Chapter 2

Author: Rose Funeral
I turned and saw my father. He looked exactly as he had been a decade ago.

He looked down at Layla with tender exasperation.

“The doctor said you’re supposed to avoid unhealthy food.”

Layla leaned coquettishly against him. “I only had one little bite. Don’t be so hard on me.”

I quietly glanced at my mother.

She stared at my father with a pale face. He was facing away from her.

When he noticed my mother, his gaze was calm and indifferent. He seemed to be staring at a stranger.

I expected my mother to impulsively rush forward and confront him.

Instead, she silently held five-year-old me tightly in her arms.

After my father left with Layla, my mother wept silently.

She showed me a message on her phone. My father had told her not to make a scene.

I tried to comfort her, but she just kept crying.

“Mom, don’t cry. He’s not worth it.”

That night, my father came to the remote town where my mother lived. She punched and kicked him while crying her heart out.

“Why did you lie to me? What did you take me for?

“Do you have any idea that our daughter has been mocked all these years? They all called her a fatherless child!”

My father silently pulled out a bank card and shoved it into her hand.

“There’s a million dollars in here. Take it. Just don’t make a scene in front of Layla for now.”

Back then, to maintain his poor-man act, my father never transferred more than a thousand dollars to my mother at a time.

Out of the blue, he was suddenly able to send her a million dollars without blinking.

My mother looked at the bank card and scoffed. “Rowan, you’ve been lying to me for ten years, and all I get is a million dollars?

“That’s not what the money’s for. Zoe is about to start elementary school. Haven’t you always wanted to buy a house with a big backyard?

“I’ll figure out the housing situation. But now’s not a good time. Layla’s been watching my every move lately.”

She threw the bank card back at him. “Just leave. Don’t come back.”

“Aileen, calm down. I had my reasons...”

I stood up and shoved my father.

“Get out now. Stop bothering my mom!”

My father was stunned. He demanded my mother, “Who is she? Why is she calling you ‘Mom’?”

My mother did not bother to tell him. She simply pushed and forced him out of the house.

After everything calmed down, she stared out the window at the moonless sky.

“So, every time he lied about going abroad for some operation, he was really taking his wife and daughter on vacation?”

My eyes darkened, and I nodded.

While my mother worried whether he was doing well overseas, he had been watching the snow fall with Layla, sharing a life together.

Everyone in Harbor City’s upper-class society knew how deeply devoted my father was to Layla.

The next day, my mother was supposed to go to work, but she was informed that she had been let go.

She thought about my upcoming tuition fee for the next semester and grew anxious.

She raised her voice and said, “You can’t just fire me for no reason. I’ll sue you!”

Her boss then responded, “Suit yourself. But honestly, Mr. Xanders could fix this with one phone call. You’re just wasting your time.”

My mother had no choice but to return to the rental apartment in utter humiliation.

By then, the landlord had already thrown all her belongings out.

“I’m not renting this place to you anymore. You need to be out today.”

My heart sank.

“Layla must have found out about you. We need to get back to Amity City.”

I knew that because I had traveled back in time, the timeline had been accelerated.

On the outside, Layla did not seem to care that her husband had kept another woman on the side.

In reality, she was extremely jealous. She had been delighted to ruin my mother.

But in her youth, my mother was more stubborn than I had expected. She was not willing to give up Harbor City. She had struggled there for five years.

She checked into a cheap motel and started submitting job applications online.

Every single one was rejected.

Some people even mocked her directly. “Why not just stay as Mr. Xanders’ mistress? Why do you have to go out looking for a job?”

Layla even publicly attacked my mother online. She called my mother a homewrecker and accused her of taking one million dollars from my father.

Netizens followed and insulted her with vicious comments.

My mother fired back defiantly. She attached chat logs with my father in her post to prove that she was not the other woman.

However, those posts were soon flagged as violations and blocked from being shared.

One day, my younger self, Little Zoe, came home from kindergarten, crying.

“Nobody would play with me today. They said you stole Melody’s daddy...”

My mother held Little Zoe tightly and said, “Zoe, this is all my fault. I’m so sorry.”

After hitting one dead end after another, she finally decided to leave Harbor City.

On the way home, my mother asked me, “Did your father really have no feelings for me at all?”I had lied to my mother. In my version of the story, my father never loved her. He only used her.The truth was that his love always came too late. He only felt sorry after she was already gone. That had been true in the old timeline. It had proven itself to be true again in the new timeline. But what difference did that make?I had been given one chance to stop her before it was too late. She was still young and could make other choices. She was no longer that forty-year-old woman everyone pitied. Matchmakers even started showing up at the door.I responded, “Does it even matter whether he did or not?”Would the pain he had caused her just vanish because he loved her?My mother quietly stared out the window at the streetlights blurring past. The cab was quiet, except for Little Zoe’s soft breathing in her arms.I studied my mother’s face. Her older self in the other timeline wou

I struggled with all my might, but I was no match for a grown man’s strength. The van drove straight onto the highway. The scenery outside the windows changed from small city streets to rolling hills.Little Zoe started to cry. “Where are you going?”I pulled her into my arms. “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”My father must have realized that my mother would not budge, so he decided to go after Zoe instead. He took out a beautiful rag doll to get into Little Zoe’s good behavior. “Zoe, do you like this?”She looked at the doll and pressed herself closer to the car window.I had never liked dolls since I was little. I liked Ultraman. When she did not take it, he set the doll down on the seat and reached out to pat her head.I held her close and moved away. His hand froze in midair. It took him a while to pull it back. The car drove on for a very long time. Little Zoe began to sob. “I want Mommy...”“She’ll be here soon. Just hang on a little longer, Zoe.”“Zoe, I’m your daddy.

I instinctively shielded Little Zoe behind me and took her on a longer route home. But as soon as we walked through the door, I found that same car parked right outside our building.Standing next to the car was my father. The moment he saw me, he froze.“Zoe.”Little Zoe peeked out from behind me timidly. He gulped and crouched down. “Zoe, I’m Daddy.”Little Zoe hid behind me again.“No, you’re not. I don’t have a daddy.”I saw his body stiffen. Just then, footsteps echoed from the stairwell. My mother came down carrying a grocery basket. The moment she saw my father, her expression darkened.“How did you find this place?”He stood up. “Aileen, I’m here to take you and Zoe back.”She shoved the grocery basket into my hands and pushed me toward the entrance.“Zoe, take your sister upstairs.”As I walked away, I heard him say behind me, “I’m already dealing with the situation with Layla. Just give me some time. I’ll make this right for you.”My mother said coldly, “W

The weather in Amity City was much better than in Harbor City.As soon as we got out of the car, I saw my grandparents, whom I had never met before. They looked at me with curiosity. My mother did not know how to explain my identity at that moment.I stepped forward and greeted them with a hug.The two elderly people were taken aback. Their eyes darted back and forth between my mother and myself. My mother said softly, “She’s a friend’s daughter. She’ll be staying with us for a little while.”Grandma did not ask further questions. She simply touched my head with a tender expression and said, “She looks just like you did when you were little.”My mother first took Little Zoe to the hospital for a checkup. The results were unexpected. The doctor said all her vitals were normal. She had also recovered from her cold.My mother frowned and turned to me. “What actually happened back then? Did they not draw any blood? Did they just give you a fever shot?”I shook my head and said I

Before Layla could finish speaking, Rowan had already broken free from the firefighters holding him back and charged into the still-smoking ruins.“Mr. Xanders!”“Sir, you can’t go in!”Everyone panicked. Several firefighters rushed in after him.Layla stood frozen in place as her face turned pale. For some reason, a strange, uneasy feeling crept up on her.Rowan was not supposed to act like that.He was supposed to be that cold, detached man who always put profit first. He should not have rushed into a burning building for Aileen and that brat.Word began to spread within Harbor City’s upper-class society that Rowan had lost his mind.He had stopped functioning over a mistress.Rowan’s grandfather, Andrew, flew into a rage. He had Rowan knocked unconscious and dragged back to the family home. When Rowan woke up, Andrew snorted coldly, “How could you throw your life away for some random woman?”Rowan did not explain himself. He did not argue either.Andrew was visibly ups

The documents in Rowan’s hands slipped. Papers were scattered all over the floor. He rushed to the building without a moment’s hesitation.Jack shouted from behind him, “Mr. Xanders! The fire is spreading fast! The fire trucks aren’t here yet. You can’t—”Before Jack could finish, Rowan had already dashed out of sight.Black smoke poured from the top of the hospital and spread across the sky.Rowan pushed against the flow of people fleeing downward.A window at the end of the hallway exploded outward. Shards of glass flew everywhere. Waves of heat rushed toward him.“Aileen—!”The sound of an explosion swallowed his voice. At the corner, a nurse crouched on the floor, coughing.“Th-There was a woman... holding a kid... they got stuck on the seventh floor...”Rowan had just reached the stairwell when a pair of hands grabbed him tightly.“Sir, the upper floors are sealed off. You can’t go up there!”It was the hospital’s head of security.“Move! My daughter’s up there!”Ro
