Julia’s POV
The next day, I was woken up by my mobile phone vibrating relentlessly. Alex’s name lit up the screen. He’d called a dozen times already, and a new one buzzed before I could even process the count. I didn’t expect him to be so persistent. In my previous life, he’d hated me, loathed me even. Now he couldn’t seem to leave me alone. I let the phone ring out, the shrill sound piercing the morning silence. I didn’t answer, not because I was afraid, but because I didn’t want to hear any pathetic words from him. Shortly, there was a message notification. I checked the messages he’d sent. “You dare ignore my calls?” I read. I blocked his number without hesitation. He didn’t deserve another second of my time. As I set my phone down. In my previous life, I’d wasted so much energy trying to make him love me, trying to fix what was irreparably broken. Not this time. This time, I’d put myself first. Shortly after I blocked Alex’s number and sank back into the peace of my thoughts, the door to my room flew open with a bang. Scarlett stormed in, her face flushed with anger and indignation. “You’re out of your mind!” she barked, pointing an accusing finger at me as if I’d committed some heinous crime. “Do you have any idea what you’ve done? You’ve embarrassed yourself, this family, and Alex’s family! You’re going to march over there right now, apologize, and revoke this absurd decision about withdrawing from the marriage!” I leaned back against the chair I was sitting in, crossing my arms. Her outburst didn’t faze me—it was predictable, even amusing in a twisted way. “Apologize?” I repeated, my voice calm but firm. “Why would I apologize for refusing to waste my life on a man who doesn’t love me? Why would I humiliate myself for someone who never respected me?” Scarlett’s eyes narrowed, her expression twisting into a sneer. “Because it’s not about love, you foolish girl! It’s about securing this family’s position! Do you think you can just throw away a marriage to someone as rich and powerful as Alex? Are you really that stupid? I want a better life for you.” I rose from my seat slowly, my gaze locking onto hers. “As a family member,” I began, my voice cold, “shouldn’t you be supporting me? Why are you so insistent that I sacrifice my dignity for this marriage?” For a moment, she faltered. The words seemed to have hit a nerve, and her confident cracked. She stammered, searching for an answer, before blurting out the truth I already knew. “Because Alex’s family is influential! Marrying into that family isn’t a loss—it’s a guarantee of wealth and status for us!” I scoffed, shaking my head. “For us? You mean for you. You’ve never cared about me or what’s best for me. All you care about is how you can benefit from me. You’ve spent years pretending to care about this family, but we both know your loyalty lies with yourself.” Her face turned crimson, and for a split second, I thought she might slap me. Instead, she clenched her fists and hissed, “You’ve always been ungrateful! After everything I’ve done for you—” But before I could speak, my teenage stepbrother, Jake, stepped forward, his voice sharp with anger. “No. I’m not letting this happen.” He glared at his mother. “You know damn well Alex treats her like shit. You want her to suffer? How selfish can you be?” “You don’t speak to your mother like that!” She scolded but Jake wasn’t done. He turned to me. “You don’t have to do this. You deserve better.” For the first time, I felt seen. In my previous life, my step brother was never on my side. He had always supported his mother and seeing that he is in my favour now, I couldn’t contain my astonishment. “You need to apologize to Alex’s family.” Said Scarlet. Jake let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “Apologize? To them? Are you serious, mom?” His gaze snapped to Scarlet, filled with fury. “Alex always cheats on her with Celeste, humiliates her, and you want her to apologize? What kind of twisted logic is that?” Scarlet’s face darkened. “Jake, you’re too young to understand…” “No,” he cut her off, jaw clenched. “I understand perfectly. You don’t care about her. You never have. You just want to keep your place in their good graces, even if it means throwing her to the wolves.” “Enough!” Scarlet snapped, her voice rising. “This is not your decision.” Jake shook his head in disgust. “No, but it’s hers. And she’s not some pawn you can push around.” Then, he turned back to me, his expression serious. “You don’t owe Alex or his family anything. If you walk away now, I’ve got your back.” I swallowed hard, surprised at how he was defending me. In my past life, Jake had never stood up for me like this. Scarlet scoffed, turning to me with a sneer. “So, what? You’re going to let a teenager dictate your decisions now?” Jake let out another scoff. “At least I’m not selling out my own family for a bunch of rich assholes.” His eyes flashed with fury as he turned to the door. “You know what? If Alex was here, I’d tell him to go to hell myself.” Scarlet gasped. “Jake!” But he wasn’t done. “Screw Alex. Screw his family. And screw you for trying to make her crawl back to him.” He took a deep breath and turned to me again, his voice was low and welcoming. “You don’t have to be afraid anymore.” “Jake, you shouldn’t talk to me with so much disrespect.” Scarlett snapped. I glanced at the clock on my nightstand. “No more discussion, I don’t have time for this. I’ll be attending to matters at the company today.”Julia’s POVI didn’t pick the call. Ever since Declan and I had made love, I’d decided to avoid him. The memory of that night clung to me every second, impossible to shake it off, but I’d made a promise to myself that whatever happened, it was a mistake and I’d act like it never happened. So, there was no need to answer his call. The phone’s incessant ringing filled the tense silence of the car. I braced myself, expecting Alex to snap, to unleash the storm brewing behind his tight-lipped expression. But he said nothing. As he started the car. I stared out the passenger window, my reflection faint against the glass. The weight of Alex’s silence pressed against me, heavier than any words he could’ve thrown at me. His words from earlier, about Victor Langston kissing my hand, still stung as he addressed me as Indecent. The word echoed in my mind. How dare he? I wasn’t some naive girl who’d swooned at Victor’s charm. It was a polite gesture, nothing more, and yet Alex had spun it into so
Julia’s POVI saw Alex approaching as he reached my side, his hand brushing my elbow urgently. “Julia, we need to leave. Something important came up.”I blinked. Why? I couldn’t quite place it. Victor Langston, who’d been mid-sentence about our conversation, paused, his brows lifting as he tried to register Alex’s tone. I glanced at Victor, then back at Alex. “Alright,” I said, keeping my voice calm. I didn’t want to argue. After all, I’d gotten Victor’s personal card to reach him. I could see him some other time.Victor’s warm smile disappeared as his eyes narrowed slightly, assessing Alex. “Everything okay, Alex?” he asked, his voice filled with curiosity.Alex’s jaw tightened, but he forced a nod. “It’s urgent. I’m sorry, Victor, we’ll have to cut this short.”I could tell Victor wasn’t thrilled about being interrupted. His posture stiffened, and he crossed his arms, pulling taut across his broad shoulders. “This is rather sudden,” he said, “I was just getting to know your lovely
Alex’s POVThe person who called was Celeste. I pressed the phone to my ear. “Celeste, what’s going on?” “Alex!” Her voice was sharp and loud, edged with desperation. “I’m outside, but this stupid security guard won’t let me in! I’ve been standing here forever, and he’s treating me like some kind of intruder. Tell him I’m with you!”I pinched the bridge of my nose, closing my eyes for a second. “Where are you exactly?”“At the main entrance, by the double!” Her words were filled with every frustration, and I could hear the faint murmur of the security guard in the background. “Alright, stay there. I’m coming.” I ended the call, slipping the phone back into my pocket. My jaw tightened as I glanced back at the ballroom. Julia was still standing where I’d left her. But for some reason, I didn’t understand why I felt uncomfortable leaving her there. Victor Langston leaned in closer, saying something that made her chuckle slightly and nodded. I didn’t have time to dwell on it. Celeste wa
Julia’s POVI forced myself to focus on something else but my eyes kept drifting toward the grand double doors where Celeste stood as I watched her being dramatic.“Alex!” she screamed his name as she leaned forward, trying to push past the security guard. “Alex, I’m here! Tell them to let me in!”Alex who was across the room, shaking hands with a group of suited men, his back to her. If he heard her, he gave no sign of it because the background music didn’t let him. The security guard placed a firm hand on Celeste’s shoulder, guiding her back toward the entrance. “Ma’am, you’re making a scene,” he said, his tone calm but cautious. “If you don’t have an invitation, you need to leave, or I’ll have to escort you out.”Celeste’s face flushed a deeper shade of red, her hands balling into fists at her sides. “This is ridiculous! He’s right there! Alex!” Her voice screamed out again and a few heads turned, whispers rippling through the crowd but Alex himself did not hear her. Suddenly, my
Julia’s POVThe morning light filtered through the curtains, casting soft golden streaks across the guest room. I stirred, my body weak as my eyes fluttered open, and for a moment, I was disoriented, the plush bedding and unfamiliar walls pulling me from the haze of sleep. Then I felt the weight of an arm draped across my waist. My heart lurched as I realized I was curled against Declan who was still asleep, our bare skin pressed together, the sheet covering us but I could feel we were both naked.Panic surged through me as last night came rushing back, the kiss, the way his hands had moved over me, the way I’d let myself get lost in him. My cheeks burned as I carefully extricated myself from his hold, moving inch by inch to avoid waking him. His face was peaceful, lips slightly parted, his hair falling messily over his forehead. For a fleeting second, I wanted to stay, to trace the lines of his jaw and pretend the world outside this room didn’t exist. But reality crashed in. I had t
Julia’s POVWhat? I glanced at Jake, who had that mischievous glint in his eyes whenever he wanted to act naughty.“Sleep over?” I repeated as I turned to face him fully. “Jake, no. It’s not that late, and we should just head back home. We can do a sleepover some other time.”Jake crossed his arms, his grin widening. “Come on, Jules. Live a little. When’s the last time you had a spontaneous night? This place is basically a castle.”I opened my mouth to argue, but Declan, standing beside me, stepped in before I could get a word out. His voice was calm, hid hand brushing lightly against my arm. “Julia, you guys are welcome to stay. We’ve got plenty of guest rooms. You don’t have to worry about a thing. I’ll make sure you’re comfortable.”His eyes met mine and for a moment, I forgot how to form a coherent sentence. The idea of staying here, in this beautiful place with Declan, felt like a dream I wasn’t sure I was ready to wake up from. But Jake’s insistence was relentless, and I could
