Ciara's POV

Lydia stood a few feet away, arms crossed over her chest, a smirk playing at her lips. My longtime rival—the girl who had shadowed my every step during training, who had competed with me for every scrap of recognition, who had made it her personal mission to undermine me at every opportunity.

Behind her stood her usual collection of followers, lesser she-wolves who fed off Lydia's cruelty like scavengers picking at bones.

"I had always known you were shameless, Ciara," Lydia continu

Draven's POVThe doors opened, and the whole pack was in the hall.I had never seen it like that. The tables had been cleared out and the chairs set in rows from the doors to the dais, and the aisles between them were packed with wolves standing shoulder to shoulder, because there had not been enough chairs for everyone who had come. Every wolf in the house. Every levy from the outer farms. The villages of the eastern road. The old men who could barely walk had been carried up the hill and set in the front row. The children had been brought.Nobody spoke. We walked the long aisle together, Ciara's hand in mine, and the silence was not the cold silence of a room waiting to see whether a man would fail. It was the other kind. The silence of a pack that had buried twenty-two wolves a week ago and was watching the last of the house walk in.I saw Harren in the front row. I saw Cassel beside him, and Cassel was not looking away. I saw Marcus with Liora on his left, and Liora had her hand o

Ciara’s POVThe dress was laid out on the bed when I came out of the bath.I stopped in the doorway with the towel still in my hands and looked at it, and for a long moment I could not move.It was white. Not the white of my wedding dress—that had been silk and lace and silver thread, a dress meant for one day and one man. This one was heavier, older in its bones, cut in the severe lines of the old ceremony. Wool and velvet, the white of fresh snow, with the silver of the pack along every seam. And there, folded on top of it, the mantle—white edged in silver, with the wolf of the house worked into the shoulder in thread so fine it looked like frost on a window.I sat down on the edge of the bed in my towel and put my hand flat on the fabric.*A week ago I was burying twenty-two wolves,* I thought. *A week before that I was sitting on a stone bench in a garden listening to a man tell me the pack needed him.**And now they are going to put a mantle on me.*I had spent my whole life bein

  • Rejected by the Alpha Heir, Mated to His Rival Brother   CHAPTER 207

Draven’s POVThe sun came up over the eastern hills and I watched it from the balcony with my hands on the rail, and I did not feel like a man who was about to be crowned.I felt like a man walking up a hill he could not see the top of.The few days since the council room had gone by the way a fever goes by — in a blur with sharp pieces in it. I had not slept more than four hours in any of them. I had sat in that chair from first light until the candles were stubs, and I had gone through the treasury book, the muster rolls, the grain stores, the border reports, the correspondence that my father had let pile up for a month because he had never once in his life enjoyed paperwork. I had learned things about this house in five days that I had not learned in thirty-two years in it. Some of them were things I could use. Some of them were things that made me want to put my head in my hands. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, the pack had decided about me.Not in a hall, not in a vote.

Isolde’s POVThorne stood in the corridor with his hands folded and his face as calm as a lake at dawn, and I hated him for it.Three days I had waited on that calm. Three days of him watching me across the war table, saying nothing, and me not knowing whether I had a partner or a problem."Should I come in?" he asked."You knocked," I said. "You may as well."I stepped back and he walked past me into the room, close enough that I caught the smell of him — ink and old wine and something clean underneath — and I closed the door and put my back to it and watched him.He did not sit. He walked the length of the room and stopped at the window and looked out at the mountains, and then he turned and crossed to the writing table and glanced down at the paper I had left lying on it.I moved before he could read it. I stepped between him and the table and slid the paper under my hand."Something to hide?" he said."Something that isn't yours." I held his eyes. "Yet."He smiled at that. It was

Isolde’s POVA few days laterThe silk sheets stuck to my knees. Marius was beneath me, red-faced, his hands clumsy on my hips, his breath coming in short wet gasps that I had learned to time and count and ignore.I rolled my hips and he groaned."That's it," he said. "That's it, that's it—"He finished with a sound like a man being sick. His body went slack under mine. His hands fell away from my hips and hit the mattress. His head lolled to the side, eyes half-closed, a thin line of sweat running down into his collar.I stayed where I was a moment longer, both hands braced on his chest. My right hand had drifted up to the base of his throat without my telling it to. I could feel the pulse there. Thick and slow and stupid. It would take almost nothing. The right thumb, the right amount of pressure, and there would be one less fat old man in the world and a great deal more room for someone clever.I counted to ten. Then I took my hand away and climbed off him."Gods," Marius said, to

  • Rejected by the Alpha Heir, Mated to His Rival Brother   CHAPTER 204

Draven’s POVI had never once felt it before. That was the thing I could not get my mind around. Thirty-two years in this house. I had felt my father's command a hundred times — the weight of it, the way it came down on your shoulders and folded your knees before you had decided anything at all. I had watched men twice his size bow to him with their faces white. I had felt it myself, and hated it, and hated him for it.And I had never once felt the thing in myself. Not a flicker. Not a whisper. I had trained in secret with old soldiers who pitied me, and I had listened for it, and it had never come. When I was young, I had decided that it was simply one more thing I had not been given — one more door that did not open for me. A bastard son does not carry the Alpha's voice. That is the whole point of the word bastard. That is what the word means. And now forty wolves were on their knees in front of me because I had breathed.I looked down the room and made myself take it in, because I
