Chapter 9

Autor: Walnut Lover
The thick doors cut her cries off, and River’s gaze focused again on Nina.

When Violet rushed back to the operating theater, Dr. Stern looked at her regretfully. “I’m sorry. We did our best.”

Violet’s knees buckled, and she staggered a few steps. Her mother could not handle the news. She was so distressed that she fainted.

“Mom!”

…

Back in the VIP ward, Dr. Luther put away his equipment and said, “Miss Lane just suffered a bit of a scare and is alright. By the way, I heard from your assistant that I have an emergency surgery scheduled. What—”

Before he finished speaking, Nina frowned. “But I still feel short of breath. I don’t feel good…”

River comforted her. “Dr. Luther, take care of Nina first. As for the surgery, we have plenty of doctors here. The patient can just have another lead surgeon.”

Nina ducked her head, and her eyes flashed with the satisfaction of someone who had just gotten her way.

…

Violet’s mother only woke up the next day. While enduring her grief, Violet worked together with her mother to arrange for her father’s funeral.

At the same time, the Marsh family sent news that the divorce was completed, and she could come back to get the divorce certificate.

…

Back at the Marsh family’s mansion, Violet put her meager belongings into her suitcase. Just as she was about to step out of the master bedroom, River spoke up behind her.

He stood in place with a frown. There was a barely noticeable hint of puzzlement in his eyes. “Where are you going with your suitcase?”

Violet did not turn around and did not stop. She was not even hesitating.

As she stared at the sunlight outside, she whispered, “I’m leaving, and I’m never coming back.”

River did not hear her clearly, but when he saw her determined stance, a strong wave of unease rose in him.

When he remembered how depressed she had been because of the Marsh family’s rules, he thought she was overwhelmed by all the negative emotions weighing on her. It would be better for her to go out for a bit and relax. His tense expression softened.

He said, “Don’t stay out for more than three days. Come back on time.”

She ignored him and walked out of the Marsh family to get into the cab waiting outside. Then, she left.

When the airplane shot through the clouds, she knew that the city she had once loved, suffered in, and lived in no longer had anything to do with her.

Yet, he was willing to set aside all his dignity. No matter how many times he was rejected or humiliated, he never grew frustrated. The neighbors saw it and knew that he was the one who had betrayed Violet, so they all ganged up on him. “Do you really think that you can do whatever you want just because you have money? You abused the girl we watched grow up! You have no chance with her anymore!”“Violet’s a good girl, and you hurt her so badly! I can’t believe you’d have the nerve to show up here!”“Get lost! With regret as well as a clumsy attempt to win her favor, he apologized to her. “Anna, I was wrong. I betrayed Violet and your family.”“Don’t talk to me like we’re friends!”Anna’s anger erupted. Every word that followed was filled with sympathy for Violet and fury toward River.“My family may not be as rich or powerful as yours, but I raised my daughter like a princess!“Yet during the five years she was married to you, she suffered, endured so much pain, and never complained! How could you treat her like that?!“When Nina crashed into my husband and left him on the brink of death, you didn’t even apologize. She grabbed his sleeve and started begging for mercy. “River, you promised me that you’d help me settle everything!
