Chapter 3

Author: Evil SIL
David's words left me uneasy for the rest of the afternoon.

Chief Hardy's phone went straight to voicemail every time I called.

The department group chat, on the other hand, was buzzing non-stop.

Dante posted a voice message. "Attention team. One more announcement. To boost efficiency, I've decided to cancel our weekly complex case review sessions. Just manage your assigned patients. No need to waste time putting slides together anymore."

The chat exploded with excitement.

"Finally! No more pulling all-nighters for slide decks!"

"Dante, you're literally my hero!"

I stared at my phone, rendered completely speechless.

This meant they could do whatever they wanted without a shred of accountability.

They saw it as freedom.

But I knew that, from a strict medical safety standpoint, this was a disaster waiting to happen.

After taking a deep breath, I texted David back. "Find out where Chief Hardy went this afternoon."

I put my phone away and headed toward the office to retrieve my personal belongings.

At the very least, I needed to get my floor rounds logbook back.

The back door to the office wasn't completely shut.

After cleaning, the janitor would sometimes wedge a small stone in the doorframe to roll the cart through.

I pushed the door open and stepped inside, only to realize that my desk was already cleared out.

Now, Dante's things took over the entire surface.

There was a black folder, a tumbler, and a framed photo of him with Chief Hardy.

In the picture, he stood right next to her with a bright smile.

I searched around the office and finally spotted a cardboard box tossed into a corner.

My personal items had been shoved inside in complete disarray.

I crouched down and flipped through my logbook.

Then I froze.

The most crucial pages of patient data had been torn straight out.

"Dr. Carver?" a voice called out from behind me.

I turned around to find Dante standing in the doorway.

"Who gave you permission to come in here?" His voice rose. "Didn't your access card get revoked?"

I held up the logbook. "Did you rip out my core patient data?"

He froze for a moment, then smirked. "Oh, that data? I already incorporated it into my clinical report. You're suspended anyway, so it's not like you need it. Leaving it here would just be a waste."

I snapped, "How dare you use my patient records without my permission?"

"Dr. Carver, that's not quite right."

He sat down on a nearby chair and crossed his legs casually.

"The patients belong to the department, and the clinical data comes from treatment, so it should be shared. You're currently under investigation, which puts the whole department at risk. I'm keeping it safe for the sake of the department."

A bitter laugh escaped my lips. Just as I was about to fire back, my eyes caught his computer screen, and I froze.

The core research paper I was getting ready to publish was sitting open right on his desktop.

My mind went completely blank. "Why do you have my paper?"

Dante said disdainfully, "Given your current situation, you can't publish it anyway. If I submit it under my name, I might even add you as a second author."

"I wrote that entirely on my own!"

"Sure, but you collected the case data here at the hospital," Dante argued.

He raised an eyebrow. "And you used department equipment. By academic standards, this belongs to the whole department."

My fists clenched tight as a realization suddenly washed over me.

A month ago, when Chief Hardy first brought Dante into the department, she introduced him to everyone. "This is Dante Nelson. Make sure to take good care of him."

She never mentioned where he went to school, nor did she speak of his credentials or background.

I hadn't thought much of it back then.

Looking back now, that was the first time I had ever seen Chief Hardy introduce a new hire without saying a single thing about their background.

When the new quarter rolled around, the hospital issued an official notice.Dante was publicly reprimanded for violating medical protocols and committing academic misconduct, and his internship was terminated immediately. The department saw a fresh wave of faces, too.Sofia requested a transfer to another department. Before she left, she came by to apologize.Standing before me, she wrung her hands and rambled on.She babbled about how she had lost her mind and how Dante was too manipulative and good at turning people against each other.I kept right on organizing the medication inventory, lining the boxes up neatly. Her voice grew quieter and quieter until she finally let out a heavy sigh and walked away. The incoming junior doctors were green. Their eyes were filled with both excitement and nervousness as they stepped into the department for the first time.On his very first day, one young guy stood awkwardly in the doorway, calling me "Dr. Carver".For a moment, I was remi

Dante's eyes were bloodshot. "You watched me brag and strut around. You must've thought I looked like a complete joke, didn't you?""I do think you're a joke," I finally said. "But not because you're an illegitimate son. It's because you honestly believed being her son meant you were inheriting something. What does she even have for you to inherit? She owns nothing herself."Dante stumbled backward, completely dazed and drained.I stood up and brushed right past him.As I passed him, his voice cracked with bitter indignation. "But she chose me."I paused in my tracks. "Yeah. She chose you."I turned around and looked down at his pathetic, disheveled face. "Have you ever stopped to wonder why she didn't choose me? Because she can never afford what my dad can give me."She's a coward who's terrified of everything, greedy for everything, and ends up keeping nothing. She didn't choose me because my dad is too powerful, and she could never control him."She chose you because you're

Soon, the day Cristina was going to publicly acknowledge her son arrived. She stood at the podium in the academic lecture hall, wearing a crisp white blouse. Pinned to her collar was a golden brooch. It was the very brooch Dad had brought back for her from a business trip to Merriton.Dante stood right behind her.He was wearing a brand-new, high-end suit today, making him look exceptionally polished. His hair was styled meticulously, and a limited-edition luxury watch rested on his wrist. That watch was Dad's, too.His eyes scanned the crowd and zeroed in on me, a provocative smirk spreading across his face. The hospital leadership sat in the front row. The deputy hospital director, Kiera Sanford, flipped through the agenda in front of her with a hint of confusion in her expression. She likely couldn't comprehend why a department chief needed to make such a grand spectacle just to introduce an intern.Once almost everyone had arrived, Cristina cleared her throat and drew th

Dad sounded surprised. "Why are you suddenly asking about that?""Nothing, just checking."With that, I hung up the phone.Dante looked at me, his lips parting slightly."Your dad is Braden Nelson, right?" I asked. His face was drained of all color. "How do you know that?""I don't just know your dad's name. I also happen to know that my dad paid for your dad to finish his postgraduate degree. My mom paid for every school you attended growing up, covering everything from tuition to school fees."Dead silence fell over the department office.Dante's face twisted into an ugly grimace as his voice spiked. "You're lying!""Go ask your dad whose name is on the title deed of the house he lives in or whose account pays for the resort hotels he stays at every winter."Dante's chest heaved violently. His phone slipped from the edge of the desk, landing screen-up on the floor with a new text message popping up across the display. It was from Braden."Dante, Chief Hardy is actually yo

The morning handoff was scheduled for 8:00 am, but I arrived at 7:30 am.Someone was already in the office.Sofia was typing up chart notes at her computer. When she saw me walk in, her hand jerked, sending her mouse clattering to the floor."D-Dr. Carver."I ignored her, walking straight over to my desk.Dante's things were still taking up my spot.I set the cardboard box on the desk and began taking my things back out, piece by piece."Rowan," Dante's voice called out from behind me.I turned around. He stood in the doorway, his tone sharp with confrontation. "Who gave you permission to touch my stuff?""This is my desk," I replied coldly."But—""The computer you're using still has the startup password I set. Have you changed it? No, you haven't, because you can't. I'm the one with the admin rights."The rest of the staff began trickling in. They paused at the door, taking in the scene.Dante's expression flickered for a moment before settling back into a smirk. "Dr. C

Dante's smug smile froze on his face. He was utterly dumbfounded, his eyes darting between me and Chief Hardy. The other junior doctors traded bewildered looks. "What did he just call her?"Chief Hardy's lips parted as if to speak, but in the end, she merely frowned.I knew that look all too well.It was the exact same expression she'd worn my whole life whenever I let her down."Rowan," she finally said, her tone dripping with disappointment. "You are such a massive letdown."My chest tightened."Dante is your subordinate. Where is your grace as his mentor? First you throw a fit in the group chat, and now you're making a scene for the whole hospital to see? What on earth are you trying to do?"My voice sounded raspy, as though I were pushing every word out through a dry throat. "He reported me. He stole my research paper. He brought a mob to corner me in the hallway and force me to resign. And you're asking me what I'm trying to do?"Dante snapped out of his shock and took a
