TRIXIE

Life in North Creek had grown gentle. Each day carried its own rhythm, and I found myself breathing easier than I had in years. The war felt far behind, though its scars still rested in my memory.

The pups had begun to change quickly. Marielle was already crawling, reaching for everything she saw. Ryker was loud, his little cries filling the keep like a trumpet call. Afina stayed quiet.

Ryker was never far from us. I often woke to find him rocking one of the pups against his chest, his deep hum soothing them better than any song. At times, I would watch him in silence, my heart swelling in a way words could not capture.

The pack thrived too. The courtyard was full of laughter again. Children played with wooden toys Droco had made. Lana gathered herbs by the stream and always stopped by with a warm smile, checking the pups as if they were her own grandchildren.

Every evening, when the sun dipped low, the pack came together by the firepit. We ate simple meals — roasted meat, bak

  • SILVER IN THE SHADOWS   A MOTHER'S WRATH

The sun had barely risen when the bell rang out across North Creek. Its sound was sharp, urgent, calling every pack member to the great hall. The courtyard filled quickly, voices buzzing with questions. Few could remember the last time an emergency meeting had been called without warning. At the center, Trixie stood. Her face was pale from long nights with the pups, but her eyes were steel. Beside her, Ryker loomed, his hand resting on the hilt of his blade, though she had not asked him to speak. In her arms, the smallest of the pups stirred, and she pressed a steadying kiss to her child’s brow before giving the child to Lana. When the hall fell quiet, Trixie’s voice cut through the air.“Last night, words were spoken in the shadows. Words not of loyalty, but of betrayal. Two among us plotted against what we hold most dear — against the future of this pack. They spoke of touching the heirs.”Gasps rippled across the hall. Some looked in horror, others in disbelief. Mira and Kira froze

  • SILVER IN THE SHADOWS   MADNESS

The morning was bright, the air sharp with the smell of pine. Trixie walked across the courtyard with Afina in her arms. Ryker carried little Ryker on his shoulder, while Marielle ran her small hands along the edge of her mother’s cloak, fussing until she was lifted too. Several pack members paused to greet them, offering smiles and nods of respect. Trixie answered kindly, though her strength was still returning.Mira stood by the training yard, her arms crossed as she watched. She had meant only to whisper, but her voice carried louder than she intended.“Strange,” she said to Kira at her side. “The commander looks more like a nursemaid than a leader these days.”A few nearby warriors stiffened, their eyes darting between Mira and Trixie. Some pretended not to hear. Others shifted uneasily. The words hung in the air like smoke.Trixie paused. She turned her head slightly, her gaze finding Mira’s. For a long moment, no sound passed between them. Trixie did not raise her voice, nor did

  • SILVER IN THE SHADOWS   ANTON

TRIXIEAfter the pups had settled down, I asked Lana to watch them for a short while. Then I turned to Trisha.“Come,” I said. “We should talk.”She followed me into one of the smaller chambers, the heavy door closing behind us. The air inside was cool. Only the faint smell of pine resin from the walls filled the space.Trisha leaned against the table, arms folded, her eyes sharp as always. “You kept it from me,” she said without hesitation. “The pregnancy. The truth.”I met her gaze, steady. “Yes. I did.”Her brow lifted, but I saw no anger, only something like curiosity. “Why?”“Because it was mine to carry,” I answered simply. “Mine to protect. The war, the danger, even the doubts in my own heart—none of that left room for sharing. And you… you have not always been safe ground for me.”For a long moment she was silent. Then she nodded slowly, almost to herself. “Fair. I suppose I don’t deserve to be trusted with something like that. You don’t owe me explanations, Trixie. Not anymor

  • SILVER IN THE SHADOWS   UNEXPECTED VISIT

TRIXIEThe days passed more easily now. My body had healed, my strength returning bit by bit until I could rise without help, carry the pups, and walk the courtyard without feeling faint. Ryker still watched me too closely at times, but I could see the relief in his eyes when I moved with ease again. The pups were at the center of every day. Marielle was the loudest, always first to cry, first to demand attention, her little fists punching the air as if she wanted to fight the whole world already. Ryker, our son, was full of restless energy. He kicked his legs, squirmed out of his blankets, and made us laugh with his stubbornness. Afina was different. Quiet, patient, her eyes wide and watchful, as if she was already learning more than she let on.Each morning I rose with them. I bathed them in warm water scented with herbs Lana brought. I dressed them in the small clothes I had mended by the fire. Then I carried them outside, one by one, so they could feel the sun.The pack loved thos

  • SILVER IN THE SHADOWS   MEETING THE WORLD

TRIXIEEight weeks had passed. The pups had grown strong in that time. Their tiny cries had become sharper, their little hands quick to reach for warmth, their eyes beginning to open wide to the world. Each day, I had watched them change, and each day my heart had stretched a little more, as if it had no limits. But we had stayed hidden, close within the walls of the keep. Only Lana and Droco had been allowed near, their visits quiet and careful. The rest of the pack had waited with patience, their curiosity burning but held back by respect. Now the time had come. The morning was bright, the sun spilling like gold across the courtyard. The air was fresh, carrying the smell of pine and earth. Ryker stood beside me, tall and steady, though I could feel the tension in him — a mix of pride and protectiveness. The pack had gathered, filling the open space. Men, women, and children, their faces lifted toward us, their eyes shining with expectation. Some clutched flowers, others carried small
