Chapter 2

Author: Clouded Path
That night, Bailey came to see me. She sat in a wheelchair, both hands wrapped in bandages.

Hayden wheeled her in, looking clearly annoyed. "Bailey has something to say to you."

Bailey's eyes were swollen and red. Her voice was soft. "I'm sorry, Sienna. I just love Hayden so much. Seeing the two of you get engaged made me lose control for a moment."

She glanced at my injury. "I've already been punished for what I did. Can you forgive me?"

Before I could speak, Hayden finished the conversation for her. "Bailey won't lay a hand on you again. Sienna, this ends here."

I asked Bailey, "Did you pick up the kettle yourself?"

"Yes," she replied.

"Did you know the water was freshly boiled before you poured it on me?"

Bailey's lips parted, but no words came out.

Hayden gripped the wheelchair handles. "That's enough."

"I'm asking her a question."

Bailey bit her lip and nodded. "Yes, I knew."

Two lawyers stood at the hospital room door.

Mom was about to let them in when Hayden suddenly stepped in front of me.

"Sienna, are you really going to put her in jail?"

"She nearly ruined my arm," I replied.

"Bailey saved my life!" His voice suddenly dropped. "When I was sixteen years old, I became seriously ill. Bailey donated her bone marrow to save me. I promised I'd protect her for the rest of my life."

A round silver pendant hung from Bailey's neck. It swayed gently with each breath.

Four numbers were engraved on it.

0716.

I stared at it for a moment. The numbers looked familiar.

When I was fifteen years old and in the hospital, I had received an identical pendant. When we moved later, I somehow lost it.

Bailey noticed me staring and quickly tucked the pendant inside her collar. "Sienna, it's just a keepsake."

Hayden stepped in front of her. "Have you seen enough?"

With that, he reached for the settlement agreement on my bedside table.

I pressed my hand against the paper. "Don't touch my things."

Hayden grabbed my hand and slowly tightened his grip. "Your dad is still negotiating the Westend project. Do you really think he'll agree to ruin that deal over a minor injury?"

At that moment, his malicious intent became clear. There was a sharp crack, and Hayden's index finger popped out of its joint.

He froze.

Bailey's face went pale too.

I looked at his crooked finger and reminded him softly, "Hayden, you were trying to hurt me."

"I was only trying to grab a piece of paper!"

"The protection spell knew you were trying to use it to pressure me."

Hayden jerked his hand back. "What do you mean by 'protection spell'?"

Mom stared at him icily. "You're welcome to try again."

Hayden didn't move.

-

From that day on, Hayden finally believed in the spell protecting me.

He made Bailey move out of Gardner Residence and replaced every staff member who knew what had happened at the engagement party.

Every day, he came to the hospital and stood about six and a half feet away from me.

Sometimes he brought flowers. Other times, he brought soup.

I thought he had at least learned to be afraid.

Three days later, he told me Bailey was going abroad.

"Once she's gone, we can start over."

I asked, "Can you really let her go?"

He fell silent for a moment. "I owe Bailey my life. I'll repay her with money. Once you and I are married, it'll be just the two of us."

He looked completely sincere when he said that.

Mom happened to be away.

I looked at the fading white flowers outside the window, and my resolve began to waver.

When Bailey was loaded into the police car, Hayden didn't try to stop the officers. He stood where he was, still clutching the pendant with the blank back.As Bailey passed him, she cried out his name.He asked her just one thing. "How many times did you read the letter I wrote to Sienna?"Bailey froze. "Many times.""So you knew who I had been waiting for this whole time."Bailey sobbed so hard her whole body shook.Hayden walked over to me.This time, he stopped about six feet from me. "Sienna, I'll make this right. Bailey will face every bit of what she's done. I'll also compensate you for all the losses we've caused you."Dad spoke calmly. "Maybe start by asking yourself what you have left to make up for it."Hayden's phone suddenly rang. His father roared over the phone, loud enough for everyone in the warehouse to hear. The cold-storage facility had been taken back by the Warner family, and the Westend project had been shut down. The money keeping the Gardner family

The warehouse was so quiet that only water dripping from the stopped cooling system could be heard. As Hayden stared at the blank space on the pendant, his eyes slowly grew red-rimmed."You lied to me for ten years?" he asked.Bailey shrank back. "But I did spend ten years with you. That part was real. When you woke up, you kept looking for your donor. I was just afraid you'd be disappointed. Then you started treating me so well. How could I bring myself to tell you the truth?"Hayden's hands trembled uncontrollably.Bailey wrapped her arms around his legs and sobbed. "Hayden, I lied about who I was, but my feelings for you are real! Sienna never tried to find you. She doesn't care about you at all. I was the one who stayed by your side through all those long nights."Hayden looked at me on the stretcher. The shock in his eyes gave way to regret and a desperate need to make things right, but it was far too late."Sienna, have you known this the whole time?""I only found out

Right then, Hayden's anger froze on his face.Bailey immediately grabbed the front of his shirt. "Sienna, are you seriously going to lie and say you saved him just to get back at me? Hayden saw my donor certificate back then."I asked her, "Was your ID number on the certificate?"Bailey fell silent."Donor privacy was protected at the time, so the certificate only showed a number," I said.Hayden spoke up on her behalf. "The number was 0716.""That's just a date." I looked at the pendant around Bailey's neck. "The actual donation number is engraved on the back of the pendant."Bailey covered her neckline without thinking.Mom pulled a clear evidence bag from her purse. Inside was another silver pendant. A small piece was chipped off the edge, and 0716 was engraved on the front.Layla explained quietly, "After the call came in, we checked the safe at Ms. Warner's former residence. The pendant had been there all along."Hayden turned to Bailey. "Where did you get yours?""The

Dad didn't lose his temper. He simply pulled out his phone and made a call."Seal off the entire facility."Hayden sneered, "South Bay belongs to the Gardner family.""But the land belongs to the Warner family," Dad said.Dad turned his gaze toward the warehouse entrance. Several workers were taking down the sign at the entrance and putting up a new one."Your father couldn't afford to build this complex three years ago. He traded 15 percent of the Gardner family's shares for this land. The contract clearly states that if a fatal accident occurs on the property, the Warner family has the right to take it back."Hayden's face fell. "That clause was only precautionary.""Well, now we're using it.""Mr. Warner, are you really going to throw away years of goodwill between our families for Sienna?"Dad chuckled. "I work hard so that when someone wrongs her, she never has to put family ties first."Hayden was about to say more, but Bailey suddenly tugged at his sleeve. "Hayden, I c

Dozens of black refrigerated trucks blocked the entrance to the cold-storage facility.Their headlights came on at once, flooding the entire warehouse with harsh white light.Mom strode in wearing high heels. My dad, Byron Warner, Ian, and a team of paramedics followed close behind.Layla rushed ahead of everyone, her eyes frighteningly bloodshot.Bailey hurried over to meet them. "Mrs. Warner, Sienna locked herself inside. I was just about to look for someone to rescue her."Mom glanced at the remote in her hand. "Open the door.""The door is broken.""Give me the remote," Mom demanded. Bailey hid it behind her back. "This only controls the temperature. It can't open the door."Mom chuckled. "Are you saying Sienna walked into the freezer herself just to steal a pendant?""The security camera caught everything," Bailey replied."Fine." Mom pointed toward another freezer. "That freezer is open, and it's just as cold. Get in there and prove it."Bailey froze. "What?""You'r

Outside the door, Bailey pulled out a remote control. The temperature reading on the wall thermometer dropped to -18°F.I looked down at my wristband. My body temperature had already fallen below 95°F.It let out a sharp warning beep.I pressed the button to call Layla, but there was no signal.Bailey held up her other phone and gave it a little shake."There's a signal jammer installed in the warehouse. As for the woman you brought with you, security has her detained." Her smile grew sweeter by the second. "Sienna, who are you waiting for? Hayden?"When I didn't answer, she started a video call.A few seconds later, Hayden's face appeared on the screen. He was in an airport lounge. "Bailey?""Hayden, I came to the cold-storage facility to pick up the last of my stuff, but Sienna suddenly showed up." Bailey turned the camera toward me. "She locked herself in the freezer and is forcing me to hand over the pendant."Hayden shot to his feet. "Sienna, why did you go in there?
