KaidaTwo months earlier It would have been great if crystals indeed fell around here; perhaps, I would have one single detail to be happy about living in this town. Crystal Falls was a quaint, bustling town where every local knew one another. There were hardly any secrets in this town. The locals, especially the old fogeys, were unrepentant gossipers. The town had been around since the first lupine community was established, making it one of the oldest communities in California and the hub for the annual convergence of all werewolves in California. I had grown up here. My ancestry stemmed from the soil of this land. Pity that I had failed them. I was unable to retain the inheritance that had been passed down through generations—the house—due to my inability to find a steady job and manage my finances effectively. I was barely getting by nowadays, given that I had just been laid off from my job recently. The owner claimed the store's earnings were insufficient to cover salary exp

KaidaI waited for the door to be opened after the chime announced my presence. I heard the shuffle of feet from inside as someone approached to answer the door. My heart thudded loudly in my ears, and my lips were pressed into a grim line. I pressed my resume flat against my thighs, nervousness flooding through me. I fidgeted, wondering which of the brothers would be opening the door, and praying it wouldn't be the thieving one. I had a poor record of effectively masking my emotions, and even though it had been months, the granola bars he stole from me still radiated fury within me whenever I reflected on that day. It wouldn't be in my best interest to glare at my potential boss with my fate hanging on their acceptance. I forced a smile onto my face as I heard the click of the door lock and the heavy wooden door swung open.Surprise flashed across Caspian's face when he saw me. He was the older brother, and I had researched the three brothers extensively that morning. Aside from

Kaida"So, how did it go?" Meredith bounced on the couch, tucking her legs underneath her, her eyes burning with curiosity, and an optimistic grin playing on her lips. "You nailed the interview, didn't you?" I responded with a slow nod, my lips clenched."Yippee!" Meredith squealed in excitement, punching the air with her fist. "You got the job! I'm so happy for you," she gushed. I gave her a bland look, which eventually forced her to stop her jubilation. Her smile vanished, replaced by a serious expression. "What?" I sighed. The question "Are you that eager to get rid of me?" hovered on the tip of my tongue, but I reconsidered voicing it. After all, she was only looking out for me in the best way she could. She had been generously hosting me in her apartment, despite my not contributing financially. I felt a sense of shame and guilt about that. "It's only on probation," I said instead, in a dry tone. "It's uncertain whether I'll be retained." Meredith furrowed her brows. "Why wo

KaidaI cleared my throat, drawing the brothers' attention toward me. Three pairs of eyes snapped in my direction, their gazes sharp and piercing. My gaze, however, was fixed on Asher. He didn't seem pleased with Caspian's action, and neither was I. Did I get a say in who escorted me to my room? I was clearly in no position to choose. Asher threw me a playful smirk. "Don't be scared, Red. We weren't about to go feral." I smiled faintly, my mouth parting wordlessly. I clamped it shut, opting for a soft humph instead. I felt Caspian's glare burning into my skin, but I ignored him.Asher waved a casual salute at me, starting to move. "See you around, Red." He began to walk back in the direction of the exit. "It's Kaida," I told him when he reached my side. He merely hummed, smiled once more, and left. I watched Asher until he was out of sight, feeling a sense of relaxation wash over me. He had that effect on me, and on everyone, from what I'd read.Kai got to his feet as well. My head

Caspian "Malachi!" I thundered, my voice booming with authority. Upon returning to the house, I sensed that something was amiss. Kaida was not in the sitting room where I had expected her to be waiting for me, nor was she in her room. I knew she would have questions regarding the contract, which was open to negotiation, as I had only amended it prior to mailing it to her address earlier that morning. I wanted to experience more of that fiery spark she possessed. I had deliberately goaded her with the absurd contract to gauge her reaction to it. Kaida didn't strike me as someone who would easily back down; otherwise, I would have assumed she had abandoned the endeavor, knowing she couldn't cope with my demands. The contract was merely a ruse, a farce designed to test her resolve. Aware that she was my mate, I was determined to ensure her well-being. There was no way I would permit her to exhaust herself. We could commence with a façade, but I would guarantee she wouldn't suffer und
