Chapter 37: Phoenix

I take every bit of love that my mate is giving me and return it with just as much passion. At first Emmi fought me, but then she realized that he needs this. He needs to feel like he can save us.

I’ve shared with her what happens in nearly every lifetime, but I won’t share it with him. I don't want him to know that my mates have always tried to save me and that is how I end up dying. By trying to save me, they put themselves in harm’s way and I give my life to save theirs. Sometimes it works and I can save them, sometimes it doesn’t. But every time I’ve met my mate before the battle, it’s been because they gave their life for me that I ended up giving my life for them.

The other thing that I won’t remind Ajax of is that most of my mates are dragons. Since the dawn of the dragons, I’ve been mated to them. They are the only creatures strong enough, magical enough, to be mated to me.

So, I open myself to his love, to his need, and to his desperation that I not give up on him, on us.

I do

I'm not sure if anyone was wondering what happened to this little group, but here they are.

that's super interesting, I wonder what Phoenix will say about it. Also, Inko has another life right now. So, who knows. Fantastic!

What are the odds? What are the fucking odds that my son gets his second chance at life and on the very next day, the assholes who captured him and tortured him are here? It’s too fucking coincidental and I don't like it.‘Peace, my dragon,’ my mate says, soothing the fury that’s rising inside of me. I can feel her walking this way, probably in response to the anger bubbling inside me. ‘Let’s see what they have to say for themselves.’“You have a lot of fucking nerve coming here after what you did,” Cedric growls. For once, he and I are in perfect harmony.“I won’t let you kill him. You’ll have to go through me,” the earth dragon hybrid says, moving to stand in front of the fire dragon hybrid.“You may carry my DNA, but you’re still part human. I, however, am all dragon. It would take nothing for me to destroy you after what you did to my son,” I snarl.“Look,” the man, the rider, says, holding up his hands. “We didn’t know what they were going to do. We didn’t understand, and we didn’

I’ve never heard a woman giving birth before. After listening to Iris, I’m not sure I want to ever have a child, not that I’ll be given that opportunity. According to Phoenix, I won’t live that long. If it means saving Ajax, I’m okay with that. And now, hearing this, I’m almost glad that having a child isn’t possible. It sounds awful. When we returned to the Academy and the other dragons flew up to meet Gideoni, Fordin, and Iris, Ajax had ducked away quickly. Phoenix’s mark on his chest is too pronounced and he needed to hide it quickly. He flew straight to his room where he let me off then shifted and entered through his window behind me. He had hurriedly put on his clothes, and we’d raced back just in time to see the dragon, Fordin, land.Phoenix says that Gideoni is telling the truth and through her, I can feel that she’s right, but no one seems to remember that I was part of the group that was held hostage by these men and Iris as well. Granted, I wasn’t in the harem of girls who w

After finding Cedric and Merethyl and telling them what Ishir told me, I let them figure things out. I don’t want to take Emmi back there to face the people who held her captive.“Let’s go check on the status of our house,” I say to her. It’s been several weeks since Cedric’s pack members began building it. I have to admit, they are pretty incredible when it comes to building our homes and packhouses around the Academy lands. The elvish castle has taken the longest because the elves prefer that their home be made of stone and natural rock. Being part earth dragon, I understand why. The feel of something strong and natural surrounding you makes the magic inside you hum. Wood is okay, but it doesn’t feel the same. However, for our home, it doesn’t matter. Emmi and Phoenix make my body hum more than any element from the earth ever could. As long as I have them, I don’t care what our home is built with, so we opted for wood which makes it faster to build than if we'd used stone.“Wow, it’s

In the end, there were only five hybrids who were adults and could act as peers to Gideoni, Iris, and Fordin. Ajax is old enough but because of his relationship with Emmi who was held captive, Merethyl and King Yhendorn said he couldn’t be impartial. Tesha, Keagan, Kano, Valko, and myself were the ones who were selected to be the jury of their peers.Enya, Aspen, Naida, and Drakon weren’t happy about not being part of the group, but they understood. None of them are yet eighteen, and I wouldn't wish this on anyone. However, they did petition to sit in on the proceedings and Everett and Kaylani agreed to allow it.A week after the others arrived, we held court. We followed the elvish ways rather than the human ways, although they are very similar. Each individual stands before us separately and pleads their case. The five of us decide their fate, three out of five is all that’s needed for a final decision. While Gideoni and Iris didn’t participate in collecting, raping, or injecting the

After the new hybrids arrived, everything went back to normal. Well, almost. They put the three of them on trial which lasted nearly a week and Phoenix caught the scent of magic again.Thankfully, we were with Ajax and he was able to keep her calm. Rather than showing our hand that we’d found it and risk having the witches try again, we’d told the elementals. It’s difficult because no one but Phoenix, and therefore, me, can sense the magical energy. The elementals said they could probably feel it if they could get closer to it, but no one wants to risk angering Ancalagon or Eliane. However, the opportunity presented itself to Zephyr later in the week. She was spending time with Iniko who apparently still thinks of the hatching grounds as his home. He had waddled right up to Ancalagon and everyone had held their breath. However, both he and Eliane had accepted him and then allowed Zephyr to come get him before the hot ground burned his paws. He started going over there every day, so Zep

**Trigger Warning: Sexual ViolenceI’ve lost everything! Those fucking dragons have taken everything from me, my life, my friends, and my pride. I don’t mean pride in myself. Now that I’m part lion, I feel the need to have an actual pride of women to feast on any time the urge strikes me, which is all the fucking time. I know the others used to get annoyed that I killed so many and I was always looking for more, but it’s not my fault that I lose control like that. It feels so fucking good to be king, to be able to empty myself inside MY lionesses, that I tend to shift while I’m still inside them.It probably wouldn’t be as bad if I wasn’t also part earth dragon. But the two don’t meld well, so when I shift, my cock is fucking huge. And, well, most women can’t handle the size and while I’m blissed out on my fucking incredible orgasm, I’ve split more than one woman in half.Still, it isn’t my fault. I didn’t ask to be like this. I didn’t ask to be part dragon and part lion. But it has ma

Zephyr and Avani were able to convince Ancalagon and Eliane to move their clutch once the eggs hatch. Since there’s so much excitement about having this many baby dragons around, nearly everyone pitches in to help set up an area where the babies can live and where we can secretly make sure that they are safe.Classes resumed, but around the classes Emmi and I helped clear out the space for the dragon hatchlings, we helped to monitor the portal, we checked on the status of our house, and I continued to work with Emmi and Phoenix on their connection.I’ll admit that I use what works and what seems to work is me. When we’re together, that seems to be when Emmi and Phoenix connect the most.“Start with your fingers,” I say. She’s sitting in front of me again, but this time, we’re at our mountain. It’s been a long time since we were able to come out here but I wanted privacy to work with Emmi on connecting with Phoenix today.I kiss the side of her neck, moving her hair out of the way and n

Watching dragon eggs hatch over several hours should have gotten boring, but it didn’t, not for any of us. The entire school watched as eggs began to rock, then chip, then little baby dragons would fall out of their shells to be greeted by their parents. The green eggs, the earth dragons, came first. Then fire, followed by air and water. The last one was the single golden egg.“Why is that one gold?” I ask Ajax, but it’s Phoenix who answers.“She will be the Queen of the Dragons.”When Ajax tells me he doesn’t know, I tell him in our mind link what Phoenix said.He turns and looks at me and I shrug. “That’s what she said.”When she hatches, daintily falling out of her shell, I knew Phoenix was right. Unlike her brothers and sisters, the queen has multi-colored scales, just like Eliane. She has all four elements.Once they were born, I was surprised that Ancalagon and Eliane weren’t as fiercely protective of them. It was almost as if their need to protect diminished the moment the babie

I woke to an empty bed. Not just empty, the bed where Emmi should have been laying was cold. Terror ripped through me. I’ve lost one mate. I won’t survive losing another.I raced around the house, calling her name, yelling for her. When she wasn’t there, I’d raced outside, wondering if somehow the witches had come back, if they’d found Emmi and planned to punish her because of Phoenix.I was on my way to wake Cal, to beg him to help me find her, when I heard her call my name.Relief swept through me and I rushed through the forested area to where I’d heard her voice, only to see her standing in the middle of the old medical center engulfed in flames. Phoenix’s flames.“Emmi, are you okay?” I ask, looking her over quickly.“I’m fine, Ajax. What does it mean?” she asks me, looking at the flames on her body. For the first time, she doesn't look afraid. She seems excited to be engulfed in flames.I have no idea, but there’s something else that doesn’t make sense to me as I look her over.

Life slowly started getting back to normal. After Kenna forced me to start getting up and interacting again, I realized how much had truly happened while I’d been mourning the loss of Phoenix. The entire Academy was in a state of mourning. After everything that happened with Phoenix and the hatchlings, I felt a special bond to them. I started going to see them the day after Kenna dragged me out of bed. Raina was thrilled to see me, nuzzling me with her snout. I learned the names of the other four dragons that were there as well, Gemma, Blaze, Skye, and Azure; earth, fire, air, and water. All dragons seemed to be named after their element. Even the hybrids, like Ajax, chose names that relate back to their element.I stay close to Ajax and he seems to feel the same need to be near me. Our grief is still overwhelming, but we’re finding our way out of it together. I didn’t realize how much I’d miss Phoenix if she were gone, but I do.There’s a hollowness inside of me, a vacancy that I kno

It took me a while to realize that the chaos in my mind wasn’t me, but Zephyr. I could hear voices, but I couldn’t tell if they were real or the ones in her mind. Until I heard Kaylani. Her voice was clear and gave me the clarity that I needed to realize that Zephyr’s demons have returned while I’ve been unconscious.“Where is she, Kaylani?”“She was going to look after Ancalagon’s hatchlings while he’s here.”“How long have I been out?” I ask, sitting up.“Three days. You need to stay there,” she says, turning her head to the doorway. “EVERETT!”“Zephyr needs me. You said so yourself,” I grunt. My head is spinning and I feel like shit. “What happened?”“What do you remember?” Everett asks, walking in and lifting my face to look at me. He flashes a light in my eyes that makes my head pound worse.I snarl and Everett goes still, but so do the voices in Zephyr’s head which brings the pounding in my head down to a manageable level.I hear Zephyr bellow from somewhere outside. “I wasn’t s

Three Days LaterThere is so much pain, so much loss. I’m overwhelmed by it, but I have to keep going. The students here, those who are left, are depending on me.Yhendorn, Kenna, Merethyl, and Avani have taken all of the dead elves back to their troupes for a proper burial. Cedric and Tana have taken the dead wolves back to their packs to be burned so their ashes can return to the Moon Goddess’ realm.Tonight, the dragons and hybrids will lay Sena and Dion to rest. They hadn’t been with us long enough to learn how to fight and use their elements and they had been the casualties on the dragon and hybrid side of this war.I walk to the nursery, checking on the young. There are so many of them and they are all frightened, especially since their parents have been gone so much lately.Aithne, Ehrendil, and Daijaro are struggling the most. All of them are under three. Their dominant gene isn’t dragon, which makes their development slower. Tana, Cedric, Merethyl, and Avani have spent every

As soon as we had the coordinates from the warlock, we raced to find Phoenix and the hatchlings. I’m not as large as Ancalagon or even Avani, but my mate is there and I pushed my dragon to speeds I’ve never achieved before.Ancalagon arrived first, slamming into a wall of magic. Avani hit it too, but I was able to pull up before I crashed into the invisible wall. Tana and Kenna both stopped and when Ancalagon roared his fury, we all started using our elements to attack the wall of magic. While Avani and I made the earth rumble, Tana and Kenna blew their fire at the wall. Ancalagon began dropping tornados, pulling water from the ground and splashing it up to where Tana and Kenna are heating the wall. When the first cracks start to form, Ancalagon yells for all of us to get back. We do and Ancalagon stands in front of the wall, then spins, slamming his giant tail against it. The wall explodes, shattering around us.We all shift then race inside. I lift my nose, trying to find my mate’s

I knew Emmi wasn’t ready for my power, but we couldn’t wait any longer. Her fear had flooded through the bond between us, then burned off with my fire. There is no room for fear now. The witches are here and it’s why I am here. While the others were fighting, I’d been protecting the babies. Each time one got sucked into the tunnel, I would fight to pull them back out. But there were a lot of witches trying to get to the babies and I knew I hadn’t pulled them all back. When I saw the powerful witch who had been fighting with Zephyr take off running, I knew she was going to close the portal. I had screamed my anger and gone after her, burning through the remains of the tunnel so the dragons could get to the witches that I hadn’t gotten to yet.I could hear the screams of pain and fury all around me, feel the pain of the others as they fought to protect the hatchlings and each other. This Academy, this place, has become a home to many of these dragons and hybrids who had no where else to

“FENIAN!” I say, rushing a still broken Ishir into the medical center. He pokes his head out of a room, the room I’m assuming has Eliane, then rushes to me.“Oh shit!” he says.“Exactly. Everett says to run a full body xray on him. We need to know which of his organs were punctured and I need to know if he’s stable enough for me to go help others.”He turns, waving me to follow him. “Have you seen Tesha?” he asks.“No, but it’s chaos out there.”He nods.“Can’t you speak to her through your bond?”“It’s shut down. I’m trying not to worry about what that means ...” he says, swallowing hard.“Tesha is a strong woman. She’ll be okay. When I go back out, I’ll look for her. How is Naida?”“It’s going to be a while before she can fly again. If she were a mature dragon, maybe, but as a hybrid ...” he shakes his head. “I need Doc Everett to look at her.”“I’m not sure who he was going to help next, but you can expect to have more like these two coming in. Both of my parents seem to know, Ajax seems to know, the other elementals seems to know, and no one thought it was a good idea to let ME know? The thing I thought was the danger, the Phoenix, wasn’t, and I wasted valuable time focusing on her when I should have been focusing on the real danger, these fucking witches. They’re after my kids and my mate!I’d heard my mother’s cry for Iniko. I’d hear Eliane call out to me, but it was her panicked scream that had finally cut through my anger. Then, her quiet voice in my head, calling me to her that sent a wave of icy fear rushing through me.When I’d rushed back, I’d found her unconscious, buried under a tree. By then, the witches and warlocks had started appearing out of thin air. I couldn’t spare much time for them as I bellowed for Everett.I lifted the tree off my mate and shifted. “No, no, no! Eliane! CedricI was teaching a class on Lycan and werewolf history when I heard both my mate and my daughter bugle an angry warning. Fire dragons are passionate creatures, but they don’t bugle frivolous warnings. Ever. Since both my girls bugled at nearly the same time, I knew something was very wrong.‘TANA!’ I yelled in the mind link as I sprinted out of class.‘Phoenix rose! Something’s wrong but I can’t tell what it is. The dragons are about to attack her,” she says.I shift as I run out of my classroom. I see Phoenix's fiery figure in the sky. I’m nowhere close to her but I can already feel the heat of her anger. As I race toward the chaos, Phoenix shoots a flame aimed at nothing that I can see. I’ve almost reached them when Zephyr screams for Iniko and races to the nesting grounds. At the same moment, I catch a scent and a vicious snarl erupts from my gut.‘Cedric?’ Tana’s concerned voice floats into my head.‘Banari is here,’ I snarl back. I remember the scent from when we rescued Inik
