Chapter 3

Author: Ashes & Bones
Henry began finding fault with me all the time. He went so far as to move my seat to the last row of the class.

I was slightly nearsighted, and a pair of glasses in the city cost several hundred dollars—that was nearly a month's income for Mom and Dad—so I was reluctant to get one. I eventually had to sit there in class, holding up my head and squinting as hard as I could.

Henry noticed and asked pointedly, "Why are you sticking your neck out like a turtle, Timothy? Is that some custom from your village?"

I could already pick up on his subtle insults by then, and as a high schooler, I felt utterly embarrassed by that. I blushed instantly when the female students in class turned around to stare at me. I ducked my head down, trying to make myself as small as possible.

Despite everything, I still kept my grades in the top five of the entire grade.

I kept my head down in class, thinking I could get through high school without any problems, but that summer incident after my first year became a nightmare I wished I could forget.

It was one of those muggy summer nights during evening study hall. Though the air conditioning was running, the room still felt sticky and warm.

It was then that a smell crept up from the back of the room—sour and rank, with an odd fishy sweetness underneath. It spread like an infection, with students pulling their sleeves over their noses and looking around in repulsion.

A couple of male classmates were whispering in the back row, and I heard everything they said.

"What's with this rancid smell? It smells awful!"

"Oh no! It might be the lab mouse I killed for biology class! I tossed it into the air conditioner!"

"You dumbass! Why would you stuff a dead mouse in the air conditioner in the middle of summer? It's no wonder it stinks so bad!"

Those in the back, who usually never paid attention in class, started laughing among themselves.

Just then, Henry, who had been sitting in the front to supervise the class, caught the smell as well. He walked over with a grim expression and picked up the wooden ruler from the desk without saying a word.

I was completely absorbed in my homework when the heavy footsteps stopped next to my desk. I then heard the sound of the wooden ruler whistling through the air before striking my back.

I jolted from the pain and cried out instinctively.

I instantly felt my heart sink when I caught sight of Henry's grim expression and sly gaze.

"How long has it been since you showered, Timothy?" Henry looked at me with disgust, making a big show of pinching his nose.

In that instant, all my classmates turned around to look at me, their gazes pinning me to the spot like nails.

It was only then that I understood what he was implying, so I quickly shook my head. "I shower every single day! I swear it's not me!"

"Who else could it be? I clearly smell a foul odor like a pigpen coming from you, Timothy!"

I was rendered speechless after hearing that. Henry was the only one who knew that Mom and Dad raised pigs for a living.

I never cared about that back in the village, but after seeing my classmates get dropped off in expensive cars and brag about designer clothes, I gradually began to understand class differences.

That was when I started feeling self-conscious about my background.

Henry leaned in and took a deep sniff. He suddenly gagged dramatically and pointed directly at me. "You're definitely the culprit! You smell just like one of the pigs found in the pigpen in the rural villages! How dare you deny it, Thomas!"

Those around me started covering their mouths and giggling among themselves. Their mocking laughter left my whole face burning red.

"Your family's poverty is no excuse to ignore basic hygiene, Timothy. How do you expect others to concentrate on their studies when you smell so terrible?"

"You have such a tanned complexion, as if you haven't washed off those layers of dirt in years! You smell strange as well, so no one in their right mind would want to be classmates with you!"

I finally broke down, tears welling up in my eyes. "I swear it's not me, Mr. Hudson! There's a dead mouse inside the air conditioner!"

I raised my voice and pointed straight at the other students in the back row. "I'm telling the truth! I literally just overheard them saying it! You can ask them yourself if you don't believe me!"

Several of the guys were just about to step in and clear things up for me, but Henry spoke over all of them in a loud voice.

"I've been to your house for a home visit. There was pig feed all over the floor, and the dining table was caked in grime! Why bother denying it, Timothy? That's enough. I'm not asking you to do anything—just go stand in the hallway so that you don't stink up the entire classroom."

That was all a lie! He was making everything up!

Henry turned on his heel and walked off, leaving me frozen in place.

Those casual remarks meant nothing to him, but they drove a wedge between my classmates and me, subjecting me to silent abuse. They started calling me "Stinker Tucker" after that incident.

They went out of their way to avoid me, and what little self-esteem I had left was totally destroyed.

I frantically scrubbed myself in the shower once I returned to my dorm room. I grabbed the soap bar and scrubbed my skin raw, but it didn't change my tanned complexion. I couldn't wrap my head around why I was singled out just for being a little poor.

My classmates completely ostracized me from that day onward.

I had no idea who had posted the story on the school's online forum, but students from other classes started pointing at me and whispering. I pleaded with Henry to explain the truth, but he just brushed it off every time, saying I was making a big deal out of nothing.

I eventually couldn't take it anymore and stormed into the office. Henry smiled as he proposed a solution.

"How about you pay for a new air conditioner for the classroom? I'll consider the matter settled once you do that, Timothy."

I had expected it to some degree, but Ivan's shameless behavior still managed to astound me.Sadie stared at me in disbelief. "You definitely can't hire someone who would do this to his own father, I gave her a reassuring nod. "It doesn't matter how skilled he is when he's rotten on the inside. How could I ever feel at ease hiring a person with such terrible character? What's more, today is only the beginning. I'm not doing this just to watch a nasty dogfight between father and son. I'm doing it for…"I picked up the faded old photographs and the various pieces of evidence. Ivan had given me all the evidence Henry had kept hidden. I also had my lawyer and private investigator search for the former victims mentioned in the live stream. I wasn't going to accuse anyone without evidence like Henry had. I chose to handle it through legal channels and make sure he faced justice.…I was present on the day the police took Henry into custody. He was a teacher who had spent his whole li

Just as expected, Ivan flew back to his hometown right after leaving the company. He went straight into Henry's bedroom and started digging through his old belongings. Ivan had considered the situation carefully. Henry had insulted a few students and taken some bribes, but he was already old enough to retire. He was aware that even if those things came to light, they wouldn't amount to much.He only cared about letting me vent my frustration. He grabbed an old duffel bag and packed away all of Henry's old belongings, not even leaving his official IDs behind.Henry's bedroom was eventually stripped bare, looking like a disaster zone after a tornado.Ivan launched a live stream a week later. He even got everyone in the company to tune in and bribed a local influencer to mirror the live stream. He had a pretty eye-catching title for the live stream, too—"Exposing My Vice Principal Father for the Greater Good."That live stream pulled in over 50,000 viewers and landed on the local

I froze for a moment when I got a clear look at Henry's aging face. He, who had once been so overbearing and disdainful of the poor, looked just like an average elderly man now.I suddenly wondered if my parents would have looked like this if they had lived to this day. I tightened my fists at that thought and walked over to them.Henry suddenly dropped to his knees before me before I could even say anything. He then grabbed my pant leg and said, "I was completely in the wrong back then, so please don't make things hard for my son, Mr. Tucker!"In that instant, most of the people in the company, including the executives, gathered around to see what was happening.Henry shed crocodile tears and said helplessly, "I know I was a little harsh with you during your first year in high school, but I never expected you to hold a grudge over it for so long. I was only trying to help you back then. "Isn't it only right for teachers to reprimand their students? You only criticize the ones yo

Sadie looked at me with concern and handed over an open bottle of water. "You alright, Timothy? Is something wrong? Do you want to head back and take a rest first?"Seeing the concern on Sadie's face, I reached over and held her hand, finally coming back to my senses.I didn't answer her question. I turned to look at Ivan instead, saying, "Your father, Henry Hudson, was my homeroom teacher when I was in my first year of high school."Sadie finally put it together and whipped her head toward me. "Is that the Henry you told me about? Is Ivan his son?"She looked extremely angry as she tightened her grip on my hand. Sadie was the only family I had left. She had heard about my past and had cried many times because of what I had gone through.Ivan clearly missed the point and hurriedly said, "That's quite a coincidence. It's just that my father has already been promoted to vice principal. I even have to treat him like one whenever I'm at home. His guidance played a big part in my stu

Henry had taken all of our family's savings.I knew he had probably taken a substantial amount for himself. After all, the new air conditioners in the classroom were just two cheap, off-brand ones. But I didn't dare to question him. It wasn't because I was afraid—I just couldn't bear to disappoint Mom and Dad after all the sacrifices they had made for me.I started blocking out everyone's judgment from that point on and threw myself into my studies. I was convinced that good grades were my ticket into a top university, where I could eventually land a high-paying job and support Mom and Dad.Henry stopped picking on me from then on, so I enjoyed a relatively peaceful stretch of time. One day, I suddenly received devastating news. Dad had taken a part-time delivery job at night because our family needed money. He became so tired that he fell asleep at the wheel and ended up in a car accident.I was attending Henry's class when the call from the hospital came through.Although a t

I asked tentatively, "H-How much does an air conditioner cost?""It's not much—just 2,800 dollars," Henry replied casually as he wiped his wristwatch.I was absolutely stunned after hearing that amount. I quickly suppressed the idea I had just formed, realizing that even if we sold all the family's pigs, we would only fetch around 7,000 dollars—and it was all money my family had worked hard for. "It's fine then, Mr. Hudson. I'll be heading off now."I kept my mouth shut and turned to leave, feeling thoroughly defeated.Just then, Henry started chatting loudly with another teacher behind me. "You know, my dog has had an upset stomach lately. He won't eat any dog food I buy him, so I had to buy imported steak instead. I bought 20 slabs for only 2,800 dollars, which isn't expensive at all! "That dog of mine seriously lives better than some people do!"Hearing that, my eyes turned bloodshot, and a hollow ache settled in my chest, as if someone had stabbed a hole right through my
