Chapter 3

Author: Maroon Cypress
I chewed my food mechanically, my eyes devoid of emotion.

Abigail was someone I had once chased relentlessly, offering my sincere devotion and begging for her love, yet she treated me like something disposable.

Once, when I said I missed her, she gave me an address. But when I rushed there in wild excitement, all I saw was a crowd celebrating their win from a bet.

When I called her, she brushed it off and said, "I was just mentioning a place. I never said that I'd be there."

She had always been like this, trampling on my feelings and self-respect at every turn without mercy. I was truly exhausted.

The waiter looked at me helplessly. I simply waved my hand and said, "It's fine. You can go back to work."

Seeing how calm and unmoved I was, Abigail's brows furrowed. She repeated her old tricks and leaned close to Louis, every movement dripping with intimacy.

Cheers and teasing noises continued to rise from those around them.

After Abigail fed the champagne to Louis from her lips for the third time and shot me a provocative look, she finally saw me push my chair back and walk away.

She shoved Louis aside, caught up to me in a few strides, and grabbed me as she mocked, "Can't you handle it anymore? I would never want such a petty man as my husband."

I shook her off and asked, "Abigail, what gives you the confidence to think that I would definitely choose you?"

Abigail reacted as if she had heard the greatest joke. "Who else could it be? The Waller family just suffered a catastrophic investment failure. The Preston family's daughter is chronically ill. As for the Sutton family—"

Her lips curved into a cruel smile. "Their daughter is just there to fill the numbers. She's not even worth mentioning. Connor Foster, you have no other option but me."

Everything would be clear on my birthday. I had no interest in continuing to be the subject of their gossip.

Just as I was about to get into the car and head home, Louis ran out.

"Connor!" he shouted.

Since Dad and Abigail weren't around, he didn't bother pretending anymore. "Don't think that marrying Abby means you'll have her. The title's not important. The one who sleeps beside her is her real husband."

He spoke crudely, while I merely touched the antique cufflink and smiled faintly. "And yet, isn't that 'unimportant' title exactly what you want the most?"

Louis' smile froze, and he was so furious he nearly lost his footing. He knew exactly what I was saying.

Dad had sponsored him since elementary school and even arranged for him to work at Foster Group after graduation. He thought that he was opening the door to a new life for himself, but it turned out that he had unlocked a box of desire instead.

The reason he disappeared in my previous life had always remained a mystery. This time, I decided to stay out of it and watch how this pair of lovebirds would end up.

Dad told me that once the marriage alliance was officially announced, the engagement banquet would be held soon, so I needed to start preparing.

I ran into Louis at the designer's studio. Abigail had been having him dressed head to toe in luxury lately. At first glance, he really did look like the heir of a wealthy family.

He was on a video call with Abigail. When he saw me, he smiled and said to her, "Abby, I just went to see Mr. Foster Senior. He mentioned that Connor went to pick out his engagement outfit, and I happened to run into him right away."

Abigail saw me as well, and her smile faded instantly. "Connor, don't waste your effort. No matter how expensive you dress, you won't compare to a single strand of Louie's hair in my eyes."

Louis pretended to scold her. "Stop it, don't embarrass Connor."

He spread his arms and turned in front of me. "Connor, do you think this outfit looks good? Abby insisted on giving it to me. It's just a bit tight, so she told me to come adjust the size."

I hadn't intended to pay him any attention, but when I took in the blue suit he was wearing, I was shaken to my core. "How do you have this suit?"

I looked at Abigail on the screen. "Did you give it to him?"

"She seems to be livestreaming too!" someone shouted. The scene instantly descended into chaos. With a grim expression, I opened the livestream and saw a face that was emaciated, consumed by madness. It was Abigail."Get Connor here!" she screamed at the camera. "If I don't see him within ten minutes, I'll kill myself at the headquarters of Foster Group!"Suddenly, my phone was taken from my hand by Grace. She gently smoothed the crease between my brows and said, "Don't worry. Let me take care of something this trivial."I held her hand and shook my head. "This started with me, so I should be the one to end it. Let me handle this."When I appeared before Abigail, her face was soaked with tears, and her eyes were bloodshot."Connor, I have lost everything! This is all because of you!" she shouted. She ripped open her clothes, revealing a row of explosives strapped around her waist. "Make Grace leave you and marry me! Otherwise, I will detonate this right here!"She laughed, her

"You've caused so much trouble for Abby and the Chandler family. We've done everything we could!" Mr. Chandler said.It seemed that Louis' disappearance in my previous life was orchestrated by Mr. Chandler. No matter how Mr. Chandler and Louis argued, Abigail remained completely unmoved. She stared at me relentlessly and shouted, "Connor, I was wrong! Can you give me another—"A piercing police siren cut her off."If you have anything to say, say it to the police. We're in a hurry to get married," Grace said. She glanced at Abigail with utter disdain. "You're the heiress of the Chandler family. Don't you know how to behave with any dignity?"Abigail was forced into the police car, yet her gaze remained stubbornly fixed on me until Grace and I walked away hand in hand.Fortunately, Grace had prepared in advance, and the police arrived just in time to prevent any delay to our wedding. At the estate, where lilies of the valley swayed gently, Grace and I solemnly pledged our lives

Abigail scratched Louis until his face was bloody, and the two of them were finally escorted away after the police arrived. In the middle of the night, Abigail came back again and sat outside the gate until morning. The butler said, "Mr. Foster, there's no need for you to worry. Mr. Foster Senior and the Sutton family both assigned people to keep watch on her. Mr. Foster Senior also said he would cut off all dealings with Chandler Group."I replied without much interest, "Got it."Then I turned my gaze to Grace on the screen. "Why did you inspect the venue by yourself? Were you tired?"Her eyes gleamed with warmth as she smiled. "I was a little tired, but being able to marry you truly made me so happy."My heart skipped a beat, and my fingertips unconsciously traced the outline of her face on the screen. "Grace.""What's wrong?" she asked."I missed you. Wait for me. I'm coming to you," I answered.…Abigail didn't appear again for a long time, likely because that day had brok

That day, I woke up late and was having brunch when the butler said, "Mr. Hayes is outside. He says he's here to visit Mr. Foster Senior."I let out a cold laugh and walked to the entrance, where I saw Louis. He was arguing fiercely with the security guard at the entrance, his face red with anger. "How dare you stop me? Mr. Foster Senior treats me like his own son!"I strolled over unhurriedly. "Who do you think you are? No matter how bad my dad's memory gets, he would never confuse his son with someone he's sponsoring."At the word "sponsoring", Louis' expression shifted repeatedly. He forced a smile. "Connor, is Mr. Foster Senior here? I want to talk to him and see if there is a chance for me to return to Foster Group."I scoffed. "Didn't you resign on your own to become Abigail's assistant?"Hearing that, Louis' face drained of color.I raised an eyebrow. He was the man Abigail had sworn was her true love in my previous life. It had only been a month, and he was already strug

"I won't believe it unless you show me the video as evidence!" Abigail said through clenched teeth.Dad said nothing more. He raised his hand to call the bodyguards, but I stopped him. "Since the Chandler family has made a request, we should at least show them some courtesy."The video was played in front of everyone.Abigail stared at the screen without blinking. When she saw that I answered "Grace Sutton" without hesitation the moment Dad finished speaking, her pupils visibly contracted.Grace froze beside me for a moment, then tightened her grip on my hand."Connor Foster, you'd better stop right now!" Abigail shouted.I looked at her in confusion. Her hair was disheveled, and her makeup smeared. She lunged at me frantically, trying to grab my arm. She said, "Even if you're trying to make me jealous, there should be limits. There's no need to drag marriage into this out of spite. If you keep this up, there will be no turning back!"Grace pulled me behind her, her expressio

Grace lifted her head abruptly, eyes wide with surprise.A deafening crash rang out as something shattered."That's impossible!" Abigail cried out.Dad frowned and asked, "Ms. Chandler, do you have any objections to the decision made by the Foster family?"He exuded overwhelming authority. Abigail lowered her head, yet she continued muttering under her breath. "How could that be? How could Connor not choose me?"Dad's voice had lost all trace of warmth. "Why would he have to choose you? You've trampled on his dignity again and again."Did you really think that I wouldn't notice just because I wasn't there? I didn't intervene only because I knew Connor liked you. Don't be so overconfident, Ms. Chandler."Abigail kept repeating "impossible" in a near-hysterical state.Dad waved his hand and had her dragged out of the room.Once everyone left, Dad called me over. "Connor, have you truly made up your mind? Once this is announced publicly, there will be no turning back."I nodded
