Chapter Six

Sylvia’s POV

Be My Plus One

The mahogany doors of Whitmore & Associates stared back at me like they always had, polished, imposing, utterly indifferent to the chaos swirling in my chest. I'd stood in this exact spot a hundred times before, maybe more. Back when visits meant something simple. Back when Adrian's office was just the place I'd barge into with takeout containers and complaints about my mother, and he'd close his laptop without a second thought, already reaching for the spring rolls.

That was years ago.

Now the brass nameplate gleamed under the hallway lights, and my reflection in the glass partition looked like a stranger wearing my clothes. Same dark blazer. Same anxious habit of twisting my grandmother's ring around my finger. Different everything else.

I pressed my palm flat against the wood. Just for a second. The grain was cool, familiar in a way that made my throat tighten. God, I was being ridiculous. This was just a building. Just an office. Just a man I hadn't spoken to since I'd walked out of his life with nothing but a voicemail and a half hearted apology that I'd rehearsed for weeks and still managed to botch completely.

I pushed the door open.

The reception area hadn't changed. Same minimalist aesthetic that screamed wealthy but tasteful, all cream walls and abstract art that probably cost more than my entire wardrobe. The receptionist, a sharp-eyed woman in her fifties with silver-streaked hair and reading glasses perched on her nose looked up from her computer with the practiced smile of someone who'd spent decades perfecting the art of polite disinterest.

"Good afternoon. May I help you?"

I opened my mouth. Closed it. Tried again. "I'm here to see Adrian."

Her smile didn't waver, but something in her eyes shifted, a flicker of professional assessment, maybe. "Do you have an appointment, miss?"

"I don't," I admitted, already feeling the heat creeping up my neck. "But could you please let him know that Sylvia's here? He'll—" I stopped myself. Would he? Would he see me? "Just tell him I'm here. Please."

The receptionist studied me for a moment longer. Then something softened in her expression, almost imperceptibly. She picked up the phone, pressed a button, and spoke in a low murmur that I couldn't quite catch. A pause. Another murmur. Then she hung up and gave me a small nod.

"Go on in. He's free."

My heart was doing something ridiculous in my chest, a frantic staccato that had nothing to do with the brisk walk down the corridor and everything to do with the door at the end. The one with the nameplate that read Adrian Whitmore, Managing Partner in elegant gold lettering.

I didn't knock. If I knocked, I'd lose my nerve. If I knocked, I'd have to stand there waiting, and waiting meant thinking, and thinking meant remembering every single reason why this was a terrible, catastrophic, soul-crushing idea.

So I just turned the handle and walked in.

He was at his desk, of course. He was always at his desk, even back when I'd tease him about being married to his work. Same broad shoulders beneath a perfectly tailored suit jacket. Same dark hair, though it was shorter now, neater. He looked up from whatever document he'd been reviewing, and for a split second, just a fraction of a heartbeat, I saw it. Recognition. Surprise. Something else that flickered too fast to name before he shut it down completely.

"Sylvia." His voice was measured, carefully neutral. "I didn't expect to see you here."

I forced my feet forward until I was standing in front of his desk, close enough to see the faint lines at the corners of his eyes that hadn't been there before. Close enough to catch the familiar scent of his cologne, something woodsy and warm that made my stomach flip in ways I'd spent years trying to forget.

"I know you didn't." The words came out steadier than I felt. "Look, I'm very sorry that I'm barging into your space right now, but—" I took a breath. One breath. That was all the courage I had. "you have to marry me."

Adrian's pen clattered onto the desk. He stared at me with an expression I'd never seen on his face before, equal parts bewilderment and utter disbelief. His eyebrows had shot up so high they were practically merging with his hairline.

"I'm sorry, what now?"

I squared my shoulders. No backing down. That was the old Sylvia, the one who'd run away from every hard conversation. Not anymore. "Marry me."

He leaned back in his chair, studying me like I'd just proposed a hostile corporate takeover. "You know, most times, it's the man doing the requesting. The rich man, actually." A pause. His eyes narrowed, but there was the ghost of something, amusement? lurking beneath the confusion. "Is there something about your gender that I'm not aware of?"

"You think I'm gay?" The question came out more indignant than I'd intended.

"You're asking me to marry you!" He gestured at me, at the space between us, at the sheer absurdity of the entire situation.

"Okay, fine." I held up my hands in surrender. "Maybe it came out way harsher than I intended. Let me rephrase." I took a breath, gathered my scattered thoughts, and tried again. "I need a boyfriend. For a wedding."

Adrian blinked. Once. Twice.

"Are you nuts?"

"Probably," I admitted. "But that's not the point. I have a wedding to attend, my ex’s, he’s getting married to Pretzel, which is a whole separate nightmare and I need a boyfriend. A plus one. That's it." I was rambling now, I knew it, but I couldn't stop. "There's no big deal, Adrian. Please. It's just once. Just a stage play. The moment the wedding ends, all of this is over. Okay?"

He was quiet for a long moment. His fingers drummed against the mahogany surface, a nervous habit I remembered from late nights when he'd been working on a particularly brutal case. The sound was so achingly familiar that I had to look away, focus on the bookshelf behind him, anything to keep my composure intact.

"When," he said slowly, carefully, "is this drama of a wedding happening?"

Chapter Forty-FiveSylvia’s POV I woke up before the sun.It wasn't intentional. My body just decided, somewhere around four in the morning, that sleep was over. I lay there for a while, staring at the ceiling, listening to the house breathe around me. The creaks. The wind. The distant sound of something settling in the walls. Then I got up.The hallway was dark. I crept past Adrian's door, closed, quiet and made my way to Bella's room. I knocked twice, softly.Nothing.I knocked again.A groan. Then the door cracked open, and Bella's face appeared, squinting at me like I'd personally offended her."What time is it?""Early.""How early?""Very."She stared at me for a long moment. Then she sighed and opened the door the rest of the way."Come in before someone sees you.”Her room was a disaster. Clothes everywhere. Books stacked on the nightstand. A half-eaten granola bar on the windowsill."You live like this?" I asked."I live like someone who doesn't care.""Clearly."She sat dow

  • Rented Husband    A Night To Adrian’s Birthday

Chapter Forty-FourSylvia’s POV A Night To Adrian’s Birthday The house was starting to feel like ours.I noticed it the morning after karaoke night, the way the sunlight hit the kitchen, the way the floors creaked in the same places every time, the way the whole place smelled like coffee and woodsmoke and something I couldn't name. Home, maybe. That was the word I kept circling and not quite landing on.Bella was the first one up, which was unusual. She was standing at the stove when I walked in, flipping something in a pan and humming under her breath."You're cooking," I said."I'm attempting.""What is it?""Eggs. I think."I peered over her shoulder. They were eggs. Barely. "They look...""Rustic," she said, and we both laughed.Adrian came down a few minutes later, still half-asleep, his hair a disaster. He kissed the top of my head without a word and poured himself a cup of coffee. Romano followed shortly after, grumbling about the bed being too soft, then immediately curling

Chapter Forty-ThreeThe evening came with a knock on my door.I was sitting on the bed, reading one of the old books from Adrian's grandmother's collection, when Bella burst in without waiting for an answer."Get dressed," she said. "We're going out."I looked up. "Out? Where?""It's a surprise.""Bella—""Don't argue. Just get dressed. Something cute. Something comfortable. Something you can move in."I raised an eyebrow. "Move in?""You'll see."She disappeared before I could ask any more questions.I found something to wear, jeans, a soft sweater, comfortable shoes. I didn't know what Bella had planned, but I trusted her. I always had. When I walked downstairs, everyone was waiting.Adrian was standing by the door, looking unfairly handsome in a simple button-down and jeans. Romano was beside him, keys in hand. Bella was practically bouncing with excitement."Finally," she said. "Let's go.""Where are we going?" I asked again."You'll see."The drive took twenty minutes. We ended u

  • Rented Husband    Bond

Chapter Forty-TwoThe morning came softly.I woke to sunlight streaming through the curtains, golden and warm, pooling on the wooden floor like honey. The house was quiet, no footsteps, no voices, no clatter of pans. Just silence. Beautiful, peaceful silence. For a moment, I didn't move.I just lay there, watching the dust motes dance in the light, listening to the distant sound of birds outside the window. Somewhere in the house, someone was moving, soft footsteps, the creak of a floorboard but it was gentle. Unhurried. Like the house itself was still waking up.I could get used to this. That was the thought that came, unbidden, as I finally pulled myself out of bed and padded toward the window. The view stretched out before me, rolling fields, a line of trees in the distance, the old rope swing swaying gently in the breeze. It looked like something from a painting. Something from a dream.I didn't want it to end.I didn't want to go back to the city. To the noise. To the danger. I d

  • Rented Husband    Still At Home

Chapter Forty-OneSylvia’s POV Still At HomeThe house had settled into silence.Bella had gone to bed first, claiming exhaustion from the wine and the laughter. Romano had followed shortly after, muttering something about needing to check the security system before he slept. That left me and Adrian on the porch, the night air cool against my skin, the stars scattered across the sky like someone had spilled a jar of diamonds."We should go to bed," I said, though I didn't move."We should." He didn't move either. The silence stretched between us, comfortable and warm. I didn't want to break it. I didn't want the day to end. Because tomorrow would bring reality. Tomorrow would bring plans and decisions and danger. But tonight was still tonight."You know," Adrian said quietly, "I was thinking about something.""What?""There's a room upstairs. At the end of the hall. I haven't been in there since I was a kid.""What's in it?""My grandmother's painting studio. She used to spend hours

  • Rented Husband    A Taste Of Home

Chapter FortySylvia’s POV A Taste Of HomeThe second day was even quieter than the first.I woke to the sound of rain against the window, soft, steady, the kind of rain that made you want to stay in bed forever. The house was warm. The sheets were soft. And for a moment, just a moment, I forgot everything again.I found Adrian in the kitchen. He was standing at the stove, a spatula in his hand, attempting to flip an egg. He was failing. Miserably."That's not how you do it," I said.He turned. "Good morning to you too.""Good morning. You're doing it wrong.""I'm doing it fine.""The egg is broken.""The egg is rustic.""The egg is a disaster."He looked down at the pan. The egg was, indeed, a disaster. Yolk everywhere. Shell fragments. A slight burning smell."Okay," he admitted. "Maybe I'm doing it wrong."I walked over and took the spatula from his hand. "Let me.""You cook?""I manage."I cracked two eggs into the pan, cleanly, perfectly and flipped them with a flick of my wrist
