My heart beat so fast I could barely breathe. My hands shook as they slipped down the straps of my dress. Tears blurred my eyes. “Tania… you can stop this now,” I whispered. “Why would I?” She stood there with her hand on her hip, acting like she could control everyone. “What are you waiting for? Take the damn dress off.” My lips trembled. She was really going to make me do this. “That’s enough.” Sam interrupted. I let out a shaky breath. Tania scoffed. “It’s only enough when I say it’s enough.” Sam stepped closer and pulled her into him, wrapping an arm around her waist like I wasn’t even there. She leaned into him, almost melting in his hold, neither of them caring that I was standing right in front of them, falling apart. “Come on, babe,” he murmured against her skin. “Let that be our parting gift to her. The only good thing she’ll ever have in this life.” He moved slowly and pressed a kiss to her neck. Tania giggled and drew herself deeper into him. “You’re right.” Then she turned, smirking at me. “You know what? We’re best friends after all, Belle. I’ll let you keep the dress.” I stared at them, first at Tania, then at Sam, then her again. This couldn’t be real. I wiped my cheeks with the back of my hand… and left. *** My heart ached so much I could barely stand. My vision blurred with tears as I returned home. Jenna had graciously let me live with her after college. I banged on the door with both fists, shaking so badly I could hardly breathe. The door flew open. I threw my arms around her, sobbing. “Belle! What’s going on?” Jenna grabbed my arms so she could look into my eyes. “They betrayed me in the cruelest way possible,” I cried, my voice shaking. She pulled me inside. “Who’s they?” “Sam has been cheating on me… with Tania. For months.” Saying it out loud made everything hurt even more. I lost my boyfriend and my best friend on the same night. “Oh my God…” Jenna dropped onto the couch like her legs couldn’t hold her. “Belle…I’m so sorry.” She drew me close, hugging me tight. “I’m sorry too,” I whispered, wiping my swollen eyes. “I don’t want to ruin your night. You and Jason should go without me.” “Heck no.” Jenna lifted my chin gently. “This was supposed to be a double date. And guess what? I’m not leaving without you. Screw Sam. You have me.” Her phone beeped. She checked the screen. “Jason’s outside.” “No, Jenna… I can’t.” “You’re going out with me,” she insisted, grabbing my hand. “And you’re going to have the best night. If Sam and Tania think you’ll hide in a corner and cry, they’re wrong.” “I… I don’t know.” “Well, I do.” She squeezed my hand. “Let’s go.” *** Jason drove us to Secret, a dark billionaire club located in the richest and wildest part of the city. The moment we walked in, the loud music welcomed us, the bass thrumming through my ears. People danced with no care in the world. Bodies pressed together. Some kissed against the walls. Some looked drunk, others clearly high. Waitresses moved through the crowd carrying trays of shots. If sin was a place, I was standing right in it. And somehow… It felt like exactly what I needed. We pushed through the crowd toward the VIP section. “Gosh, Jason, how did you even get us up here?” Jenna looked around with wide eyes, impressed and excited. “I saved for six months.” Jason grinned like he’d just won a trophy. “Tickets were crazy expensive.” We finally reached our table, and the waiter immediately set down a full row of shots. “Here we go,” Jenna giggled, already grabbing one. She pushed another toward me. I picked up the first shot and swallowed it in one go. The burn raced down my throat and hit my stomach fast. I coughed, sucked in a breath, then grabbed another and drank that one too. And then another. Warmth spread through me right away. I could feel it doing its magic, loosening everything inside me. And hopefully, by the time I was done drinking, I wouldn’t feel the pain anymore. That was the goal. “Go, girl!” Jenna winked, surprised as she gulped her own shot. “I’m going to drink until I forget everything about tonight,” I muttered, almost proud of myself. “Nope.” Jenna shook her head. “Tonight is about you, girl. You want a total reset? Then that’s exactly what’s going to happen. We just need the right man for you.” “Jenna…” “Nope.” She shut me up with one look and started scanning the whole VIP area. “How about that one?” She pointed at a man who raised his drink at me. “Uh… no.” I quickly looked away without giving him a second thought. “Bummer. Okay, what about that one?” She pointed at another man who licked his lips. It made me feel weird, and I turned my head again. “Not him either.” “At this rate, you’re not going to get laid tonight.” She sighed. “Belle, you’re picking the man who’s going to give you mind blowing sex, strong enough to knock Sam out of your system completely, not a husband.” “Jenna…” I hissed. She ignored me and pointed at another man. This one opened his jacket and showed off his broad chest like it was supposed to impress me. Instead, it only made me feel creeped out. “Absolutely not,” I muttered under my breath. “Matchmaker, give her a moment to breathe,” Jason teased. “Fine, only for a few minutes,” Jenna made sure to warn me. Then she and Jason melted into their own little bubble, laughing, kissing, whispering to each other. Good. I wanted a moment alone with my own thoughts. I let my eyes wander through the club. And then… My eyes landed on him. The most strikingly handsome man I’d ever met, sitting at the most expensive spot in the VIP area, behind dark glass. My heart stopped. He had a full view of everything going on in the club. I couldn’t help but wonder if he’d noticed me at all tonight. He seemed untouchable, not the kind of man who was easily accessible. I spotted two big men standing behind him like protectors, probably his bodyguards. He leaned back in his seat like he owned the entire club, or more, the entire city. I tilted my head to see him even closer. My eyes traveled over his strong jaw, defined cheekbones, and lips that looked too tempting to ignore. Until his dark green eyes locked on me with a force that made a shiver run straight through my core. I’d never felt anything like it before. And for a moment, I forgot how to breathe. Then he stood.James“Strip.”Her hands trembled as they moved to the zipper of her dress. She hesitated.I stepped closer. “Now, Belle.”She pulled the zipper down and the dress fell to the floor. She stood there in her underwear, her chest rising and falling fast. I walked around her slowly, appreciating the body that had driven me wild every single day since I laid eyes on her. My God, she was a goddamn goddess. “All of it.”Her breath caught. She reached behind and unhooked her bra. It dropped. Then she slid her panties down. She was completely bare before me.Her body was a sight I could behold for as long as I lived. She was perfect for me. How had I survived all these years without her? She was the woman I needed. The one I wanted.I wasn’t going to let myself grow weak, but I wasn’t going to live in denial either. If I had met her instead of Angelina, our lives would have been different. Then again, that was impossible. She was Tania’s age, and I was far older than her. Wishful thinking had
James Why the bloody hell was Devon standing next to my woman?I was boiling inside, forcing myself not to punch him in the gut for hugging her.I shot Belle a warning look. She moved closer to me immediately.“Devon, thanks for today. I’ll see you tomorrow.” Devon gave a short nod. “Good night, Belle. Good night, Mr. Wilder.” He gave a polite bow and walked toward his car.My attention shifted back to Belle.“What did I say about staying away from Devon?”Her shoulders lifted slightly. “He helped me with the flowers. We took them to a hospital. The patients were so happy. The whole place felt brighter. I’m glad we did it.”Her face lit up as she talked.I watched her.I could send her a thousand flowers every day just to make her smile like that. She was so lovable in every way. If I were ever to give love a chance, it would only be with her.Fuck. Get a grip, James.I forced the thought away. “Belle, that’s still not an excuse.”Her smile faded.“I told you to stay away from him
Belle“Cut it out, Tania. Belle doesn’t owe you anything.”“This is between me and my best friend, Devon. Stay the hell out of this.”They stared at each other. Hard. Devon’s arms crossed. Tania’s hands balled into fists.Devon didn’t blink. “I don’t even know why you’re so worked up about this.”“Because she lied to me!” Tania turned back to me, her face red. “You lied, Belle.”“I didn’t want to tell you because I knew you’d react like this.” I pressed my hands together. “That’s why I kept it from you.”“You mean to tell me that Devon is your boyfriend? The one who bought you the car? The one who sent you all these flowers?”My fingers twisted together. “What do you want me to say, Tania?” I sighed. “You asked.” That was the best I could come up with. I couldn’t exactly give James’ credit to Devon. Tania couldn’t believe it. She looked between me and Devon. He looked at me.I mouthed, “Please.”He sighed. “Yeah. Belle is my girlfriend.”“Now that that’s out of the way, maybe you ca
BelleHe claimed one last kiss from me, then pulled back. “We’ll finish this tonight.”I nodded, smiling. I was loving every bit of this James standing right in front of me. He’d been different since the night I was attacked.“Mr. Lynn’s project design. Any chance you can hand that over to me today?”“Yes. I have it on my laptop.”“Good,” he noted.Just as he was about to leave the office, Devon entered.James looked back at me. A vein pulsed in his temple. His fingers curled into fists. His breathing changed.Crap. He hated seeing me with Devon.“Oh, sorry. Am I interrupting?” Devon looked between us.“No,” I said quickly. “Mr. Wilder was just leaving.”James’ eyes burned into mine. His nostrils flared. He looked between Devon and me, his chest rising and falling faster. His hands opened and closed at his sides like he was restraining himself.“I just wanted to congratulate you again.” Devon smiled. “And I found your hair clip Belle. You left it on your old desk.”“Oh, thank you, Dev
Belle James walked in, and I stepped back, my heart already racing.“You did all this… for me?”“Yes.” He didn’t deny it.“Why?”“I’m the only man who should make you smile. No other man should be able to measure up.”“James.” I chuckled. “This is a lot.”“Do you like it?”I licked my lips. “I love it.” I beamed. “But it’s all too much. First a new driver, then a garden in my office, and Amelia’s office becoming mine. It’s overwhelming. I can’t take it all in.”“It’s alright. I can have them move the flowers to your room at home if you’d feel more comfortable.”“And what about Tania?” I placed a hand on my waist. “James, it isn’t just about the bouquet. I’m talking about the office. This is Amelia’s office. I feel wrong taking it.”“You shouldn’t. She’s the reason you got hurt, and you deserve this.”“If I were any other employee, would I even be here?”He paused. “This is your office. That’s final.”“What do you think the rest of the staff would say?”“I don’t bloody care, Belle.”“
Belle “You have to get me out of this.” I looked anxiously at James as he watched the doctor examining the bruises on my face.“Ssh.” He pressed a finger to his lips like I was disrupting his concentration. He looked tense as he watched the doctor.“She’s recovering excellently well, Mr. Wilder.” The doctor turned to James. He exhaled in relief. “Thank you, doctor.”“So that means I can go back to work?” The thought excited me. James had stayed with me, but still, I couldn’t keep him away from meetings with stakeholders and I certainly didn’t want to keep being the fragile girl he had to protect.James turned from me to the doctor.“I don’t see why not. Physically she is okay, but after what happened, she should see a therapist for any psychological trauma left behind.”“No need. I’m doing perfectly fine. I got mugged. Everyone has at some point in their lives, right?”“Belle, I know you want to get back to work, but…”“James, I’m fine. I promise.”“Very well. I recommend an addition
Belle Crap. I'd said too much. I couldn't tell her the truth."Not exactly. What I mean is we bumped into each other and now he is...taking over my whole thoughts. I can't get him out of my head." I twisted my hands in my lap, avoiding her eyes."Wow...you really like him?" She stared in awe, a g
Belle The news had spread. The entire office was singing my praise. Not only was the boss impressed with my design but the Briggs group loved it too. We'd won the contract."Congratulations Belle," the words kept coming as I headed to my desk from everyone, fellow interns like me, senior employees
Belle The doors started to open and he stepped back quickly, putting distance between us.His eyes traveled over me from head to toe, taking in my flare dress that fell generously below my knees as we stepped out of the elevator. I'd made sure to put on a decent dress hoping everyone would forget
James Belle’s eyes met mine nervously."I’ll take this." I swooped in, taking the coffee from Tania and placing a hand on her back, guiding her toward my office.I relaxed into the leather chair in my office, taking a sip of the coffee. "Just how I like it. Good job, Tania." "Thanks, Dad." She b
