Chapter 3

Author: Clouded Path
On the day I was discharged, Hayden had to leave town on short notice.

He said there was an incident at the Gardner family's cold-storage facility and promised to pick me up by that evening at the latest.

Before he left, Hayden brought me an access card.

"Our new home is still being set up. You can stay at the apartment in South Bay for now. This card opens every door on Gardner family property."

I took the card.

He looked at my bandaged arm and said softly, "I've already warned Bailey. She won't show up in front of you again."

Half an hour after Hayden left, I got a message from Bailey.

It contained only a photo that showed the round pendant marked 0716. There was also a yellowed thank-you letter beside it.

She said she had decided to leave behind everything that had to do with Hayden.

"Sienna, I'm already on my way to the airport. I've left these things in a locker at the South Bay cold-storage facility. Could you give them to Hayden for me? Once he has them, I won't come back."

I showed the message to Layla Tucker. She was someone Dad had assigned to stay by my side.

Layla had only two jobs. One was to remind me to eat, and the other was to check me for new injuries.

She shook her head as soon as she finished reading the message. "I'll get them for you."

"Bailey specifically asked me to go."

"Which means it's definitely a trap," she said.

I stared at the pendant in the photo. "I've seen that thank-you letter before."

When I was fifteen years old, I spent two months in the hospital.

I couldn't feel pain, and my family worried that routine exams might miss an injury. So they had me stay in the hospital for a full checkup every year.

That year, the bone marrow registry contacted us. I was a match for a boy who was in critical condition. My bone marrow could save his life.

Dad was firmly against it, but Conrad said the protection spell would protect me if I acted with good intentions.

I signed the consent form in secret.

After the donation, the hospital passed along an unsigned thank-you letter.

At the end of the letter was one sentence. It read, "Once I survive, I'll come find you."

The handwriting in the photo was exactly the same as the letter I had received.

Layla looked taken aback. "Was Hayden the boy who received your donation?"

"I don't know," I replied.

"Then you definitely can't go."

I picked up my coat. "You're coming with me."

Before Conrad died, he had given me one last warning.

The protection spell could shield me from other people's malice, but it couldn't stop me from walking into danger myself.

I had never been one to take chances, but that letter was tied to the life Hayden had owed someone for ten years.

It might also explain why Bailey kept daring to provoke me.

I had to see for myself.

-

The South Bay cold-storage facility had just been built, and the place was eerily empty.

When Layla drove up to the entrance, a security guard stopped her.

"Only Ms. Warner is registered in the system."

I showed him the access card Hayden had given me. The gates opened at once.

Layla fastened a temperature-monitoring wristband around my wrist.

"I'll wait at the entrance," she said. "If you're not out in five minutes, I'll call for help."

I nodded.

Bailey was standing beside the warehouse door. She hadn't gone to the airport. Both her hands were still wrapped in bandages, and the pendant was no longer around her neck.

"I knew you'd come, Sienna."

I looked past her. "Where are the things?"

"Inside." She pointed to a heavy silver door. "My hands are still injured. You'll have to get them yourself."

Behind the door was a huge walk-in freezer. A cardboard box sat at the end of the shelves.

I stayed where I was. "Bring the box out here."

Bailey smiled. "Are you afraid of me, Sienna?"

"I'm avoiding trouble."

"There are security cameras here, and you have your protection spell. What could I possibly do to you?" She raised her heavily bandaged hands. "I've already learned my lesson."

I looked up at the security camera. Its indicator light was on. The freezer door was wide open, too.

I swiped my access card anyway and walked over to the box.

There was only a white scarf inside.

Suddenly, a dull bang rang out behind me.

The silver door had shut.

Bailey waved at me through the observation window.

I walked over and pressed the emergency door release, but nothing happened.

"You unplugged the power source?" I asked.

She smiled and held up a black power plug. "Sienna, your protection spell only punishes people who touch you with bad intentions, but I haven't touched you."

Suddenly, cold air poured from overhead.

The numbers on the wall thermometer dropped fast. The temperature fell from 14°F to 0°F.

Bailey took out her phone and pointed it at me through the observation window.

"You used Hayden's card, then walked right into the Gardner family's freezer. By the time anyone finds you, the cameras will have recorded you stealing from them. As for why the door closed, that was just an equipment malfunction."

I touched my arm. I couldn't feel the cold or any pain.

However, my fingertips were turning white.

"Bailey, are you trying to freeze me to death?" I asked.

She leaned closer to the glass. "Let's see if your spell can hear you now."

When Bailey was loaded into the police car, Hayden didn't try to stop the officers. He stood where he was, still clutching the pendant with the blank back.As Bailey passed him, she cried out his name.He asked her just one thing. "How many times did you read the letter I wrote to Sienna?"Bailey froze. "Many times.""So you knew who I had been waiting for this whole time."Bailey sobbed so hard her whole body shook.Hayden walked over to me.This time, he stopped about six feet from me. "Sienna, I'll make this right. Bailey will face every bit of what she's done. I'll also compensate you for all the losses we've caused you."Dad spoke calmly. "Maybe start by asking yourself what you have left to make up for it."Hayden's phone suddenly rang. His father roared over the phone, loud enough for everyone in the warehouse to hear. The cold-storage facility had been taken back by the Warner family, and the Westend project had been shut down. The money keeping the Gardner family

The warehouse was so quiet that only water dripping from the stopped cooling system could be heard. As Hayden stared at the blank space on the pendant, his eyes slowly grew red-rimmed."You lied to me for ten years?" he asked.Bailey shrank back. "But I did spend ten years with you. That part was real. When you woke up, you kept looking for your donor. I was just afraid you'd be disappointed. Then you started treating me so well. How could I bring myself to tell you the truth?"Hayden's hands trembled uncontrollably.Bailey wrapped her arms around his legs and sobbed. "Hayden, I lied about who I was, but my feelings for you are real! Sienna never tried to find you. She doesn't care about you at all. I was the one who stayed by your side through all those long nights."Hayden looked at me on the stretcher. The shock in his eyes gave way to regret and a desperate need to make things right, but it was far too late."Sienna, have you known this the whole time?""I only found out

Right then, Hayden's anger froze on his face.Bailey immediately grabbed the front of his shirt. "Sienna, are you seriously going to lie and say you saved him just to get back at me? Hayden saw my donor certificate back then."I asked her, "Was your ID number on the certificate?"Bailey fell silent."Donor privacy was protected at the time, so the certificate only showed a number," I said.Hayden spoke up on her behalf. "The number was 0716.""That's just a date." I looked at the pendant around Bailey's neck. "The actual donation number is engraved on the back of the pendant."Bailey covered her neckline without thinking.Mom pulled a clear evidence bag from her purse. Inside was another silver pendant. A small piece was chipped off the edge, and 0716 was engraved on the front.Layla explained quietly, "After the call came in, we checked the safe at Ms. Warner's former residence. The pendant had been there all along."Hayden turned to Bailey. "Where did you get yours?""The

Dad didn't lose his temper. He simply pulled out his phone and made a call."Seal off the entire facility."Hayden sneered, "South Bay belongs to the Gardner family.""But the land belongs to the Warner family," Dad said.Dad turned his gaze toward the warehouse entrance. Several workers were taking down the sign at the entrance and putting up a new one."Your father couldn't afford to build this complex three years ago. He traded 15 percent of the Gardner family's shares for this land. The contract clearly states that if a fatal accident occurs on the property, the Warner family has the right to take it back."Hayden's face fell. "That clause was only precautionary.""Well, now we're using it.""Mr. Warner, are you really going to throw away years of goodwill between our families for Sienna?"Dad chuckled. "I work hard so that when someone wrongs her, she never has to put family ties first."Hayden was about to say more, but Bailey suddenly tugged at his sleeve. "Hayden, I c

Dozens of black refrigerated trucks blocked the entrance to the cold-storage facility.Their headlights came on at once, flooding the entire warehouse with harsh white light.Mom strode in wearing high heels. My dad, Byron Warner, Ian, and a team of paramedics followed close behind.Layla rushed ahead of everyone, her eyes frighteningly bloodshot.Bailey hurried over to meet them. "Mrs. Warner, Sienna locked herself inside. I was just about to look for someone to rescue her."Mom glanced at the remote in her hand. "Open the door.""The door is broken.""Give me the remote," Mom demanded. Bailey hid it behind her back. "This only controls the temperature. It can't open the door."Mom chuckled. "Are you saying Sienna walked into the freezer herself just to steal a pendant?""The security camera caught everything," Bailey replied."Fine." Mom pointed toward another freezer. "That freezer is open, and it's just as cold. Get in there and prove it."Bailey froze. "What?""You'r

Outside the door, Bailey pulled out a remote control. The temperature reading on the wall thermometer dropped to -18°F.I looked down at my wristband. My body temperature had already fallen below 95°F.It let out a sharp warning beep.I pressed the button to call Layla, but there was no signal.Bailey held up her other phone and gave it a little shake."There's a signal jammer installed in the warehouse. As for the woman you brought with you, security has her detained." Her smile grew sweeter by the second. "Sienna, who are you waiting for? Hayden?"When I didn't answer, she started a video call.A few seconds later, Hayden's face appeared on the screen. He was in an airport lounge. "Bailey?""Hayden, I came to the cold-storage facility to pick up the last of my stuff, but Sienna suddenly showed up." Bailey turned the camera toward me. "She locked herself in the freezer and is forcing me to hand over the pendant."Hayden shot to his feet. "Sienna, why did you go in there?
