Feel-Good Story

On Christmas Day, my dad gave me a golden apple. My roommates gasped in envy and immediately demanded I treat them to a meal. I smiled and agreed. I told them to head out first and that I'd join them shortly. When I came out of the bathroom, the dorm was empty. Sharon Everton's laptop was still glowing. I walked over to shut it down. That's when a WhatsApp group named 'Anti-Gold Digger Alliance' popped up on the screen. [No wonder she didn't come back last night. Bet she spent the whole night escorting again just to get that golden apple!] [A designer bag the day before, a golden apple today. With how many men she's serving every day, I wonder how wrecked she is down there.] [We have to hit her with a big bill today. Her money's dirty anyway. Spending it for her is basically doing a good deed!] There were four people in the dorm. Three of them were in that group chat. There was no doubt that they were talking about me. The friends I'd treated with genuine kindness all this time turned out to be ungrateful snakes.

Chapter 1
The messages in the WhatsApp group kept coming. My fingers trembled with anger as I scrolled up and read every insult they'd thrown at me.I noticed the group was created last September. The very first message was from Sharon Everton.[Did you guys notice? Our roommate, Esther Lane, got picked up by different men in different luxury cars two days in a row. Also, everything she wears is designer.][I heard even before coming to college that some girls become escorts for money. Never thought we'd have one in our own dorm.][We should stay away from her. Don't want to catch whatever she's got.]No wonder the way they looked at me when I first moved in had always felt off.Back then, I thought I was just being paranoid. To get closer to them, I'd often buy them gifts and treat them to meals. Now I realized that in their eyes, I was just a personal ATM.Right then, my phone rang.Sharon's cheerful voice came through."Esther, why aren't you here yet? We've been waiting forever!"

Under my cold stare, Mary and Celine lowered their heads. They felt too guilty to meet my eyes.Sharon snatched the laptop away. "What are you doing snooping through my computer? How rude!""If you didn't do anything shady, why would you be afraid? Weren't we right? Weren't those jewelry, bags, and that golden apple from men you'd slept with?"I told her the truth. "My dad bought them."She laughed sarcastically. "Your sugar daddy, you mean? Stop pretending. I've seen your enrollment form. Both your parents' names were blank."You're obviously an orphan!"My father was a well-known businessman in the capital. Since I was kidnapped as a child, I kept his name and my mom's name off my enrollment form for my own safety."You only see the filth in others because it's what you have inside. Even if I didn't list my parents' names, that doesn't give you the right to slander me."I demand an apology!" I exclaimed.Sharon scoffed."You're the one doing disgusting things, and you're sc

Gary glanced at me and said, "Rumors don't come out of nowhere. If you hadn't behaved inappropriately, nobody would've spread those rumors about you!"Sharon smirked beside him."Mr. Jackson, you're right. She behaved inappropriately first. She even refused to pay me back for a meal. I only exposed her because I was angry."If she pays me 4,500 bucks, I'll delete the post immediately."I argued, "They chose to eat there. Why should I pay?"Gary cut me off. "That's enough. Esther, transfer the money to Sharon right now and apologize to her."And Sharon, delete your post on the campus forum. This ends right here, right now. Nobody is allowed to bring it up again."Sharon looked at me with a victorious smile on her face. That explained why Sharon was able to see my enrollment information. They were working together.I said furiously, "Why should I apologize to her? You're a counselor. A student came to you for help, but you can't even discern right from wrong. You've failed at yo

My dad ran over and shoved the crowd aside with brute force."Back off! All of you!"He carefully helped me up from the ground. When he saw the swelling on my face, panic filled his eyes."Esther, are you okay?"I wiped the blood from the corner of my mouth. My parents had kept me sheltered ever since I was a kid. I had never suffered this kind of humiliation before. When I looked at my dad, I couldn't hide the hurt in my eyes."Dad, they hit me!"The moment I said 'Dad,' there were gasps all around. The school management staff stepped forward in confusion."Mr. Lane? This is your daughter? Why didn't we know she was a student here?"My dad helped me steady myself and looked around at the crowd."Out of hundreds of colleges in this country, why do you think I chose to donate to yours? Do you really think it's because your school is outstanding and has great professors?"It's because of my daughter. She has a kind heart. She told me there were students here struggling financia

"Esther, you misunderstood! The person we were talking about in the group wasn't you. It was my neighbor's daughter. She has the same name with a different spelling!"It's also my fault for not explaining things clearly earlier because I was upset about the dinner."And just now, I acted impulsively. I formally apologize to you right now. Please forgive me."She shot frantic looks at Mary and Celine."Mary, Celine, aren't I right? Esther's always been our best friend. There's no way we'd talk badly about her behind her back!"Caught off guard, the two quickly nodded along. "That's right! We were talking about someone else!""Esther, we know you don't like gossip, so we didn't add you to the group. We didn't expect you'd misunderstand."I looked at the three of them coldly and smirked."Best friends? Do you really think I'm a fool?"The three of you threw all my belongings out into the hallway yesterday. Have you forgotten already? Let me refresh your memory."I retrieved my p

I glanced at them. I was already tired of the noise. I spoke in a cold tone. "Do you think I'm some kind of naive saint? You stabbed me in the back, spread lies about me, and just assaulted me today. Now you think shifting the blame means I'll forgive you?"All three of you are getting those violations. Every single one!"Steve saw that I was finally speaking. He immediately barked, "Silence! Anyone who says another word will be expelled on the spot!"The three of them fell silent instantly. They seemed to be in despair.Steve turned to face me and said carefully, "Ms. Lane, since the matter has been resolved, about today's donation–"He trailed off. I knew he wanted me to convince my dad not to cancel the donation.I smiled. "Not so fast. There's one more thing the college needs to answer for."Steve straightened his back immediately. "Of course. Please, go ahead."My gaze shifted to Gary, who stood in the last row. "Yesterday, when Sharon posted those rumors about me on the c

When the video ended, every eye in the room turned toward Sharon and Gary."I thought Gary was married. Isn't this straight-up cheating?""So Sharon is the real gold digger. She's the one doing all this disgusting stuff.""She defamed someone else to cover up her own crimes. This is beyond shameless. Gary isn't a good person either. As a teacher, how could he sneak around with his own student? It's a violation of ethics!"The management staff were visibly shaken by the video. They knew that if this got out, it would be a massive scandal, and the college's reputation would be destroyed.Steve made a decision immediately. "Gary has violated professional ethics and betrayed his family. We don't need an educator like this. He is hereby dismissed."As for Sharon, her conduct was disgraceful. She seduced a teacher, spread malicious rumors about other students, and led bullying behavior. Considering all these offences, she's expelled from the college."Sharon collapsed to the ground af

"Alright, alright. I can't win an argument with you, but what happened today still scares me. Just thinking about you being pinned down and beaten like that makes me uneasy."You wanted to get into college on your own merit, and we respected that. But after what happened, you have to listen to us. You're transferring to an elite college immediately."You'll have top-tier education with top-tier security. More importantly, everyone will have similar backgrounds. No one will be jealous over petty things or try to hurt you."After everything that happened, I knew I couldn't go back to my old college anyway. Now that people knew my identity, I'd be surrounded by fake smiles and empty flattery. I didn't want to live in a world of lies.I nodded and accepted his decision. My dad nodded back. "Okay. I'll make the arrangements right away. Once you recover, you'll start at your new college."But there's one more thing. How are you going to explain this to your mom?"That made me pause.
