Caspian

Asher's sudden intervention caught me off guard. I had been struggling to breach Kaida's mental barriers, and just as I managed to gain a fragile foothold, he barreled into me with a force that left me breathless.

Half-transformed into his wolf form, teeth bared, and eyes blazing with intensity, Asher snarled at me to back off.

I countered his momentum, flipping our positions so that I towered over him, pinning him to the ground. Asher wrestled against my grip, attempting to regain the upper hand, but I held firm. "What's gotten into you, Asher?" I growled, my eyes flashing red with irritation.

Asher's ferocity dissipated, and he lay still, his gaze faltering as he seemed to realize the intensity of his actions. "Caspian," he whispered, his voice laced with remorse.

I released him, standing up and offering a hand to help him to his feet. He accepted, his movements economical as he rose.

"I'm sorry," he apologized, his expression contrite.

"I was on the cusp of breaking through," I said, my voice low and accusatory.

Asher's eyes drifted to Kaida, who lay motionless on the bed. His face tensed until he caught the gentle rise and fall of her chest, and then he exhaled a sigh of relief, raking a hand through his hair.

"I'd never intentionally hurt Kaida," I stated, understanding the concern that had driven Asher's reaction. He had always been the empathetic one, effortlessly forming connections with those around him. Kaida had warmed up to him quickly, and I had witnessed their easy rapport. However, my possessiveness flared, disliking the idea of my mate bonding with anyone else, even Asher.

"That may be true," Asher said, "but she didn't want you in her head. You were pushing her limits."

"I was almost in."

"She could have died," Asher retorted. "You should have seen how she was trembling violently while you were inside her mind."

"I won't hurt her," I emphasized, my voice firm and deliberate.

Asher's muscles tensed as he confronted me. "You keep saying that, yet your actions put her life at risk. You knew better than to bring Kaida into our midst, given Kai's history with her. You're aware of his temperament—you've set her up for a potentially disastrous situation." His arms jerked toward Kaida as he accused me, and I found myself momentarily speechless.

I couldn't deny the validity of Asher's words; I had indeed been aware of the risks involved in having Kai and Kaida in close proximity.

I had wondered what specifically about Kaida triggered Kai's intense reactions. Ever since their past encounter months ago, when she had flipped us the bird, Kai had displayed uncharacteristic aggression whenever her name was mentioned. When I investigated the cause, I discovered it was Kai's fault, but he refused to listen to reason. He remained as obstinate as he had been as a child.

"I brought Kaida here because...," I began, my gaze drifting to her face. "She's my mate."

Asher's response was a stunned pause, a moment of silence as my words sank in. A heavy stillness followed before he gasped, "What?" in incredulity.

I met his gaze steadily. "Yes, Adrick confirmed it the day she arrived. She's my mate."

Asher's mouth hung open, and he shifted his jaw before closing it, his expression a mixture of surprise and contemplation.

I adjusted my stance, standing more firmly. "Do you understand what this means for us?" Asher remained silent, lost in thought. I placed a hand on his shoulder; he avoided my eyes, his gaze distant. I pressed on, "The mage's words hold truth—our roots are where we'll find the answers we seek. The time for change is drawing near."

Asher nodded slowly, his eyes refocusing as he met my gaze. "Are you certain about this?"

I nodded resolutely.

"Congratulations," he offered, a small, measured smile on his face.

I smiled back, hopeful. "I'm sure you and Kai will find your respective mates as well." Kaida was a turning point for us, a light in the darkness that had long plagued our lives. Freedom was now within reach, and I could almost taste the liberation.

"Nonetheless, I want you to be careful with her, Caspian," Asher cautioned. "If she doesn't want you in her head, you shouldn't force her."

"It would have been easier if I could utilize our mate bond," I replied.

"She hasn't accepted you," Asher reminded me. "You still have a long way to go before she can come to terms with that."

A soft smile tugged at my mouth as I considered Asher's observation. "She's quite feisty and a challenge to win over," I remarked. But I was undererred; nothing was impossible once my mind was set on it.

"Call an experienced doctor to examine her," Asher advised. "Don't risk conducting experiments that may go wrong on her."

I nodded in understanding. "I will look into finding a trustworthy doctor."

"Do that," Asher said, before excusing himself from the room.

After Asher departed, I approached Kaida's bedside, my gaze fixed intently on her face. With a soft sigh, I acknowledged the limitations of my abilities in this situation. Realizing there was little I could do to help her directly, I left the room to retrieve my phone and contact a trusted professional who could provide the necessary care.

Asher

Caspian's revelation still lingered in my mind: Kaida was his mate. Now, his uncharacteristic behavior since her arrival made sense.

As I walked past the hall leading to our living quarters, I exhaled slowly, taking in the extent of the damage. The area was littered with shattered bricks, punctured holes, and cracks, with blood splatters visible on some of the debris. Despite Caspian's apparent lack of serious injury, aside from a few scratches, the amount of blood on the floor suggested a more severe altercation.

I proceeded to Kai's room, anticipating that I would find him there. This scenario was the norm for him to lose control, only for Caspian to intervene and discipline him with pain, bringing him back to his senses. Afterward, Kai would typically retreat to his room, sulking and avoiding the house for an extended period.

I made a mental note to contact the repairman, Connor, to fix the damage.

Despite his occasional visits to our isolated residence, Connor had grown accustomed to our irregular requests and wisely chose not to pry. He was a professional, efficient in his work, and discreet in his nature. If he ever suspected anything unusual about our household, he knew better than to breathe a word, lest he face the consequences.

The rumors about us circulating in town were inconsequential, but the darker aspects of our lives needed to remain hidden until we found a resolution. It seemed the Light had finally decided to favor us.

As I entered Kai's room, the darkness enveloped me. I stood with my back against the door, allowing my eyes to adjust to the dim light as I searched for Kai. Knowing his volatile nature, I was cautious not to provoke him, aware that he might lash out if he felt threatened or intruded upon.

"There you are," I said when I finally spotted him slumped in a chair, his gaze fixed on me.

His eyes gleamed in the darkness as he relied on his animal senses within the dark recesses of his room. I moved toward the switch and flipped it on.

Kai flinched at the brightness that enveloped his room, closing his eyes tightly. He had always preferred the darkness and the wild since the past betrayal had wreaked havoc on our lives.

"Leave," he seethed through clenched teeth, his eyes shut in pain.

The injury on his ribcage was readily apparent, and it was taking longer to heal due to its origin – Caspian's claw. If a beta or lesser wolf had sustained such a gash from Caspian's or another Alpha's claw mark, they would likely have succumbed to their injuries within hours without treatment. The remedy was rare and expensive: Aconitum, also known as monk's hood or wolf's bane – a potent toxin to our kind that, when prepared with care, could serve as an effective treatment for life-threatening wounds.

Our father had once led our pack, but his death marked a turning point. Caspian took over, however we lost our people to the curse that had ravaged our lives. The memories of our past actions, driven by our inner demons, continued to haunt me. I pushed aside the reflections, unwilling to revisit the pain and guilt that lingered.

"How do you feel?" I asked Kai, glancing at his injury as it slowly began to heal.

Kai's body was resilient due to our alpha genes, although we didn't possess the same level of power as Caspian, who had inherited our father's blessing and authority as the next Alpha.

"Leave," Kai repeated, his voice low and menacing.

He still favored his injured side. What damage could he possibly intend to do in his current state?

Caspian "When are you going to inform her?" Asher inquired upon my return to the house.I had been away from home all day, occupied with business meetings and resolving familial matters.I was considerably fatigued upon my return, only inquiring about Kaida's well-being before collapsing onto the nearest couch.Asher offered me a glass of chilled water, posing his question to me."What?" I responded, not immediately comprehending the basis of his inquiry."Kaida? When will you reveal the truth to her? She is becoming suspicious." He seated himself on the chair opposite mine. "Indeed, you have been bestowing upon her preferential treatment exceeding the bounds of her job description. She is bound to become inquisitive."I rubbed my palm across my face, sitting upright. "She will be apprised when the appropriate time arrives. I cannot simply unload the information upon her. She would flee.""She might not. If you are, in fact, fated, she will be unable to resist the connection.""Trust

You should rest while your meal digests."I shook my head, suppressing a smile of amusement. "You realize you don't need to go to such lengths on my account. I understand you feel guilty about your brother's actions, but this is becoming excessive. You have already apologized.""This is not solely about an apology. I am doing this because I desire to."I made a face, pursing my lips. "I doubt you treated your previous domestic help in this manner.""What leads you to believe I did not?" Asher replied, and I promptly bit my lip.I had overestimated my worth, experiencing a tinge of embarrassment at my words."Alright," I said slowly, articulating each syllable deliberately. "However, I am not comfortable with another person cleaning up after me. Washing dishes has always been my forte." Or, rather, my method of expr

Kaida"Kaida!" Meredith exclaimed when the call connected. "Where have you been? I was worried sick." "I'm sorry. I was busy last night." "I was thinking of going to the police station if I didn't hear from you again by nightfall. You couldn't be that busy." "I know. You know that I'm just adjusting to how things are done around here. There's a lot to learn and catch up on.""How is it going? Is it that stressful?" Meredith asked, her voice etched with concern.I rubbed the side of my neck, where Kai's hand had held me in a chokehold the previous morning. That bastard. "Kaida? Kaida, are you there?" I snapped back to focus. "Yes, I am. Just got carried away." "Are you at work now?" "I'm about to be. I was immensely occupied last night. I'm taking a moment to catch my breath.""And they allowed it?" Meredith sounded skeptical, her perspective still shaped by the rumors about the Ragnars, despite having encouraged me to apply for the job. "It's either they want me to end up dead

Kaida"What are you doing?" I demanded, cocking my head to one side as I addressed Caspian. He barricaded the entrance with his body, blocking my path. I shifted to another side, and he mirrored my movement, still obstructing me. I muttered a sharp curse under my breath, yanking at my hair in frustration. "What do you want from me? I've quit. What part of that don't you understand?" I yelled, striking the inside of my palm with the side of my fist. "I was nearly killed less than twenty-four hours since I arrived under your roof." I paused, a sudden realization dawning on me, and gasped. "Oh God." I suspected I had walked myself into a precarious situation. My phone. I needed to get my stuff and leave immediately. I turned away from Caspian, scanning the room, but my phone and bag were nowhere to be seen. I spun back, demanding harshly, "Where are they?" Caspian feigned innocence, responding with a simple "What?" I glared at him. "My bag and phone. Where did you put them?" "They

Caspian I yearned to spend the night at Kaida's bedside, but such an action would have raised unnecessary questions. After all, she was purportedly the wife of one of my employees. My excessive display of concern would have been scrutinized by William, who I suspected had not entirely bought into my narrative regarding Kaida's relationship to my employee. William's perceptive nature made him a formidable individual, but since he chose not to press the matter, I opted to maintain my facade. As the first light of dawn crept over the horizon, I arose from my slumber, engaged in a rigorous exercise routine, and then attended to my personal grooming, donning a fresh set of attire. I subsequently checked in on Kai to determine if he had returned home the previous evening. My knocks went unanswered, prompting me to open the door and enter his room, surveying the dimly lit space. A deep sigh escaped my lips as I beheld the shattered windowpane. It appeared that Kai had succumbed to his in
