Chapter 4

Author: Evil SIL
By the time I walked out of the hospital, night had fallen completely.

I pieced the entire string of events together from start to finish.

Dante reported me, Chief Hardy stopped answering my calls, and the Medical Affairs Office put me under investigation.

My patients were stolen, my paper was plagiarized, and pages of my case files were ripped away.

I didn't even want to consider the possibility.

Had Chief Hardy really signed off on all of this?

After a moment's thought, I opened the group chat and typed out a message.

"Everyone, there's something I need to clarify here. Dante took my case files, modified my draft paper, and put his name down as first author without my consent. This is blatant academic misconduct. I've backed up all the evidence and will submit it to the ethics committee if necessary."

The moment I sent it, a direct message from Dante popped up. "Rowan, don't be like this. It's childish. The paper's already been submitted anyway. What's the point of throwing a fit now?"

I ignored him.

Seconds later, Dante dropped a voice note into the group chat.

He sounded frantic and wronged, a stark contrast to his tone in my private messages.

"I honestly have no idea why Dr. Carver is making these accusations against me. Chief Hardy was the one who asked me to help organize that paper. I pulled so many all-nighters just to clean it up. I'm being completely wrongly accused here…

"If you guys don't believe me, I'll call Chief Hardy right now."

The chat erupted instantly.

"Yeah, clear the air right here so no one gets unfairly accused!"

"Don't be scared, Dante. We've got your back!"

Dante initiated a group voice call.

I hesitated for a second before joining.

Dante spoke up, his voice carrying just the right amount of raspiness. "I'm calling Chief Hardy right now. Everyone be my witness."

The line chimed, and then it connected.

My heart clenched tightly.

Didn't she say she was in a closed-door symposium with zero reception?

"Hello?" Chief Hardy's voice echoed through the speaker.

Dante sounded even more aggrieved. "Chief Hardy, I really don't know what to do. Dr. Carver is telling everyone I plagiarized his paper. Could you please clarify things for me?"

After a brief pause, Chief Hardy finally spoke. "Rowan hasn't been in the right headspace lately. I authorized Dante to take over that paper. There was no plagiarism."

My blood froze instantly.

"Rowan, stop making a scene."

The line went dead, and the group chat blew up in a frenzy.

"Blaming others just because you're off your game? What a joke."

"I feel so bad for Dante. Imagine being framed like that as an intern."

"Shouldn't someone be apologizing right now?"

I stared at the messages flooding the screen, my fingers trembling slightly.

Chief Hardy claimed she was off-grid at a symposium. Yet when Dante called, she picked up on the very first ring. She was teaming up with Dante against me.

Why?

I gripped my phone, the question looping endlessly in my mind.

Before I could process it any further, footsteps echoed down the hallway.

I looked up and saw Dante heading my way, flanked by a small crowd.

He tilted his head, a faint sneer playing at the corner of his lips. "Dr. Carver, you're still here?"

I said nothing.

He took a step closer and adopted a righteous stance. "Dr. Carver, what you said in the chat earlier was completely out of line. I helped you organize that paper, and instead of showing a shred of gratitude, you stabbed me in the back."

Someone behind him chimed in, "Right? Talk about being ungrateful."

Dante let out a sigh, his tone dripping with condescension. "Look, Dr. Carver, I know you're under investigation by the Medical Affairs Office and you're in a bad mood, so you're snapping at everyone.

"But you shouldn't take your frustration out on me. I didn't do anything to you. So, I came up with a solution for you."

With that, he extended a document toward me. "Sign this and resign voluntarily."

I frowned and didn't reach for it.

Dante's smile stiffened for a fraction of a second. "Rowan, it's going to look a lot worse for you when you get your license revoked and get fired."

A few chuckles of agreement echoed from behind him.

Just then, the elevator chimed. Everyone turned to look.

The doors slid open, and Chief Hardy stepped out.

The moment Dante spotted her, his face lit up with a smile. "Chief Hardy! You're back!"

Chief Hardy glanced at him, then shifted her gaze onto me. Her expression was a tangled mess of emotions.

Dante rushed forward. "Dr. Carver still insists my paper was plagiarized…"

I looked at Chief Hardy, holding onto a sliver of hope that she would speak up for me, as she knew the kind of person I was.

However, she didn't budge an inch.

The corner of my mouth twitched into a hollow smile. My voice was muffled as I called out, "Mom."

Everyone in the hallway froze.

Before she left, she came by to apologize.Standing before me, she wrung her hands and rambled on.She babbled about how she had lost her mind and how Dante was too manipulative and good at turning people against each other.I kept right on organizing the medication inventory, lining the boxes up neatly. Her voice grew quieter and quieter until she finally let out a heavy sigh and walked away. The incoming junior doctors were green. Their eyes were filled with both excitement and nervousness as they stepped into the department for the first time.On his very first day, one young guy stood awkwardly in the doorway, calling me "Dr. Carver".For a moment, I was remi

Dante's eyes were bloodshot. "You watched me brag and strut around. You must've thought I looked like a complete joke, didn't you?""I do think you're a joke," I finally said. "But not because you're an illegitimate son. It's because you honestly believed being her son meant you were inheriting something. What does she even have for you to inherit? She owns nothing herself."Dante stumbled backward, completely dazed and drained.I stood up and brushed right past him.As I passed him, his voice cracked with bitter indignation. "But she chose me."I paused in my tracks. "Yeah. She chose you."I turned around and looked down at his pathetic, disheveled face. "Have you ever stopped to wonder why she didn't choose me? Because she can never afford what my dad can give me."She's a coward who's terrified of everything, greedy for everything, and ends up keeping nothing. She didn't choose me because my dad is too powerful, and she could never control him."She chose you because you're

Soon, the day Cristina was going to publicly acknowledge her son arrived. She stood at the podium in the academic lecture hall, wearing a crisp white blouse. Pinned to her collar was a golden brooch. It was the very brooch Dad had brought back for her from a business trip to Merriton.Dante stood right behind her.He was wearing a brand-new, high-end suit today, making him look exceptionally polished. His hair was styled meticulously, and a limited-edition luxury watch rested on his wrist. That watch was Dad's, too.His eyes scanned the crowd and zeroed in on me, a provocative smirk spreading across his face. The hospital leadership sat in the front row. The deputy hospital director, Kiera Sanford, flipped through the agenda in front of her with a hint of confusion in her expression. She likely couldn't comprehend why a department chief needed to make such a grand spectacle just to introduce an intern.Once almost everyone had arrived, Cristina cleared her throat and drew th

Dad sounded surprised. "Why are you suddenly asking about that?""Nothing, just checking."With that, I hung up the phone.Dante looked at me, his lips parting slightly."Your dad is Braden Nelson, right?" I asked. His face was drained of all color. "How do you know that?""I don't just know your dad's name. I also happen to know that my dad paid for your dad to finish his postgraduate degree. My mom paid for every school you attended growing up, covering everything from tuition to school fees."Dead silence fell over the department office.Dante's face twisted into an ugly grimace as his voice spiked. "You're lying!""Go ask your dad whose name is on the title deed of the house he lives in or whose account pays for the resort hotels he stays at every winter."Dante's chest heaved violently. His phone slipped from the edge of the desk, landing screen-up on the floor with a new text message popping up across the display. It was from Braden."Dante, Chief Hardy is actually yo

The morning handoff was scheduled for 8:00 am, but I arrived at 7:30 am.Someone was already in the office.Sofia was typing up chart notes at her computer. When she saw me walk in, her hand jerked, sending her mouse clattering to the floor."D-Dr. Carver."I ignored her, walking straight over to my desk.Dante's things were still taking up my spot.I set the cardboard box on the desk and began taking my things back out, piece by piece."Rowan," Dante's voice called out from behind me.I turned around. He stood in the doorway, his tone sharp with confrontation. "Who gave you permission to touch my stuff?""This is my desk," I replied coldly."But—""The computer you're using still has the startup password I set. Have you changed it? No, you haven't, because you can't. I'm the one with the admin rights."The rest of the staff began trickling in. They paused at the door, taking in the scene.Dante's expression flickered for a moment before settling back into a smirk. "Dr. C

Dante's smug smile froze on his face. He was utterly dumbfounded, his eyes darting between me and Chief Hardy. The other junior doctors traded bewildered looks. "What did he just call her?"Chief Hardy's lips parted as if to speak, but in the end, she merely frowned.I knew that look all too well.It was the exact same expression she'd worn my whole life whenever I let her down."Rowan," she finally said, her tone dripping with disappointment. "You are such a massive letdown."My chest tightened."Dante is your subordinate. Where is your grace as his mentor? First you throw a fit in the group chat, and now you're making a scene for the whole hospital to see? What on earth are you trying to do?"My voice sounded raspy, as though I were pushing every word out through a dry throat. "He reported me. He stole my research paper. He brought a mob to corner me in the hallway and force me to resign. And you're asking me what I'm trying to do?"Dante snapped out of his shock and took a
