EPISODE 4 STRANGER AS SHE EXPECTED

The car stopped outside just as Lily’s father lowered his phone.

For one suspended moment, nobody moved. Headlights washed across the sitting room before fading. A door slammed outside.

Her father straightened his shirt.

 “He’s here.”

Lily kept her chin lifted. “Then he can explain why he thinks he has the right to decide my future.”

Her mother stood near the doorway, twisting her fingers together and looking away whenever Lily met her gaze.

A knock sounded.

Her father hurried to answer it. Lily stayed where she was, refusing to let fear carry her to the door. Daniel shifted closer, a quiet show of support that made her throat ache.

Marcel Richardson Bonaparte entered in a dark tailored suit, his expression composed. His eyes moved from Lily’s father to the papers, then settled on Lily.

“So,” he said, “you’re the one refusing to cooperate.”

“I asked for legal advice.”

“You refused to come when my representatives explained the arrangement.”

“They explained what your family wants. That isn’t the same as explaining what I’m legally required to do.”

His gaze sharpened. He placed his gloves beside the contract.

“Your family owes a substantial debt to a company within the Richardson group. Your parents agreed to a settlement that includes supervision and direction by my family.”

“My parents agreed,” Lily replied. “I didn’t.”

“Your signature isn’t listed as a condition of the provision being enacted.”

“That doesn’t make it fair, and I’ll keep asking questions.”

“Lily, please,” her father said.

“You discussed it with them. You signed me into an arrangement and expected me to accept it afterward.”

Marcel glanced at him. “You told me she understood the situation.”

“I thought she would understand once she heard the details,” her father said.

Lily stared at him. Even now, he was trying to make the betrayal sound like a misunderstanding.

Marcel turned back to her. “Your accommodation, expenses, and education will be covered.”

“And what do you get in return?”

“Compliance.”

The single word landed between them, blunt and unapologetic.

Lily’s hands curled at her sides. “I’m not a payment you can collect. I have classes, assignments, and a scholarship at Ravenwood University. You don’t get to control my life because my parents made a deal.”

“I’m not interested in your scholarship.”

“Then let me speak to a lawyer before I agree to anything.”

“I said the agreement does not depend on your signature.”

“And I heard you. Repeating it doesn’t answer my questions.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened. Their mother remained silent.

Marcel pulled out a chair but did not sit. “You think a lawyer will make the debt disappear?”

“No. I want to know what this contract permits and whether my parents had the right to promise my cooperation.”

“And if the agreement is enforceable?”

“I’ll deal with that after I understand it. I won’t walk blindly into it.”

Marcel’s composure hardened. “You’re determined to make this difficult.”

“You arrived at my house and called me uncooperative because I asked for advice. What word would you prefer?”

Her father stepped forward. “That’s enough. Marcel’s family has been patient with us. We can’t afford to make them our enemies.”

Lily turned on him. “You should have thought about that before making me part of the settlement.”

“We were running out of time,” her mother whispered.

“You should have told me the truth and let me help find another way.”

Marcel finally sat down. “Here is what happens next. The debt remains. The agreement remains in place unless a competent authority determines otherwise. I won’t have anyone drag you into a car tonight, and I won’t pretend you’ve agreed to something you haven’t.”

Lily watched him carefully. “That almost sounds reasonable.”

“Don’t mistake restraint for surrender.”

“I wouldn’t.”

He stacked the papers. “You’ll receive details tomorrow. Seek legal advice if you wish, but this arrangement will affect more than this house.”

“Is that a threat?”

“It’s a fact. Your family’s debt has consequences, and your university life may not remain untouched by them.”

Her pulse quickened, but she refused to show it. “If you or your family interfere with my education, I’ll document every step and challenge it.”

“Then keep good records.”

He stood and buttoned his jacket. “We’ll speak tomorrow.” Her father nodded. Marcel paused beside Lily.

“You have confidence in someone who doesn’t understand her position.”

“At least I know I’m allowed to ask.”

His eyes held hers for a moment. “Eight tomorrow morning. Be ready to discuss the next steps.”

“I’ll be ready to ask my questions.”

“That remains to be seen.”

Then he left.

The door closed. Lily did not move until the car had pulled away.

Daniel touched her shoulder. “I thought he was going to force you to leave with him.”

“He wanted me to know he could make things difficult without doing that tonight.”

Their father rubbed both hands over his face. “You don’t understand what we were facing.”

“Then explain it,” Lily said. “No more half-truths. Tell me how much the debt is, how long you’ve known about this arrangement, and why you signed without asking me.”

He looked at the floor. “I can’t explain everything tonight.”

“Of course you can’t.”

She walked away before her anger became words she would regret. In her room, she shut the door and let herself tremble. Fear and anger were real, but neither could be allowed to scatter her thoughts.

Her phone lit up with a message from Claire, her closest friend at Ravenwood.

I’m coming over in the morning. I found the student support office contact. We’ll call them together.

Lily thanked her, then opened her university calendar. Her seminar paper was due in two days. Losing her scholarship would make everything worse; Marcel could not be allowed to erase the future she had worked for.

A new message appeared from an unknown number.

Tomorrow. Eight o’clock. Be ready.

Before she could reply, another arrived.

A car will collect you.

Lily’s fingers went cold. She had not agreed to leave with a driver. She began typing a refusal, then stopped. She needed to know who had sent the messages.

Her phone rang.

The number was the same.

She accepted the call. “Who is this?”

“Miss Hopkin,” Marcel said. “There’s one thing you should understand before tomorrow.”

“I’m listening.”

“You can refuse to come with me, but you cannot pretend this arrangement won’t affect your life at Ravenwood.”

The call ended.

Lily stared at the dark screen. Marcel had left her house without taking her anywhere, yet somehow he had managed to make tomorrow feel like a door closing. She opened her calendar, wrote down the time of the call, saved the messages, and backed them up.

If he intended to turn her life into a battlefield, she would not face it without evidence.

Tomorrow, she would seek advice before answering anyone. Marcel had made his warning clear, but Lily refused to let fear make her decisions for her. She saved the contract details carefully before turning off the lamp.

Lily stared at her father. The envelope lay open between them, its paper edges softened by years of handling, though the notice inside looked newer than the rest of it. She could hear the kitchen clock ticking. Upstairs, Daniel’s footsteps crossed the floor and stopped.“What conditions?” she asked.Peter lowered himself into the chair beside the desk. “ Like I said before, we were given a repayment plan. Monthly instalments. A longer deadline. It was difficult, but we thought we could manage.”“Then why did you tell me the debt couldn’t be renegotiated?”“Because it couldn’t,” Helen said from the doorway.Lily turned to her mother. “Dad just said you had a plan.”“We had an offer,” Helen replied. “That isn’t the same thing as an agreement.”“Then which one of you is telling me the truth?”Neither answered quickly enough. The silence felt familiar now: the pause before another piece of her life was explained away as something too complicated for her to understand. Lily pulled the no

Lily read her father’s message again outside the lecture hall. The words followed her through the seminar. She tried to take notes and forced herself to answer a question about contractual obligations, but her page was filled with half-finished sentences. When the lecture ended, Ciara waited beside the steps.“You’re going home?” she asked.“My father says he needs to explain something before Marcel acts again.”“Do you want me to come with you?”Lily considered it. She needed to hear what her parents would say without allowing them to turn the conversation into a performance for someone else.“Not yet. If I need you, I’ll call.”“Promise you won’t sign anything.”“I won’t sign a thing until I understand every line.”Ciara squeezed her arm. “Keep your records somewhere safe.”“I have copies backed up.”“That’s one thing they can’t easily take from you.”When she reached home, the curtains were drawn despite the afternoon light. Her father sat at the kitchen table with the contract sp

Lily Couldn't sleep.Every time she closed her eyes, Marcel’s voice returned with the same calm warning: You cannot pretend this arrangement won’t affect your life at Ravenwood.By six in the morning, she had stopped trying to sleep and started making a list. The first page recorded what had happened: the date, the time Marcel arrived, the words he used, and the fact that he had said no one would force her into a car that night. Beneath it, she copied the messages about eight o’clock and the car that would collect her. She saved the call details and sent copies to an email account her family did not know about.A soft knock came at her door.“Lily?” Daniel asked. “Mum’s making tea. Dad wants to talk.”“Does he want to tell me the truth this time?”Daniel did not answer immediately. “He says he’ll explain what he can.”“That means he’ll explain what makes him look least guilty.”She heard her brother sigh through the door. “I know you’re angry.”“I’m not only angry.” She opened the d

The handwritten note lay between Lily and the two men at the door. Its meaning was plain enough; the confidence behind it was what unsettled her. Marcel Richardson Bonaparte had made a decision about her before they had ever met.Lily pushed the paper back across the table. “You can tell him I’m not going.”The taller representative closed his folder. “Miss Hopkin, we’re here to explain the arrangements, not argue about them.”“Then explain why a man I’ve never met thinks he can summon me.”Her father hovered beside the dining chair, pale and tense. “Lily, please. Don’t make this worse.”She turned on him. “Worse for whom? You signed the agreement. You knew they planned to come tonight. You had three weeks to tell me.”His eyes dropped to the floor. The silence felt like another signature.“I want an independent solicitor,” Lily said. “I want a copy of every page, including whatever terms you claim apply to me. Until someone explains my rights, I’m not going anywhere.”“The settlemen

Lily stared at the document as if the crest might rearrange itself into something less terrible. The Richardson emblem sat at the top of the page: a silver crown above a black shield, its sharp lines pressed into thick cream paper. Beneath it, her full name had been typed beside a number so large she read it twice before understanding it.“What is this?” she asked. Her father stood on the other side of the dining table, refusing to meet her eyes. Her mother remained beside the kitchen doorway, twisting a dish towel between her hands.“It’s a settlement,” her father said.“A settlement for what?”“The debt.”Lily let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “You said the bank had extended the deadline. You said you were handling it.”“We were trying to protect you,” her mother whispered.“From what? The truth?”The question struck harder than Lily intended. Her mother flinched, and that small movement frightened her more than a shout would have. For years, Lily had defended her parents whenev
