Chapter 3

Author: Rose Funeral
Just before we left for the train, Little Zoe suddenly came down with a high fever.

My mother forgot about the train and ran with me in her arms to the hospital.

“I’m sorry, ma’am, but we’re completely understaffed right now.”

As soon as the doctor said that, my mother fell to her knees.

“Please, doctor! I’m begging you. My daughter is only five years old. She’s in critical condition!”

The doctor said helplessly, “Ma’am, it’s not that I don’t want to help. It’s just that Mr. Xanders’ older daughter has a cold, and all our pediatric doctors have been sent to treat her.”

My mother rushed out of the hospital like a madwoman.

She took a cab and went from one hospital to another. At every single one, she was turned away.

“Please, somebody help me. Save my daughter!”

But the answer was always the same. All of the pediatrics had been transferred to the private hospital under Xanders Group.

My mother’s mind went blank. She called my father with trembling hands.

“Rowan, Zoe is dying. Please save her. I’m begging you, please.”

My father said that he would only agree to have someone treat me if my mother did a live broadcast apologizing to Layla and admitting that she was the other woman.

I knew what would happen if my mother gave in. I shook my head and told her to refuse.

However, my mother agreed without hesitation.

She turned to me and said, “I don’t care if they insult me online. As long as you’re okay, that’s all that matters.”

My father was terrified that Layla might suffer even the slightest grievance. He even drove traffic to her livestream.

Countless vicious comments flooded the comment section. My mother was soon overwhelmed by the barrage of insults.

The hashtag “#AileenJenkinsHomewrecker” quickly shot to the top of the trending charts.

My father was finally satisfied.

Just as he was about to call a doctor over to examine me, Layla clutched her stomach and cried out in pain.

No one paid any more attention to my mother or me. They all crowded around Layla.

My mother desperately grabbed a passing doctor and pleaded, “Please, take a look at my daughter first. She really doesn’t have much time.”

The doctor shoved my mother’s hand away. “Mrs. Xanders is having complications. Get out of the way, all of you!”

My mother was pushed so hard that she slammed into the wall. I rushed over to steady her.

“Mom, are you okay?”

My mother ignored me. She stumbled after them, unsteady on her feet.

“I’m begging you! Please, just take one look at my daughter.”

Just then, the doctor rushed out in a panic.

“Mr. Xanders, we’ve got an emergency. Mrs. Xanders is hemorrhaging badly. She needs a blood transfusion right now!”

My father shouted at him, “Call the blood bank now, then!”

The doctor wiped his sweat and said, “The problem is, she has that rare Rh-negative blood type. The hospital doesn’t have any matching blood right now.”

My mother shuddered violently as she tried to pull me away.

At that moment, my father’s gaze fell on Little Zoe.

He asked elatedly, “Z-Zoe is Rh-negative too, isn’t she?”

On the way home, my mother asked me, “Did your father really have no feelings for me at all?”I had lied to my mother. In my version of the story, my father never loved her. He only used her.The truth was that his love always came too late. He only felt sorry after she was already gone. That had been true in the old timeline. It had proven itself to be true again in the new timeline. But what difference did that make?I had been given one chance to stop her before it was too late. She was still young and could make other choices. She was no longer that forty-year-old woman everyone pitied. Matchmakers even started showing up at the door.I responded, “Does it even matter whether he did or not?”Would the pain he had caused her just vanish because he loved her?My mother quietly stared out the window at the streetlights blurring past. The cab was quiet, except for Little Zoe’s soft breathing in her arms.I studied my mother’s face. Her older self in the other timeline wou

I struggled with all my might, but I was no match for a grown man’s strength. The van drove straight onto the highway. The scenery outside the windows changed from small city streets to rolling hills.Little Zoe started to cry. “Where are you going?”I pulled her into my arms. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”My father must have realized that my mother would not budge, so he decided to go after Zoe instead. He took out a beautiful rag doll to get into Little Zoe’s good behavior. “Zoe, do you like this?”She looked at the doll and pressed herself closer to the car window.I had never liked dolls since I was little. I liked Ultraman. When she did not take it, he set the doll down on the seat and reached out to pat her head.I held her close and moved away. His hand froze in midair. It took him a while to pull it back. The car drove on for a very long time. Little Zoe began to sob. “I want Mommy...”“She’ll be here soon. Just hang on a little longer, Zoe.”“Zoe, I’m your daddy.

I instinctively shielded Little Zoe behind me and took her on a longer route home. But as soon as we walked through the door, I found that same car parked right outside our building.Standing next to the car was my father. The moment he saw me, he froze.“Zoe.”Little Zoe peeked out from behind me timidly. He gulped and crouched down. “Zoe, I’m Daddy.”Little Zoe hid behind me again.“No, you’re not. I don’t have a daddy.”I saw his body stiffen. Just then, footsteps echoed from the stairwell. My mother came down carrying a grocery basket. The moment she saw my father, her expression darkened.“How did you find this place?”He stood up. “Aileen, I’m here to take you and Zoe back.”She shoved the grocery basket into my hands and pushed me toward the entrance.“Zoe, take your sister upstairs.”As I walked away, I heard him say behind me, “I’m already dealing with the situation with Layla. Just give me some time. I’ll make this right for you.”My mother said coldly, “W

The weather in Amity City was much better than in Harbor City.As soon as we got out of the car, I saw my grandparents, whom I had never met before. They looked at me with curiosity. My mother did not know how to explain my identity at that moment.I stepped forward and greeted them with a hug.The two elderly people were taken aback. Their eyes darted back and forth between my mother and myself. My mother said softly, “She’s a friend’s daughter. She’ll be staying with us for a little while.”Grandma did not ask further questions. She simply touched my head with a tender expression and said, “She looks just like you did when you were little.”My mother first took Little Zoe to the hospital for a checkup. The results were unexpected. The doctor said all her vitals were normal. She had also recovered from her cold.My mother frowned and turned to me. “What actually happened back then? Did they not draw any blood? Did they just give you a fever shot?”I shook my head and said I

Before Layla could finish speaking, Rowan had already broken free from the firefighters holding him back and charged into the still-smoking ruins.“Mr. Xanders!”“Sir, you can’t go in!”Everyone panicked. Several firefighters rushed in after him.Layla stood frozen in place as her face turned pale. For some reason, a strange, uneasy feeling crept up on her.Rowan was not supposed to act like that.He was supposed to be that cold, detached man who always put profit first. He should not have rushed into a burning building for Aileen and that brat.Word began to spread within Harbor City’s upper-class society that Rowan had lost his mind.He had stopped functioning over a mistress.Rowan’s grandfather, Andrew, flew into a rage. He had Rowan knocked unconscious and dragged back to the family home. When Rowan woke up, Andrew snorted coldly, “How could you throw your life away for some random woman?”Rowan did not explain himself. He did not argue either.Andrew was visibly ups

The documents in Rowan’s hands slipped. Papers were scattered all over the floor. He rushed to the building without a moment’s hesitation.Jack shouted from behind him, “Mr. Xanders! The fire is spreading fast! The fire trucks aren’t here yet. You can’t—”Before Jack could finish, Rowan had already dashed out of sight.Black smoke poured from the top of the hospital and spread across the sky.Rowan pushed against the flow of people fleeing downward.A window at the end of the hallway exploded outward. Shards of glass flew everywhere. Waves of heat rushed toward him.“Aileen—!”The sound of an explosion swallowed his voice. At the corner, a nurse crouched on the floor, coughing.“Th-There was a woman... holding a kid... they got stuck on the seventh floor...”Rowan had just reached the stairwell when a pair of hands grabbed him tightly.“Sir, the upper floors are sealed off. You can’t go up there!”It was the hospital’s head of security.“Move! My daughter’s up there!”Ro
