Elara

It had been three days since I left.

I hadn’t slept.

Not really.

The first night I pressed my back against the cold bark of a tree, hand on my belly, and stared into the dark until my eyes burned. Every sound felt like him. Every rustle of leaves, every crack of the twigs, even the restless shifting of the mare. My brain painted Kael’s silhouette behind it all.

I didn’t know what I’d do if he found me. I only knew I couldn’t go back. I refused to subject myself and my child to the treatment I had endured.

I’d expected the fear that came with running away.

What I hadn’t expected though, was the grief.

The ache in my chest when I thought of my child growing up without a father… without him… was worse than the burn in my legs, worse than the rawness of my feet from walking without proper boots, and worse than the pangs of early nausea I tried to ignore.

Kael would never know the sound of our child’s laugh. He’d never hold him or teach him to shift or lift him onto his shoulders ju

  • Run Little Mate   Chapter 37

Elara’s POVThe purple slime in the cauldron rose ominously and all a sudden, it flew out of it, darting straight for me. I could see it coming at me but for some reason I was completely frozen and couldn’t move to block it or dodge.I felt a shove at my shoulder that pushed me out of the way, making the purple slime creature bounce against the walls. It was Lucan, he had pushed me out of the way.“Thank you”, I said shakily. I had no idea what the thing they had concocted was, I couldn’t feel any sort of energy or smell anything from it, but it was clearly…alive.“Catch it”, Leah yelled, jumping across the room to seal her hand over it. True to its nature, it was slippery and escaped from her grasp, jumping over to the door and squeezing under it. Uncle Ro quickly opened the door to see that it had headed over to one of Eren’s cots in the apothecary building. As though it was looking for something, it jumped away from the empty cot and ran out of the building. My heart lurched in my

  • Run Little Mate   CHAPTER 36

Elara’s POVI could see several women gathered around in ethereal white robes that fluttered beautifully behind them. The full moon was high in the sky and bright enough to illuminate the whole forest without any assistance. The women had kindness in their eyes as they stood over a man jerking around violently, feeding a steady stream of white light into him.Magic, my mind supplied. The man suddenly froze and stopped his jerking around, and the women sighed and disappeared into thin air, all except one, who knelt beside the man and cradled him to her chest. “It’ll all be fine my love”, the woman sighed before disappearing too. The man sat up abruptly and Elara realized that the face was familiar, that was her father. The realization snapped her out of it and she took in a large gulp of air before regaining her senses.“Are you alright?! You nearly passed out for a second there”, Leah asked, concerned and leaning forward to check her pulse. “Is it so surprising that Lera isn’t fully

  • Run Little Mate   CHAPTER 35

Elara’s POV“No, that won’t be necessary. I just wanted some healing”, Selene said, her voice now sharp. I could see her glancing around the ward like there was something she was looking for. Had she found out that I was here? Even if she did, why on earth did she decide to look for me? We had never been on good terms and I had expected she would have preferred it if I was dead, or permanently missing.“People that want healing are usually more sensible. Please, go to another pack for healing, we’re closed for the day”, Leah said, her voice hard as she spoke on behalf of Lera.“No, I’ll heal her. What did you say was wrong with you again?”, Lera asked, her voice deceptively cold. Eren began to squirm in my hands, I had to keep rocking on my feet, I should have walked away instead of coming to hide in here, I just wanted the full information on why she was here directly from her instead of being told by any of the other women.“Internal injuries. It’s nice to know that one of you has g

  • Run Little Mate   CHAPTER 34

Two Years LaterElara’s POV“You should be able to carry heavy stuff in about three days, really.”, I said to the tall, gangly teenager lying on the bed in front of me. He had injured himself playing roughly with his wolf friends and had dislocated a bone. This was his third injury in the span of two weeks, I was now extremely accustomed to his face.“Thanks Ma’am”, he said, his face slightly flushed as he put on his shirt. I squinted at him before smiling. Teenagers were always so shy, I had seen more bodies than I could count at this stage in my life. Not sexually of course, sexually was just one person. But otherwise, when it came to healing, I was practically numb to what bodies looked like.“You’re welcome, just, stay out of trouble Jero”, I said gently, careful not to spike the natrual trait of rebellion the boy had. He flushed hard and slid off the bed.“I’ll be careful”, he muttered and left the ward. I knew it was a lie. I wouldn’t be surprised if I met him here again in two

  • Run Little Mate   CHAPTER 33

Elara’s POVThree days laterI was in the kitchen, chopping vegetables for Leah, Lucan and my meal for tonight, it was a very normal thing, a small respite after Lucan came back beaten and bruised by Kael’s fists and claws. Then everything tilted. Not physically. Not to anyone else. But to me? The floor slipped from under my soul. The bond seemed to tug violently at my hair and scalp and I dropped the knife, shaken. It wasn’t just sitting there like an itch anymore. It was pressing and burning all at once. I felt the thrum of it, not just like pain, but like a distant knock inside my ribcage. A weight on me that got closer with every breath I took.I went still for a long while. “Shit,” I breathed, soft and sharp.Leah turned from the stove with her brow raised. “What?”I opened my mouth and closed it again. “Nothing. I just felt a bit faint.”But it was not nothing. And I knew I’d just lied. Not to protect Leah, but to protect myself from the avalanche I could already feel gathering

  • Run Little Mate   Chapter 32

Lucan’s POVIt started with the scent that lingered.Just a whisper — it was barely there. I was sure even Kael himself didn’t know, but his wolf definitely noticed.Every fucking time I returned from the border packs, it clung to me like mist. Not Elara’s scent exactly, not her wolf’s direct signature. It was softer and lighter. Just something connected to her, her environment and her safety.Normal wolves couldn’t sense it, but someone she had bonded with before would.I was certain Kael couldn’t name it. But I saw how his jaw tightened when I walked into a room. How his eyes followed me like I was a threat. He didn’t say a word about it. Not once. Not even on the nights where it felt like he was breaking to pieces trying to search for her. But I could feel his wolf stirring beneath his skin, agitated and rabid, like a savage beast trapped in a cage too small. And the problem was, I didn’t regret helping her. Not for a single second.I’d do it again. I would do it again.Because she
