn't it?" She lifted her glass and sipped, watching me over the rim. "And from what I hear, you are nowhere near beating Torin yet."She had aimed for the soft spot, and she had hit it clean. My jaw shifted before I could stop it. The room had gone quiet around us, the way rooms do when wolves sense a fight coming, and I felt a dozen pairs of eyes waiting to see what the Marauders' captain would do.I never got to answer."Torin ran after some chick, right?" One of my own players drifted over from the bar, grinning, loose with drink. Voss's friend, Dane, with the jersey patch pinned to his lapel like a joke. "Which means it is a free game for us.""Shut up," I said."Sorry, Capta

Eva.I paced the length of my living room six times before I realized I was biting my fingers. The polish on my index nail had chipped clean off. I looked at it, furious, then started on the next one. Behind me the city glittered through the glass wall, and I had never hated a view so much in my life."I knew it," I said. "I knew the day that girl walked into that rink everything would become an issue.""Calm down, Eva."Camille sat curled on my white sofa with a glass of wine, watching me wear a path into the carpet. She had been my friend since before the league, since before Torin, and she was the only person in the world I let see me like this."How am I supposed to calm down?" I spun around. "He has dragged his feet on the wedding for a year. A year, Camille. Every time I bring up a date, it is the season, or the cup, or the sponsors. And then she shows up, and what does he do? He goes back to his pack. Because she went missing.""He was worried about a photographer on his team's

Torin povThe pack house had not changed.Same stone steps, same iron lanterns, same smell of old wood and wax polish that I had spent eight years trying to scrub out of my memory. I had sworn I would never walk through those doors again. I walked through them without slowing down. The Alpha in me came in first.I did not call it. I did not need to. It rolled out of my chest and filled the hall, and I felt the air change. Conversations died mid-word. A boy carrying a tray of glasses froze, then dropped to one knee so fast the glasses rang against each other. Two enforcers at the foot of the stairs lowered their heads, and not one of them dared to look up.Eight years away, and they still bowed."Alpha!"Maria came hurrying out of the east corridor, wiping her hands on her apron, and her whole face lit up the moment she saw me. She had worked in this house since before I was born. She had slipped me sweets when my father was not looking. She had cried at my window the night I left. She

Sloane. He came back in under ten minutes, which I would have found funny if my wrists had not been on fire. The door banged open at the top of the stairs, boots hit the steps two at a time, and the masked man appeared in the circle of yellow light holding a plastic bowl in one hand and a steaming kettle in the other. A tower of instant noodle packets was tucked under his arm, and a fork stuck out of his jacket pocket like he had forgotten it was there."I did not know what you liked," he said, slightly out of breath. "So I got chicken."I stared at him. "You went out and bought noodles.""I went to the kitchen upstairs. Nobody goes out in this weather." He set the bowl on an overturned crate, tore open the packet, and poured the water in with surprising care. The smell reached me a second later, salty and warm, and my stomach clenched so hard I felt dizzy. He stood there stirring with the fork, frowning at the bowl like it might fail him. Then his gaze dropped to my wrists, to the re

Torin."Fuck."The word tore out of me as I stood in the snow with Sloane's phone crushed in my fist. How had I lost her? She had been ten feet away. I had heard her scream my name and I had still not reached her in time.My breath came hard and ragged, and I forced it down, because panic would not help her. If the team found out, it would be a disaster. A photographer under league protection, taken from inside the compound in the middle of the championship run. But I could not make myself settle long enough to think about who it could be either. Every name I tried slid out of my hands.Behind me, the guards were finally running, flashlights bobbing, voices crossing. The lights flickered back on all at once, and the courtyard looked small and ordinary under them, as if nothing had happened. I turned away from them. I could not explain this to anyone yet.I went back inside and changed fast, sweatpants traded for jeans, bare feet shoved into boots without socks, a coat dragged off the
