Chapter 2

Author: Holly
Luca's eyes widened before they darted to the shattered remains of my phone anxiously.

Seconds later, though, he twirled his gun as his lips curled into a mocking sneer.

"Vera, I don't know why you've suddenly become such a chronic liar." Turning to look at the crowd below the stage, he put on a smile. "Let's not allow insignificant people or trivial matters to disrupt the flow of the banquet. Please, everyone, carry on."

Everyone stopped staring at me and resumed whatever they had been doing.

When I remained rooted to the spot, Luca frowned and dragged me over to a corner. Letting out a soft sigh, he tucked some loose strands of hair behind my ear.

"Don't worry. I'll be sure to investigate this matter thoroughly. Also, I can guarantee that this incident had nothing to do with Elena. Just wait till next month, okay? Once I finish handling the mess at the port and solidify my position as the Don, I'll definitely throw you a grand wedding."

Again with this promise.

I had seen over dozens of similar videos on my phone already. Some were dated back to a long time ago, while some were from the past few days.

Luca was certain that I would cave in once again, just like I had many times before.

I stared at the earnest expression on his face, feeling like something sharp had jabbed into my heart. A specific video from five years ago surfaced in my mind.

Back then, he had only just taken over the family, so his position was still rather shaky.

To alleviate his pressure, I kept to the shadows, ready to aid him at any moment.

Luca had a habit of hugging me from behind, his hot breath puffing against my neck as he peppered kisses on me.

Tilting my head back, I basked in his passionate love.

In a somewhat breathy voice, he had said, "Vera, I'm scared that I won't be able to do it. All I can ever think about is you."

I twisted around to cradle his face in my hands, stating firmly, "Luca, I'll help you, so you have to believe in yourself too."

His eyes reddened at my words. Gone was his usual cold and indifferent gaze.

"I'm sorry, Vera. For now, I still can't give you an official identity. I love you too much, and if I reveal you right now, there are plenty of people who will target you. I'm worried that I won't be able to protect you. Just wait for me a little longer, okay? Once I've stabilized my position as Don, I'll marry you and make you my Donna. Then, you'll be able to publicly stand by my side."

I had believed him then and willingly became a nobody by his side.

That lasted until half a year ago, when someone had poisoned his coffee. I had rushed over to knock the cup from his hand, but that only served to provoke the enemy, who detonated a bomb in retaliation. The resulting shockwave had sent me flying.

Luca had pulled my injured form from the ground and onto his lap, his face filled with guilt. Tears had streamed down his cheeks as he vowed that he would marry me after he had dealt with this incident.

However, after I had regained consciousness, he had changed his mind once again. "With your injuries, you wouldn't look good in your wedding dress, so let's wait till you've fully recovered. I can also use this time to gather my influence and strengthen my position. This way, I can give you a peaceful future."

Luca always had some sort of excuse to brush me off, with "stabilizing my position as Don" being his most used one.

Before I had lost my memories, I had watched as he eradicated all those who opposed him and became an outstanding Don, one step at a time.

After losing my memories, I could only rely on the videos I had taken to fall in love with him again, day after day. Yet, here he was, still using the same excuse.

"Luca."

Elena's voice dragged me out of my thoughts.

She reported to Luca, "Mario said that there's some discrepancy in the inventory records for the warehouse at the west port. We have to head over to take a look now."

For the past year, Elena had constantly used work matters as an excuse to build an invincible wall between me and Luca. Every single time, Luca would end up being lured away.

Luca's gaze remained on my face for a brief moment, but ultimately, he still turned to look at Elena.

"You should head to the flower shop for now. I'll clear my schedule for tomorrow and spend the day with you at the shop."

With that, the two of them walked off side by side.

Suddenly, Elena turned back to hand me a new phone.

"Your SIM card is already in it." Then, in a voice so soft that only the two of us could hear, she added, "Remember to look at the gallery."

My heart skipped a beat at that. I hastily checked the phone's gallery, only to find many different photos of Luca and Elena out on dates.

Without fail, every single one was dated to a time when Elena drew Luca away from me.

Elena glanced back at me, and when she noticed the shock written all over my face, her lips quirked into a provocative smile.

I stood in a corner of the hall, feeling waves of pain prick at my heart.

The moment I pushed open the gate, I immediately spotted Liliana waiting for me by the roadside. My contact list was rather short, and since Liliana happened to be the most recent person I had talked to, I had decided to send her that message. After getting in her car, Liliana told me everything she knew."Vera, you have a flower shop, and I'm your employee. You were taken away by Luca yesterday. He claimed that he was taking you to the hospital, but then you never returned. I'm not too sure about your whole amnesia situation, but what I'm certain of is that you and Luca aren't that close. You also don't seem to like him."I nodded and shot her a gentle smile.Once we had returned to the flower shop, I dug out a notebook and started jotting down today's events. Besides that, I also recorded a video.Liliana assured me softly, "Don't be scared, Vera. I'll always be by your side. Back when I couldn't find a job, you were the one who gave me this opportunity. Luca accepted the folder and began reading the documents inside, his brows furrowing deeper with each detail he read. The information they had gathered clearly denoted the sequence of events that had happened at the gala. That night, Elena had stolen my old phone when I wasn't paying attention, connected it to the large projector screen in the hall, and purposely played that video.Besides that, she had even deleted the control logs ahead of time before manipulating the crowd to pin all the blame on me. She claimed that I was acting out to gain attention, that I was using Luca's guilt toward me to keep him to myself. With such concrete evidence, nothing Elena could say would disprove her crimes. The air was deathly silent for a moment.Elena's mask cracked before crumbling completely as she was unable to maintain her usual composed demeanor. Her eyes flashed with panic, while her lips trembled. "No, that's not it… There must be some sort of misunderstanding going on here!""Eno

When I woke up, I found myself on a bed with my brain feeling fuzzy and empty.A man named Luca Valentini told me that we were lovers who had been dating for a very long time. He then explained that I had been injured, so I would wake up every day with amnesia.Still, I noticed a strange look in his eyes as he told me all this.Subsequently, he showed me videos of our dating history to help jog my memory of our past together. At first, I believed him. After all, I couldn't remember a thing, and he was the only person I had seen so far. The fact that he was incredibly attentive toward me only cemented that idea, proven when he called me downstairs to eat and the dishes were all to my liking. That was, until an unfamiliar woman barged into the house. She was gorgeous and claimed to be Luca's girlfriend.Jabbing a finger at me, the woman accused, "I truly hadn't expected that you would become even more devious in your schemes! Previously, you relied on putting on a pitiful act to g

My heart trembled in my chest, and it felt as though a large hand was clutching it tightly, making it hard for me to breathe. However, I regained my composure quickly. I didn't dare believe that I would have such bad taste as to fall for a man who didn't respect and trust me.Liliana, standing nearby with a pair of pruning shears, glanced between me and Luca. Then, in a soft voice, she asked me, "Vera, if he really is your boyfriend, how could he not know about your amnesia?"Hearing that, Luca froze, not knowing how to answer the question. His voice was tinged with embarrassment as he explained, "Vera, you don't remember me anymore because you didn't watch the videos about us. That's why you've forgotten who I am."I was sharp enough to catch a key piece of information. "Then why didn't I watch them?"Once again, Luca had no idea what he could say to that. There was no hiding the panic in his eyes now. He hastily took out his phone and started flipping through it, finally thrust

The man didn't answer, though he continued to stare at me assessingly for a long while. Eventually, he opened his mouth as though to speak, but ultimately, he couldn't seem to find the words.I suddenly recalled the paper I had seen after waking up earlier today, particularly the last sentence."If a weird man comes to the shop to bother you, just ignore him."I wondered if this was that man and speculated that he must have been harassing me. That was probably why I had left such a note for myself—to remind myself to be on my guard. With that thought in mind, I looked away from him and continued to busy myself around the shop.Liliana also noticed the man's odd behavior and surreptitiously nudged me, murmuring softly, "Vera, that guy is so handsome! But don't you think he looks rather familiar? I feel like I've seen him somewhere before…"I shook my head. "I don't know him."Just as I was about to move a pot of flowers to the yard out back, the man suddenly seized my arm.His b

The doctor studied my test results for a long time before finally letting out a sigh. His tone was grave as he asked me, "Are you sure that you want to stop receiving treatment? Based on these scans, your condition has worsened."From the moment I had been diagnosed with memory loss, this doctor had been in charge of my treatment. At his words, I was seized by a sudden wave of hesitation. When I still didn't answer after a while, he turned his monitor to show me the screen. "How about you answer after you watch this video?"The video was only three minutes long, yet throughout it all, my face remained wet with tears. It was a video of me receiving treatment.I sat in an empty room, hooked up to the medical equipment to receive my treatment, all while I kept repeating the same thing to myself."Vera Bellini, don't forget Luca Valentini! He's the most important person to you in your life, so you can't ever forget him!"From the way my face was twisted into a grimace, it seemed a
