Chapter 178

Author: Gathered Light
The next day, the distant crash of waves, paired with the throbbing in Eugene's head, slowly pulled him back to consciousness.

He struggled to sit up, bracing himself with one arm on the bed, then abruptly turned his head. The moment he spotted Jacklyn, he shot to his feet.

He rushed over to her, blurting, "I'm sorry, Jackie. We were all so excited to finally be together. I got carried away and drank too much. Did you even get any sleep last night?"

Jacklyn sat before the mirror, absently patting her cheeks as she stared at her reflection.

"Yeah, I slept just fine," she said flatly.

Her voice gave nothing away. The sheer indifference in it made Eugene's stomach sink.

He looked down at himself, still in last night's clothes, reeking of smoke and booze so strongly that it made even his own stomach turn.

Eugene's gaze dropped, a flicker of disappointment clouding his eyes. He remembered how Jackie used to stay by his side, quietly taking care of him whenever he drank too much. But

Ever since Eugene found out Jacklyn had taken Emily's case, he'd become even more obsequious around her. When she told him not to bother her, he actually went the entire afternoon without saying a single word. But for Jacklyn, sharing a space with him was unbearable. Even when she didn't look his way, she could feel his gaze clinging to her, itching just beneath her skin. When dinnertime rolled around, Eugene suddenly rose from the couch. He drifted to her side, his voice soft and coaxing. "Jackie, you've been working all afternoon. Take a break."She wanted to say no, but one look at the stubborn glint in his eyes told her he'd just keep pushing until she caved.Still, something about him today felt different. She froze mid-motion, tilting her head slightly as she studied him."You've got something to say to me?" Jacklyn asked, her voice low and measured.Eugene smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he held her hand tightly. "Let's eat first. I got a message from Wade. Th

Jacklyn was careful not to overpromise. Frowning thoughtfully, she said, "I'd say over 80%."Emily gave a faint smile. "Well, then. I'm officially entrusting this treasure to you. Don't let me down, Jacklyn."Penelope gritted her teeth in fury as she watched the two of them go back and forth, acting as if she didn't even exist. She couldn't take it. Why was it that the moment Jacklyn appeared, she instantly became invisible?Jaw tight, she skimmed the design sketches. "80%? So you're admitting it won't be a perfect match? And since when does some designer know how to handle antiques?"Before Jacklyn could get a word in, Emily shot Penelope an impatient look and cut her off with a firm warning, "Enough. I gave this to Jacklyn because I trust her. No more restorations. Her design sketches stand as final."The reception room wasn't just the three of them. Several high-society guests were seated nearby. And although Emily hadn't raised her voice, the sharpness of her words still turn

Penelope reluctantly got up and moved to the opposite seat, shooting Jacklyn a venomous glare before sinking into it.What was she so smug about anyway? No antique conservators could solve the problem. There was no way Jacklyn had some miracle solution hidden up her sleeve.Once Jacklyn embarrassed herself in front of Emily, Penelope would step in with the real fix. And by then, Emily's attention would be hers and hers alone. The thought loosened the knot of resentment tightening in Penelope's chest. She was dying to hear whatever brilliant idea Jacklyn thought she had."Ms. Lopez, based on the crack patterns and the vase's distinctive style, I'd recommend using gold detailing to cover the crack."Jacklyn sat and opened her tablet. She pulled up an image of the vase, zoomed in, and pointed directly at the crack."Alabaster vases have a unique quality to them," she explained. "If we were to use gemstones, they'd only overshadow the vase's natural elegance. Instead of enhancing the

Penelope didn't realize what Jacklyn was up to until Eugene's scornful voice crackled through the phone."Penelope? She's nothing but a stupid, brainless, greedy woman. Jackie, how could she even come close to you? She's just a time-killer…"Penelope's face darkened with each word that came through the phone's recording. How could Eugene have said those things to Jacklyn? It had to be fake. It had to be!Rage and resentment churned inside her. She turned a searing glare on Jacklyn, sharp enough to flay her alive."Funny how Eugene's words don't quite match the story you've been bragging about," Jacklyn said with a smug grin. That look was the last straw. It pushed Penelope right over the edge. Her rage boiled over, and she slammed her palm on the table. "Nonsense! Gene would never say those things to you! I'll ask him myself!"She spun on her heel, ready to storm out."Go ahead." Jacklyn dabbed her lips with deliberate grace, her smile sugar-sweet, but her eyes cold as ice. "If

Seeing the earnest look on Liam's face, Jacklyn raised an eyebrow and asked, a touch skeptically, "Why?""Ms. Lopez has a temper. Even if your design sketches are flawless, she'll still lash out if the vase restoration isn't perfect," he said.Liam had a point, but Jacklyn wasn't so easily swayed. She lowered her gaze, letting his words sink in, then looked up and offered a faint smile. "Got it. I'll give it some serious thought."Then, shifting the subject, Jacklyn turned and glanced down the corridor behind her. "Your cabin's on this deck?"The Robertsons held a certain standing in Swanford. There was no way Liam would've been assigned a cabin on the same deck as the Lloyds unless he'd requested the cabin change after seeing her check in.It was clear. This was just his roundabout way of making sure she accepted his help.Liam didn't deny it. He simply smiled and said, "Get some rest."Jacklyn didn't press further. She stepped into the elevator, and as she hit the button for
