Serena's Pov

I couldn't sleep after what happened in the garden.

Carmine's face kept appearing in my mind. The desperation in his eyes. The way he had grabbed my arm. The way the guards had dragged him away. And then Dimitrio. His fist connected with Carmine's jaw. The cold fury in his voice.

I had sat on the bed for hours after they left. My hands were shaking. My heart wouldn't stop pounding. Elena had come to check on me. She brought tea. I didn't drink it.

"You should rest," she said.

Dimitrio Serena stood frozen outside the door. I could see the fear in her eyes. The hesitation. The weight of everything pressing down on her. She stared at the name on the door like it was a ghost. Lucia Marino. Her mother. "Serena," I said softly. "You don't have to go in if you're not ready." She didn't answer. She just kept staring. "We can wait," I said. "We can go get coffee. Walk around. Take as much time as you need." Still nothing. I took her hand. It was cold. Shaking. "Hey," I said. "Look at me." She turned. Her eyes were wet. Tears were already forming. "I can't do this," she whispered. "Yes, you can." "What if she's already dead? What if I'm too late?" "Then we'll deal with it. But you'll never know unless you open that door." She looked back at the door. At the name. At the white card with black letters. "I'm scared," she said. "I know. But I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere." She took a breath. Then another. Then she nodded. "Okay," she said. "Oka

Serena's Pov The road stretched ahead of us like a gray ribbon.I stared out the window. The countryside passed by. Fields. Trees. Small towns. I didn't really see any of it. My mind was somewhere else. In the past with my mother.Dimitrio held my hand. He didn't speak. He didn't try to fill the silence with empty words. He just held on. Steady. Solid. Present.I was grateful for that. The hours passed. The sun moved across the sky. The car hummed along the highway. I leaned my head against the window and closed my eyes.I saw her face. My mother's face. Not the face I had seen at the gate. Not the tired, worn face of the woman who had come begging for forgiveness. But the face from my childhood. Young. Beautiful. Smiling. She used to smile at me sometimes. When she was sober. When she wasn't lost in her own pain. She would brush my hair and tell me I was pretty. She would sing songs from her hometown. She would hold me and promise that everything would be okay. But it wasn't okay. I

Dimitrio's Pov I held her as she cried. We were in our bedroom. She was shaking. Sobbing. Her tears soaked through my shirt. I didn't care. I just held her. I held her like she was the only thing keeping me alive. Because she was. I hated seeing her like this. Broken. Vulnerable. The woman who had fought off Nadia's knife. The woman who had stood before the council and defended herself. The woman who had faced down a soldier without flinching. She was falling apart in my arms and it was because of her mother. A woman who didn't deserve her tears. A woman who had sold her. Betrayed her. Abandoned her. If I could, I would kill Lucia Marino myself. I would make her pay for every tear Serena had ever shed. For every moment of pain she had caused. But I couldn't. Because Serena needed closure. And killing her mother would only make things worse. "Shh," I whispered. "I've got you. I'm here." She didn't answer. She just cried harder. We stayed like that for a long time. The sun ro

"Every time I close my eyes, I see him. Carmine. The way he looked at me. Like he owned me." "He doesn't own you. No one does." "I know. But he made me feel like I was still that scared girl he sold. Like nothing had changed." Elena sat beside me. "Everything has changed. You're not that girl anymore. You're the don's queen. You're strong. You fought back." "Did I? Or did I just scream until someone came to save me?" "

Carmine's Pov She was beautiful. Even more beautiful than I remembered. Her red hair was loose around her shoulders. Her green eyes were wide with shock. She was wearing a white nightgown. She looked like an angel. But she was looking at me like I was the devil. She didn't move. She just stared at me through the glass. Her hand was on the latch. But she didn't open it. "Please," I said again. "Just a few minutes. That's all I ask." She unlocked the window and pushed it open. The night air rushed in. It was cold. But I didn't care. "What are you doing here?" Her voice was hard. Angry. But there was something else there too. Fear. "I came to see you. To explain." "Explain what? How you sold me? How you betrayed me?" "I know. I know what I did was wrong. But I've changed. I'm not the same man I was." She laughed. It was a bitter sound. "People don't change." "They do. I have. I came here to make things right." "By sneaking around the estate? By spying on me?" "I was trying t

Serena's Pov Something was wrong. I could feel it. The way Dimitrio avoided my eyes. The way he left the room when his phone rang. The way he whispered to Matteo in the hallway. He was keeping something from me. I waited two days before I confronted him. Two days of watching him pace. Two days of him coming to bed late and leaving early. Two days of silence. "Tell me what's going on," I said. We were in his study. He was reading a report. He didn't look up. "Nothing is going on." "Don't lie to me. I know something is wrong. You've been distant. Secretive." He set down the report. "I've been busy. There's a lot to deal with." "Busy with what? What are you hiding?" He looked at me. His face was tired. There were dark circles under his eyes. He hadn't been sleeping. "Sit down," he said. I didn't sit. I stood in front of his desk. My arms were crossed. "Just tell me." He sighed. "Carmine is in Rome." The words hit me like a slap. I felt my legs go weak. I grabbed the back o
