Chapter 12

CELESTE:

As soon as the mass was over, I rushed out alone. Walking out with Christian would only prove whatever it is Sister Theresa was thinking, and I wasn’t ready for her questioning. Thankfully, Christian didn’t go after me.

I ran to the garden and leaned on the fence, trying to catch my breath.

Lord, please. I had barely prayed as a result of Christian’s presence. My thoughts and emotions were so scattered, and I was panting.

“Celeste?” I felt a hand on the small of my back, and I jumped in fright.

“What?” I shrieked. I turned to see it was Esme, and standing next to her was Alice, clutching her teddy bear.

“Jesus. Celeste, are you okay? You look so pale and agitated. What is going on?” Esme questioned, with a concerned expression on her face.

I glanced at Alice before looking back at Esme.

“I have told you before. Stop scaring me. I’m fine.” I said, looking away.

“You are lying. What is going on? Why are you acting so jumpy?” She questioned again, and I sighed.

  • SIN FOR ME, VIRGIN NUN   A ROSARY FOR MY SILENCE

CHAPTER 13CELESTE:My feet hurt badly now. I had been standing at a spot for the past three hours now, waiting for the candle flames to go out. Sister Theresa had lit five big candles, and was only going to question me when they went out. Till then, I was going to keep standing. My tummy was rumbling hungrily, it was way past dinner time. Sister Theresa had gotten her meal down to her bedroom with the excuse that she didn’t feel so good.Esme was right. She is a horrible witch! Two of the candles had gone out now. At this point, I could barely feel my legs.“Stop moving!” She ordered the moment I tried to wriggle my legs.“Sister, my legs are aching.” I mumbled.“Are the candles out now?” She questioned, and I meekly shook my head in negation.“So, shut up.” She responded, glaring at me. I wondered what doctrine she lived by, because only a follower of Jezebel would act like that. She knelt down beside her bed to say the rosary, and I stared at her with contempt. Dear Lord, Mother

  • SIN FOR ME, VIRGIN NUN   NEVER WANTING TO FALL

CHAPTER 11CELESTE:I could barely sleep last night, and I found myself turning from side to side. My hair was fanned out around my head like a halo as I stared at the ceiling. The more I tried to ignore him, the closer he got to me. After my morning prayer, I took a walk around the chapel to clear my head. The sound of the birds chirping in the background filled my ears as I moved. Here, behind the chapel, nobody would disturb me. Most didn’t even know they could find me here. There was an old rusty bench which I settled on, staring out into space. I closed my eyes, hoping the quiet would hush the noise inside me. But instead, it drew something else out—a memory. Faint and worn like parchment left too long in the sun.A soft voice. A woman’s voice. Humming. Humming something sweet. In my head, the memory was so blurry that I was practically recalling it in black and white. It came and left like a whisper in the wind. I didn’t know her face, not fully. I just remembered warmth and

  • SIN FOR ME, VIRGIN NUN   THE WRONG SAVIOR

CHAPTER 10CELESTE:Matteo’s presence radiated importance. His suit looked expensive—too expensive for a mere visitor—and his polished charm put the entire staff on high alert. Sister Joan was already offering him tea like he was the Pope himself. And me? I stood a little straighter, smoothing out the front of my plain habit. So this was the man who saved us.The man who kept the roof over their heads. The man who gave the children another chance. The benefactor.I approached cautiously after everyone else had had their fill of small talk and fluttering gratitude. He was standing by the courtyard window, arms folded behind his back like someone surveying his land.I cleared my throat. “Excuse me, Mr Bellanti?” The name was sweet against my tongue. He turned, pleasantly surprised. “Yes?”“I just wanted to say… Thank you. From all of us. What you did—it means the world to us. The kids, the staff… me.”He blinked, then offered a modest smile. “You’re very welcome. It’s an honour to suppo

CHAPTER 009CELESTE: “Celeste William.” he called out in a casual tone, like we were old-time besties or something. Alice was standing between us, so I had to be nice. “Mr Christian”, I replied, trying to be polite. He held his gaze for a beat too long. “You know each other?” Alice asked innocently, beaming from ear to ear. My mouth opened to respond, but he beat me to it. “Yes, we’re good friends.”A shallow scoff left my throat, just loud enough for me to hear; maybe he did too, because his expression shifted into one of amusement. “Come, Alice,” I said, stretching out my hand. “Maybe we should head inside now. She was about to leave him when he gently pulled her back. “How did you get that bruise?” He enquired, seeming genuinely concerned. “Sister—”I interjected before she finished her sentence. “Alice”, I cautioned. She raised her head to look at me with a confused expression. “He is a guest; we don’t overshare in front of strangers or guests.”“But he’s your friend,” she a

  • SIN FOR ME, VIRGIN NUN   THE SECRET BENEFACTOR

CHAPTER 008CELESTE:My heart skipped a beat, and I squealed out of joy. “Oh, thank the lord!” I exclaimed, jamming my hands together as I looked towards the ceiling with a faint smile, a sigh of relief escaping my parted lips. Sister Theresa blinked a few times, her expression unreadable. “This is excellent news,” she began, stepping forward. “But who might this donor be?” she asked in her dry, cracked tone.Mother Lucia beamed brightly. “We will all meet with him in due time; I don’t want to say too much just yet,” she replied. Alice raised her head. “Does that mean we get to stay here?” she asked joyfully. “Yes, it does.”She jumped on her feet a few times excitedly, and when nobody was looking, she made sure to stick her tongue out at Sister Theresa, who didn’t take the gesture lightly. “Why, you little—”Her words were cut short when Father Elijah walked in, his lips curling into a warm smile. “Oh, I believe our mother in the Lord here, Lucia, has shared the good news with yo
