She nailed the shot. Again and again. One model, then another was called to swap in, a group shot but Lucas never left the room.

Jake approached her during a five-minute break. “You’re lucky mi amor,” he said quietly. “They love your shots. You’re back in their good graces.”

Aurelia gave a tight nod and smirks, while sipping water.

She turned back toward the viewing screen, and suddenly, Lucas was there beside her.

“Good work,” he murmured under his breath, just loud enough for her to hear.

She didn’t look up at him. “Thank you, Sir,” she replied coolly, eyes fixed forward.

He chuckled softly. “Still mad?”

“I’m trying to forget,” she said with a tight smile, "Sir?" She added, sarcastically aware that eyes might be watching.

“You left that day without saying goodbye, and I still wonder why.”

“You’re my boss, now that’s goodbye enough.”

His jaw tightened, but he didn’t respond. After a beat, he said, “Lunch. Tomorrow. You choose the place.”

“I’m busy,” she replied. “I am always busy." She wanted to add the part about being a single mother.

Lucas leaned in slightly, his voice low, like a caress. “I’ll wait for you, Aurelia.”

And then he walked away, back into the shadows of his corporate throne, leaving Aurelia to face the battle of her own emotions.

She exhaled, quietly.

This was going to be more complicated than she thought.

---

“Okay, spill it!”

Aurelia jumped slightly at the sudden voice in her ear. She turned to see Sue—her best girl, fellow model, and part-time human lie detector—grinning like a fox who’d found a henhouse full of secrets.

“What?” Aurelia asked, trying to sound innocent as she dabbed sweat off her forehead with a tissue.

Sue folded her arms and gave her a look. “Don’t ‘what’ me. You’ve been weird all morning. Extra flawless on set. Blushing between shots. And let’s not pretend I didn’t see Mr. Tall-Dark-and-CEO whispering sweet nothings in your ear.”

“I wasn’t blushing,” Aurelia muttered.

Sue raised a brow. “You were scarlet, girl. So? What's up?”

Aurelia hesitated. This was Sue—her safe space, her no-judgment zone—but this has to remain a secret. Because it is dangerous and complicated.

"What are you doing here, Sue? You were supposed to be on a yatch in Paris remember?" Aurelia queried, instead.

"Well, I changed my mind. My manager has been calling me nonstop. The tech guru we were supposed to hangout with was rude to women and you know I can't tolerate such nonsense. So I opted out last minute and here I am with you, my angel. What are you hiding?" Sue sang through the words and shouted the last part.

"Shhhh. Okay,” Aurelia whispered, pulling Sue into a quiet corner of the dressing area. “Promise you won’t scream?”

Sue’s eyes lit up, with mischief. “Oh, I live for this.”

Aurelia rolled her eyes and took a deep breath. “Last weekend after the incident with Ethan… I went to this bar, I met a guy there. One thing led to another and… well, I ended up at his place.”

Sue’s eyes widened but she stayed silent.

“The sex was… amazing,” Aurelia added quickly, her voice barely above a whisper. “And I left before he woke up. Thought I’d never see him again. It was supposed to be a one-night stand."

Sue leaned in, whisper-shouting, “And now he’s your boss?!”

Aurelia covered her face. “Yes! Lucas freaking Winthrop.”

Sue whistled under her breath. “Girl, I thought you were going to say you slept with your cousin’s ex or something. This is way hotter.”

“Sue!”

“I’m serious!” Sue grinned. “You, my friend, are living in a modern-day romance novel. Forbidden love, high fashion, hot CEO? It’s a spicy fan fiction.”

“I’m freaking out, Sue. This could ruin everything. If anyone finds out you know…”

“They won’t,” Sue said gently. “Unless you start making out with him in the middle of a campaign shoot.” She paused, then smirked. “Although, that would be iconic.”

Aurelia rolled her eyes, but her heart felt lighter having told Sue.

Just then, Jake walked by with his tablet, eyes glued to the screen. “Aura, Su,” he said warmly, then glanced up and added with a grin, “Our star of the day.”

“Jake,” Aurelia said carefully, “you’re no longer mad I was late this morning?”

Jake sighed and waved a hand. “Mi amor, you’re one of my best girls. You showed up, nailed it, and didn't throw a diva tantrum. You think I was always on time when I modeled in Milan? Oh Please.”

Sue laughed. “Wait, you modeled?”

“Briefly. For a very tragic denim brand.” He struck a pose. “I was their 'bad boy in bootcut'.” Then he made a gagging sound.

Both girls burst into laughter.

Jake stood beside Aurelia, grinning like a mischievous child — and then his grin widened as a tall, tanned man with sun-streaked hair appeared at the top of the staircase. “Roland!” Jake called, his voice brimming with excitement. The man turned, his face breaking into a wide smile. “Jake!” The two met halfway, hugging tightly before their fingers laced together naturally. “You look gorgeous,” Roland murmured, eyes dancing with affection. “You say that every time,” Jake teased, cheeks pink. “And I mean it every time.” Hand in hand, they strolled off, laughing softly to themselves, disappearing through one of the arched corridors. Aurelia smiled faintly at the sight — love always had a way of warming her heart, especially when it was simple and free like that. But when she turned, she realized Eloise, Max, and Kyle had already vanished. She scanned the wide terrace and caught a glimpse of them near the palm-lined path to the pool — Eloise’s yellow sundress fluttering as Max ca

“Careful, you’re gonna spill that on me, sunshine!” Jake teased, grinning. “Then don’t move so much!” she shot back, smirking, her waist swaying in time to the music. Sue, stretched out beside him in a tiny red bikini and oversized sunglasses, tossed her blonde hair and laughed. “God, Aurelia, you’re too hot to be domestic. Let the man spill it!” Aurelia rolled her eyes, laughing. “Behave!” Eloise, sitting nearby in a mellow yellow bikini, smiled over the rim of her coconut drink. The sun loved her — her skin glowed, her eyes relaxed, her laughter soft. Max, in his bright blue trunks, sat next to her, grinning like a schoolboy. “Don’t look now, but I think someone’s smitten,” Sue whispered loud enough for Aurelia to hear, nodding toward Eloise and Max. Aurelia giggled, pouring herself a small drink. “Let her live a little.” Not far off, little Kyle was by the railing, his red-and-white button-up fluttering in the sea breeze, white shorts gleaming against his tanned legs. He wa

They sat for a while after that, not speaking much. Aurelia’s story—hung between them like the fragile glass of a chandelier: easy to shatter, but breathtaking while it held. When she finally rose to go to the bathroom, Lucas stood and came with her, watching as she moved with a care he admired. She paused in the doorway, looked back at him, and said, almost to herself, “I don’t want to run anymore.” “They will do the running this time,” he answered without hesitation. It was not a grand declaration filled with fireworks—just two quiet people in a large room with a promise hard-earned and unlikely to be broken. ----- The hum of the jet was steady, a deep, gentle vibration that felt almost like a lullaby. Through the small oval windows, clouds stretched endlessly, soft and golden under the morning sun. The world below was a watercolor blur — distant and quiet. They were heading to Santorini, to Lucas’s private island just off the coast — a piece of paradise that most people didn’

Her hands clenched in her lap. “He was married. I didn’t know that for a while. He lied. He told me he loved me in ways that made me feel like a person again. I was foolish. I wanted him to see me. We met in motels. It was messy and secret and dangerous because I thought—if I had him, maybe I was not the girl who ate dinner in her bed and brushed off insults from her stepmother.” Lucas’s face was unreadable, the lines around his mouth taut with the effort of containing himself. Aurelia didn’t look at him; she looked at the space where the shadows pooled in the corner. “Eloise found out.” The word landed like a stone. “She saw him at a café with his wife. She followed him and saw him go home with her. She came home and told me. I… I went to confront him. I was furious, humiliated. He didn’t deny it. He looked at me like I was a foolish child and then—then his wife followed. She was not the quiet type. She burst into the motel we were meeting, and everything was chaos. She beat me. Sh

Lucas’s bedroom was quiet save for the low hum of the heaters and the city noise muffled by thick drapes. He sat on the edge of the king-size bed—shirt sleeves rolled, trousers neat—looking every part the composed man the world expected. Aurelia paced in front of him, he poured her a drink. “Thank you,” she said, taking the glass with hands that still shook. She set it down on the bedside table and inhaled. "I have not told this story like this. But I'll try." Lucas watched her with the patience of a man who’d learned to wait for the real words. “Tell me when you’re ready,” he said softly. She sat on the arm of a chair, then on the floor and started, voice low and steady at first, then gathering strength as she moved through the years. “I don’t really remember my parents,” she said. “Not the way other people remember—there was my mother's picture, only one. The first clear memories I have are of these crowded foster home. I learned very fast that being small didn’t mean you got n

She got to the door, her knuckles white around the handle. She didn’t knock. She pushed the door open. Lucas sat behind his desk, papers scattered before him, his phone pressed to his ear. His sleeves were rolled up, his tie loosened, and there was a tension in his posture that hadn’t left since he returned. The sound of the door made him glance up immediately. When he saw her — hair slightly disheveled, chest rising and falling with barely contained emotion — he muttered a quick “I’ll call you back,” and dropped the phone onto the desk. “Are you okay?” he said quietly, his tone guarded. Aurelia stepped inside, shutting the door behind her. The click of the latch sounded louder than it should have. “What did you ask Eloise?” she demanded, her voice trembling but sharp. Lucas frowned, taken aback. “I asked her what’s been bothering you. You’ve been distant since the press conference when...I thought—” “You thought interrogating my sister was the way to find out?” she cut in, he
