Chapter 2

Author: Maroon Cypress
"I heard that Connor was here too, so I had to come over and say hello," Louis Hayes said.

He smiled at me, his face pale. "Hi, Connor. Don't misunderstand. I'm here this time as Ms. Chandler's assistant—"

"Why are you explaining anything to him?" Abigail asked.

She drew him behind her and looked at me coldly. "I don't have an official relationship with him yet. Your health matters most. Everything else can wait."

Abigail constantly accused me of lacking propriety, yet when it came to Louis, everything suddenly became negotiable.

At the auction, Abigail spent lavishly on three pieces of jewelry, leaving Louis both surprised and delighted. I, however, didn't find anything to my liking even by the end.

Just as I was about to leave, the auctioneer smiled cryptically and revealed an antique cufflink. Anyone familiar with antiques could tell at a glance that it was priceless. For the first time, I sat up straighter.

But before the auctioneer could introduce it, Abigail raised her paddle. "100 million."

He replied, "Ms. Chandler, I'm sorry—"

"In Lothriel dollars," Abigail added.

I looked over. Abigail shot me a cold glance, while Louis looked at her with unmistakable affection.

"I apologize, Ms. Chandler," the auctioneer said.

He then smiled at me. "This belongs to Mr. Foster."

"But we were clearly the first to bid!" Louis protested.

The auctioneer replied, "This was prepared by Mr. Foster Senior and is not for sale. He said that Mr. Foster has discerning taste, so if nothing earlier appealed to him, this should barely suffice."

A staff member respectfully presented the cufflink to me. He bowed and said, "We wish Mr. Foster an early happy birthday."

Louis' complexion turned even paler.

Abigail clasped his slender fingers reassuringly, but her eyes flared with anger. "Connor, if you keep harassing Louis like this, I'll refuse to marry you!"

That threat had carried weight in my previous life, but now it meant absolutely nothing to me.

A few days after returning to Jorvale from Lothriel, I was invited to attend a birthday dinner on Dad's behalf for one of his business partners.

After delivering the gift and heading for food, I saw Abigail preparing a cup of herbal medicine for Louis. She was speaking to him, her serious expression softening with a hint of indulgence. He wrapped his arms around her.

When the people nearby noticed me, their faces lit up with excitement, clearly eager for some juicy drama.

Abigail saw me as well, yet she acted as if she hadn't. Seeing Louis grimace after finishing the bitter drink, she bit into a grape and rose onto her toes to lean toward him. Louis hurriedly took it from her lips, his gaze lingering on her tenderly.

Abigail straightened up and cast me a seemingly casual glance. Everyone turned to look at me.

I sneered inwardly. Did she really think that I was still the man who lost his temper at the slightest provocation and feared upsetting her if I felt hurt?

I simply lowered my gaze and ate, paying them no attention at all.

Abigail paused briefly, then narrowed her eyes. "So, you finally understand that I like men who are broad-minded. Not bad."

She pulled a small box from her purse, opened it, and asked Louis, "Does it look nice?"

"Oh, that's the matching ring the Chandler family prepared to give Connor on his birthday!" someone said.

"The diamond is stunning," Louis said.

His eyes brightened, then dimmed as he forced a smile. "Ms. Chandler, you're really good to Connor."

"If you like it, then it's yours," Abigail said.

She ignored the shocked looks around her and slid the ring onto Louis' ring finger.

Louis put on a show of hesitation. "Isn't this a bit inappropriate? After all, it's the Chandler family's gift for Connor—"

"It's just a ring. If he wants it, I'll just buy him another one," Abigail replied.

She shot me a cold glance and summoned a waiter. "Go order a ring on Amazon and have it delivered. Make it fast, or Mr. Foster might be unhappy."

Soft snickers rose from the people around me.

"She seems to be livestreaming too!" someone shouted. The scene instantly descended into chaos. With a grim expression, I opened the livestream and saw a face that was emaciated, consumed by madness. It was Abigail."Get Connor here!" she screamed at the camera. "If I don't see him within ten minutes, I'll kill myself at the headquarters of Foster Group!"Suddenly, my phone was taken from my hand by Grace. She gently smoothed the crease between my brows and said, "Don't worry. Let me take care of something this trivial."I held her hand and shook my head. "This started with me, so I should be the one to end it. Let me handle this."When I appeared before Abigail, her face was soaked with tears, and her eyes were bloodshot."Connor, I have lost everything! This is all because of you!" she shouted. She ripped open her clothes, revealing a row of explosives strapped around her waist. "Make Grace leave you and marry me! Otherwise, I will detonate this right here!"She laughed, her

"You've caused so much trouble for Abby and the Chandler family. We've done everything we could!" Mr. Chandler said.It seemed that Louis' disappearance in my previous life was orchestrated by Mr. Chandler. No matter how Mr. Chandler and Louis argued, Abigail remained completely unmoved. She stared at me relentlessly and shouted, "Connor, I was wrong! Can you give me another—"A piercing police siren cut her off."If you have anything to say, say it to the police. We're in a hurry to get married," Grace said. She glanced at Abigail with utter disdain. "You're the heiress of the Chandler family. Don't you know how to behave with any dignity?"Abigail was forced into the police car, yet her gaze remained stubbornly fixed on me until Grace and I walked away hand in hand.Fortunately, Grace had prepared in advance, and the police arrived just in time to prevent any delay to our wedding. At the estate, where lilies of the valley swayed gently, Grace and I solemnly pledged our lives

Abigail scratched Louis until his face was bloody, and the two of them were finally escorted away after the police arrived. In the middle of the night, Abigail came back again and sat outside the gate until morning. The butler said, "Mr. Foster, there's no need for you to worry. Mr. Foster Senior and the Sutton family both assigned people to keep watch on her. Mr. Foster Senior also said he would cut off all dealings with Chandler Group."I replied without much interest, "Got it."Then I turned my gaze to Grace on the screen. "Why did you inspect the venue by yourself? Were you tired?"Her eyes gleamed with warmth as she smiled. "I was a little tired, but being able to marry you truly made me so happy."My heart skipped a beat, and my fingertips unconsciously traced the outline of her face on the screen. "Grace.""What's wrong?" she asked."I missed you. Wait for me. I'm coming to you," I answered.…Abigail didn't appear again for a long time, likely because that day had brok

That day, I woke up late and was having brunch when the butler said, "Mr. Hayes is outside. He says he's here to visit Mr. Foster Senior."I let out a cold laugh and walked to the entrance, where I saw Louis. He was arguing fiercely with the security guard at the entrance, his face red with anger. "How dare you stop me? Mr. Foster Senior treats me like his own son!"I strolled over unhurriedly. "Who do you think you are? No matter how bad my dad's memory gets, he would never confuse his son with someone he's sponsoring."At the word "sponsoring", Louis' expression shifted repeatedly. He forced a smile. "Connor, is Mr. Foster Senior here? I want to talk to him and see if there is a chance for me to return to Foster Group."I scoffed. "Didn't you resign on your own to become Abigail's assistant?"Hearing that, Louis' face drained of color.I raised an eyebrow. He was the man Abigail had sworn was her true love in my previous life. It had only been a month, and he was already strug

"I won't believe it unless you show me the video as evidence!" Abigail said through clenched teeth.Dad said nothing more. He raised his hand to call the bodyguards, but I stopped him. "Since the Chandler family has made a request, we should at least show them some courtesy."The video was played in front of everyone.Abigail stared at the screen without blinking. When she saw that I answered "Grace Sutton" without hesitation the moment Dad finished speaking, her pupils visibly contracted.Grace froze beside me for a moment, then tightened her grip on my hand."Connor Foster, you'd better stop right now!" Abigail shouted.I looked at her in confusion. Her hair was disheveled, and her makeup smeared. She lunged at me frantically, trying to grab my arm. She said, "Even if you're trying to make me jealous, there should be limits. There's no need to drag marriage into this out of spite. If you keep this up, there will be no turning back!"Grace pulled me behind her, her expressio

Grace lifted her head abruptly, eyes wide with surprise.A deafening crash rang out as something shattered."That's impossible!" Abigail cried out.Dad frowned and asked, "Ms. Chandler, do you have any objections to the decision made by the Foster family?"He exuded overwhelming authority. Abigail lowered her head, yet she continued muttering under her breath. "How could that be? How could Connor not choose me?"Dad's voice had lost all trace of warmth. "Why would he have to choose you? You've trampled on his dignity again and again."Did you really think that I wouldn't notice just because I wasn't there? I didn't intervene only because I knew Connor liked you. Don't be so overconfident, Ms. Chandler."Abigail kept repeating "impossible" in a near-hysterical state.Dad waved his hand and had her dragged out of the room.Once everyone left, Dad called me over. "Connor, have you truly made up your mind? Once this is announced publicly, there will be no turning back."I nodded
