Three months after the twins were born, Emma was exhausted in a way that sleep couldn't fix.

Alexander and Sophia were beautiful but demanding. They cried at different times. They fed at different schedules. Emma's body felt like it didn't belong to her anymore.

One night, after the babies finally fell asleep, Damien found her standing in the kitchen at three in the morning, staring at nothing.

"Come to bed," he said.

"I can't," Emma replied. "One of them will wake up."

"Then come sit with me for five minutes," Damien said.

He led her to the bedroom and pulled her onto the bed, still fully clothed. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, his chin resting on her shoulder.

"I know this is hard," he said.

"I love them," Emma said. "But I don't recognize myself anymore."

Damien was quiet for a moment.

"When do you want me?" he asked.

Emma didn't understand the question at first.

"As a woman," Damien continued. "Not as a mother. Not as my wife. As Emma. When do you want me to want you?"

Emma felt tears sliding down her face.

"I don't know," she said honestly. "I don't know who I am right now."

Damien turned her around to face him. He looked at her like she was the only thing that mattered.

"You're the woman who married me for money and ended up saving my life," he said. "You're the woman who survived betrayal and violence and came out stronger. You're the woman I love."

He kissed her forehead, then her cheek, then her lips. Slowly. Carefully. Like he had all the time in the world.

"We don't have to do anything tonight," he said. "But I want you to know that I'm still here. I'm still yours. Whenever you're ready."

Emma leaned into him and they fell asleep like that. Fully clothed. Just holding each other.

Over the next few weeks, things shifted between them slowly.

Emma started leaving the babies with a nanny for a few hours on Saturday afternoons. She needed time alone. Time to remember what it felt like to be herself.

She went to the gallery. She painted. She sat in coffee shops and read books that had nothing to do with parenting.

And slowly, she started to remember who Emma was outside of being someone's wife or someone's mother.

One Saturday, when she came home early from the gallery, she found Damien on the couch with both babies asleep on his chest. He was reading. He looked peaceful in a way she'd never seen him before.

She took a photo without thinking about it.

That night, after the babies were down, Damien was in the shower when Emma got into bed. She was reading when he came out, water dripping from his hair, his body still warm from the hot water.

He got into bed beside her without saying anything.

Emma set down her book.

Damien moved closer and kissed her neck. Slowly. His hands found the hem of her shirt and slid underneath, touching her skin like he was rediscovering her.

"Is this okay?" he asked.

"Yes," Emma whispered.

He undressed her slowly, kissing every inch of her body. The scar on her chest from the gunshot. The stretch marks from the pregnancy. The parts of her that had changed.

He treated her body like it was sacred.

When they made love, it was different from before. Not passionate or desperate. Deliberate. Like they were learning each other for the first time.

Afterward, they lay in the darkness and Emma felt something shift inside her.

She wasn't just recovering. She was healing.

Over the next month, they found a rhythm. Saturday afternoons were Emma's time. Wednesday evenings, Damien would take the babies while Emma showered and they'd have dinner together after the babies were asleep.

They talked about real things. Not the drama or the past. Their dreams. Their fears about parenting. What they wanted for their children.

One evening, Damien told her something.

"I've been thinking about stepping back from the company," he said. "Not completely. But enough to be present with you and the kids."

"You don't have to do that," Emma said.

"I want to," Damien replied. "I spent my whole life building an empire because I thought that's what mattered. But it doesn't. You matter. The kids matter. Being here matters."

Emma reached across the table and took his hand.

"I'm scared sometimes," she said. "That we're going to fall back into old patterns. That you're going to start controlling things again. That I'm going to stop speaking up."

"I'm scared too," Damien said. "That I'm going to mess this up. That I'm not going to be the husband you need."

"You already are," Emma said. "You're here. You're honest. That's enough."

One night, Emma woke up at three in the morning and couldn't fall back asleep. She went to the living room and found Damien already awake, holding Sophia who'd been fussy.

He was singing to her. Softly. His voice was terrible but his intention was perfect.

Emma watched from the doorway, understanding that this was what love actually looked like. Not the grand gestures. Not the control. Not the obsession.

It was a man singing badly to his daughter at three in the morning because she needed comfort.

It was showing up. Every single day. In the small moments that added up to a life.

Damien saw her and smiled. He motioned for her to come sit with him.

Emma sat beside him and they watched Sophia fall asleep together.

"I love you," Damien said.

"I love you too," Emma replied.

And she meant it in a way she'd never meant it before. Not because she needed him. Not because she was afraid of losing him. But because she chose him. Every single day.

By the time the twins were six months old, Emma had found a balance. She was a mother and a wife and an artist and herself.

All at the same time.

And for the first time since the contract marriage began, she wasn't surviving.

She was actually living.

Emma opened the envelope slowly. Richard's handwriting was neat. Precise. The handwriting of someone who'd spent years controlling everything, including how he presented himself on paper. Dear Emma, I don't know if you'll ever read this. I don't know if you'll care. But I need to try. I am your biological father. You know that now. What you may not know is that I've known about you since before you married Damien. I had you investigated. I learned everything about you. Your struggles. Your strength. Your refusal to give up even when everything was working against you. And I was proud of you. That's the truth I need you to understand. I didn't orchestrate Margaret's attack because I wanted to hurt you. I orchestrated it because I thought you were getting too close to discovering the truth about Katherine's death. I thought if I removed you from the picture, Damien would stop asking questions. I thought I could protect myself by eliminating the threat. I was completely w

Emma's eyes opened to white walls and the sound of machines beeping. Her chest hurt. Everything hurt. A nurse was checking her vitals. "Welcome back," the nurse said. "You've been asleep for three days." Three days. Emma tried to remember but couldn't. Just fragments. Pain. Blood. Damien's voice calling her name. "The bullet didn't hit anything vital," the nurse continued. "You're going to recover." Emma tried to sit up but her body wouldn't cooperate. "Don't move," the nurse said. "You need rest." Over the next week, police came and took her statement. Lawyers came with documents. Damien never left her side. Margaret confessed to everything. Richard had been orchestrating it from prison, paying her to watch Emma, to report back, to make sure Emma stayed close to Damien. Richard knew Emma was his daughter. He'd known before the marriage. "He was using you," Damien said when he told her. "To help him get information. To help him rebuild his empire." Emma didn't

Margaret's voice on the phone had been calm but there was something underneath it. A threat wrapped in politeness. "Meet me at the manor," she'd said. "Alone. If you bring Damien, I won't talk." Emma had argued but Margaret hung up. Now Emma stood outside Cross Manor in the darkness, understanding that she was about to walk into something dangerous. Damien was supposed to be meeting her there in an hour. They'd agreed he would stay back and let Emma talk to Margaret first, then move in if things got bad. Emma had a panic button on her phone. One press and Damien would come running. She didn't plan on needing it. The manor was exactly as she remembered. Cold stone. Expensive everything. The kind of place that had seen too many secrets. Margaret was waiting in the study. "Thank you for coming," Margaret said. She was sitting in a leather chair, looking like she owned the world. "What do you want?" Emma asked. "To tell you the truth," Margaret replied. "About your hus

The gallery was packed. Emma stood in the back watching people move through the space, looking at her paintings. Strangers. Collectors. Critics. People who'd read about the drama and came out of curiosity instead of genuine interest in her work. She wore a black dress. Simple. Nothing that would distract from the paintings. Tyler arrived early. He looked good. Healthier than he had in the hospital. He moved slowly, like his body was still recovering, but his eyes were clear. "These are incredible," he said when he saw her paintings. "Thanks," Emma replied. They didn't hug. They didn't pretend things were normal between them. They just stood there acknowledging that something had shifted and they were both trying to navigate it. "I'm sorry," Tyler said. "I know I've said it a thousand times but I need you to know that I mean it." "I know you do," Emma said. "Does that mean you forgive me?" Tyler asked. Emma thought about it. About the lies. About the money. About

  • SECRETS OF THE BILLIONAIRE NECKLACE    CHAPTER 26: ALONE

Emma locked her apartment door and didn't leave for three days. She didn't answer Damien's calls. She didn't check on Tyler. She sat in her living room and stared at the walls, trying to understand how everything had gotten so broken. Around noon on the third day, there was a knock on her door. "Emma, I know you're in there," Damien said through the door. "Please let me in." She stood on the other side of the door, her hand on the lock, unable to move. "I'm not leaving until you talk to me," Damien continued. Emma opened the door. Damien looked worse than she felt. He hadn't shaved. He was wearing the same clothes from yesterday. His eyes were red. "Come back home," he said. "I can't," Emma replied. "Why not?" "Because I need to think," Emma said. "Because I need to figure out who I am without all of this." Damien moved into the apartment and closed the door behind him. "I understand you're scared," he said. "I'm scared too." "You don't understand," Emma
