Chapter 27

Elena's POV

"Is there a problem here?"

Alexander's voice was quiet, and it carried the way his voice always did, without effort, as something dropped into still water. I did not turn around at once. I kept my eyes on Chloe's face, and I saw her flinch, a small tightening at the corner of the mouth.

"No," I said. "Chloe asked me a question, and I haven't finished answering it."

A pause behind me. I could feel him deciding. I had told him, only a night ago, in a study lit by one lamp,

Chapter 27Elena's POV"Is there a problem here?"Alexander's voice was quiet, and it carried the way his voice always did, without effort, as something dropped into still water. I did not turn around at once. I kept my eyes on Chloe's face, and I saw her flinch, a small tightening at the corner of the mouth."No," I said. "Chloe asked me a question, and I haven't finished answering it."A pause behind me. I could feel him deciding. I had told him, only a night ago, in a study lit by one lamp, exactly what I would and would not tolerate. I will answer them, and you will stand beside me.He did not speak. I heard his footsteps move, one pace back, and then stop. When I glanced over my shoulder, he stood with his hands clasped behind him and his gaze level, a man at the edge of a stage who has agreed not to walk onto it.It was a small thing. It was also the first time anyone had ever stepped back to let me fight my own battle.I turned to Chloe again."You didn't answer," she said. The

Chapter 26NATHAN POVI arrived late on purpose with Chloe.Chloe’s hand rested lightly in the crook of my arm as the dining room doors opened. Her wine red dress moved with her, elegant and deliberate. I already knew who would be sitting at my uncle’s right. Knowing did not prepare me.Elena sat beside Alexander. The plain gold band on her finger caught the light first. Above it, the sapphire rested against her throat like it had always belonged there. Alexander’s hand covered hers on the table, casual and proprietary. Neither of them looked startled to see me.Chloe’s voice was low beside me. “You’re quiet again. Still bothered?”“I’ve moved on,” I said. The words came out too fast.We reached the table.Elena looked up and her greeting was polite, measured, completely free of the softness I once took for granted.“Nathan. Chloe.”Just my name. Nothing else.I answered a beat too late. “Elena.”The sound of it felt wrong in my mouth. One of the older relatives chuckled from farther

  • THE BILLIONAIRES CONTRACT WIFE   The Family Dinner

Chapter 25Alexander POVThe dining room had been set for fourteen.Crystal caught the light from the chandelier. The long table gleamed under white linen. Staff moved with quiet precision, pouring wine, adjusting place settings, vanishing when not needed. I stood near the head of the table and watched the room fill.Richard arrived first, as expected. My father moved through the space with the same measured authority he had always carried, greeting relatives with brief nods and the occasional clipped word. His gaze found Elena the moment she entered at my side. She wore a simple black dress. No heavy jewelry except the sapphire at her throat. She did not cling to my arm. She did not smile too widely. She simply stood there, calm, and let the room look at her.Conversations paused.“So this is the new Mrs. Kingsley,” Aunt Margaret said, voice carrying farther than necessary. She was my mother’s younger sister, sharp-eyed and never shy about stating the obvious. “Alexander, you always

Chapter 24ALEXANDER POVThe mansion felt different the moment the car stopped beneath the portico.I stepped out first. The evening air carried the faint scent of rain that had not yet fallen. Behind me, Elena followed without waiting for my hand. She still wore the sapphire. The stone caught the light from the open doorway and threw a cold blue flash across the steps.Inside, the staff had lined the entrance hall. Every one of them stood straighter than usual.“Mrs. Kingsley,” the housekeeper said, voice steady. “Welcome home.”Elena paused. For a single breath, the title seemed to sit awkwardly on her. Then she inclined her head once, calm and precise.“Thank you. I’ll try not to make too much work for any of you.”A few of the younger staff exchanged glances. Something in the room loosened. I watched it happen and felt an unexpected flicker of satisfaction. She had not needed my help.I led her toward the study without speaking. The door closed behind us with a soft, expensive cli

Chapter 23Elena's POVThe aisle was forty-one steps long. I counted them, because counting was easier than thinking.Evans had promised the world a Kingsley wedding. Alexander had given him eighty guests, six photographers chosen by Marcus's office, and a venue Evans could not enter without an invitation: the Wren Room, a glass-roofed conservatory on the Upper East Side that Alexander had owned for ten years. White orchids climbed the pillars. Morning light fell through the glass in long, clean bars.It was beautiful. It was elegant. It was also, I understood, a wall.He had not canceled the public wedding. He had simply taken the public out of it.I had spent five days in that same careful silence with him. He had not asked about the car outside the café, and I had not asked about the trust amendment on my phone, the one I had read until the words stopped looking like words. We were two people walking around the same hole in the floor, politely, so neither of us would fall in.Now I

  • THE BILLIONAIRES CONTRACT WIFE   The Family's Judgment

Chapter 22Alexander's POVCareful. That was how Elena had looked at me yesterday outside the fitting room door: careful and polite, with her phone held face-down against her chest and her voice perfectly steady. I had asked if she had eaten. She had said yes. She had not eaten.I knew a person hiding something when I saw one. I had spent thirty years across boardroom tables from people who did the same. What unsettled me was that I did not want to ask. The moment I demanded her truth, she would demand mine, and her clause was still fresh on the page. No more surprises. I had signed it. I was already failing it."You look tired, Alexander."My brother's study had not changed in twenty years. Dark wood, heavy curtains, the smell of old leather and cold cigars. Our father's portrait still hung behind the desk, and Evans sat beneath it as if the chair had been made for him.I had come at nine o'clock in the morning because he had called at seven. A private word before the rehearsal, he h
