Chapter 3

Author: MeRuYash
“Mom, you should have seen Amber's presentation. It's a good thing Victor asked her and not some…peasant that would have disgraced us.” Lilith, his younger sister said with a chuckle.

“Yes. She is what this department has been lacking. The bosses will be thrilled. Can't wait till she's my daughter-in-law,” Stella beamed.

I rolled my eyes. At the same time all our phones buzzed with new gossip news.

‘Victor Kingswell and Amber Williamson expecting already?’

“Omg this was a week ago, Mom. Do you think Amber is pregnant with Victor's baby?”

I blinked at the pictures of Amber and Victor at an obstetrician, both staring deeply at a paper, most likely test results.

Something about her smile made my skin prickle. I shook my head. I was probably overthinking.

Amber was pregnant? Good for her.

The next morning I left the house before anyone else woke up.

At the mall, as I walked towards the restaurant where Robert and I would meet, a familiar voice stopped me.

“Avery. What a brilliant surprise,” Amber muttered with a bright smile.

I groaned.

“Why didn't you tell us you were coming shopping? Mom and I would have added you to our plans.”

I tightened my grip on my bag. Why was she everywhere!

Stella scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Amber darling. Why don't you come with me? You don't want to get contaminated by…pests roaming in places they don't fit into.”

I remained straight faced.

“Hi Amber. Hi Stella,” I greeted curtly. Their eyes widened. What? Surprised I didn't call you Mrs. Kingswell and try to kiss your ass as usual?

I turned to leave when Stella said with a sneer, “See how disrespectful she is, I don't know why Victor married this thing.”

I didn't flinch, just kept walking.

“Avery!” Amber called. I gritted my teeth and faced her, raising my brow.

“Why don't you join me and Mom? It'll be really eventful if you do.”

“Thank you,” I said flatly. “But I'd rather not.”

Amber pouted, and started taking steps towards me when Stella chimed in, “oh come on Amber, you know you're pregnant. Don't go around bad luck. We don't want anything happening to my grandbaby.”

An awkward silence fell on us. I clenched my fists till my knuckles turned white. Amber's eyes softened and she mouthed, “I'm sorry,” as Stella dragged her away.

I took a deep breath and walked into the jewelry store, browsing through the aisles while waiting for them to leave.

Once they did, I snuck out to meet Robert.

“Miss Ardent. Here is everything you asked for,” he said, handing me a sealed envelope. “I also added a card with some money in it. Please contact me anytime you need anything.”

I nodded with a small smile and left.

At the exit, an attendant stopped me. Two bulky security guards stood behind her.

“Excuse me ma'am. Can you come with us?”

My brows furrowed. “Why should I come with you?”

“Because ma'am,” she eyed me suspiciously.

“You stole jewelry from the jewelry store.”

I frowned. “I beg your pardon?”

For a moment I thought I was being pranked. But she didn't laugh. Nobody did.

A crowd started gathering.

“I didn't take anything. Sorry your store got robbed but it definitely wasn't me.”

“Then you won't mind if we check your bag?”

“Sure,” I agreed quickly. I had nothing to hide.

The attendant nodded to the security guys. They seized my bag and dumped the contents on the floor. I bent to pick up my belongings when I heard gasps. I looked up and froze. Dangling before me was a glamorous diamond necklace, from my bag.

“Oh my goodness such a pretty woman is a thief? How shameful,” an onlooker commented.

“What family could she have come from? This is such a big disgrace.”

I opened my mouth, but a different voice cut through.

“My goodness Avery. When I said shopping could be eventful I didn't mean you should take it literally.”

My head shot towards her. She shook her head and clicked her tongue. The whole “nice” personality from earlier was gone with the wind.

“I did not steal anything,” I said firmly.

“If you needed money you could have asked Victor or even me, Avery,” she murmured. “You didn't have to stoop so low.”

“Miss Williamson knows her?” someone asked.

“Sadly guys, I even considered her family. Not knowing she is just a pathetic good-for-nothing woman. Is this the kind of lesson you will teach your child—”

Smack!

My hand landed on her jaw.

Amber's head snapped to one side, causing gasps to echo in the mall.

“Avery! How dare you hurt my daughter,” Stella roared, coming from another direction.

“Oh I'm sorry,” I mocked. “It seems the same hands that slipped and stole that jewelry also slipped now. My apologies to everyone. How much is the jewelry?” I asked the store attendant.

“50000 dollars ma'am.”

I handed her the card Robert had given me.

Amber and Stella exchanged stunned looks.

I smirked. They didn't expect me to pay, huh?

I dumped the jewelry at Amber's feet. “Please…take that as an apology gift from me, Miss Williamson.”

I turned, flipped my hair and walked out with the broadest smile I could muster.

“W… What,” his voice and hands shook. “What do you mea?”“While you were having fun with Amber, I was losing my child. That's what I mean,” my voice cracked.“No. This isn't real,” he whispered. “It can't be.”“Except It is Victor. It's very real. I called you,” my lips trembled. “The one time I desperately needed you. You weren't there.”I blinked hard, trying to hold back the tears pooling in my eyes. “You ruined me Victor. You ruined me.”“Nooo!” Victor cried, gripping the paper in his hands. His knees hit the ground, his face as white as a sheet.  “I didn't know. God what have I done?”As His sobs echoed in the garden, I marched, like a zombie, to the tree with the knife I brought along.I cleared the fake bark we added, my hands brushing over our names and our drawings of a sparrow and dove.“I killed my child,” Victor cried behind me, his eyes staring at his hands like they were a murder weapon. My knife scraped over the symbol of our love, scratching everything off until only a

A figure stepped in front of me as I walked into the grand lobby at my company. Victor's hair was disheveled, as if he'd run his hand through it a million times. His eyes held dark circles, and his shoulders slumped.“Avery, can we talk?”It had been two days since Amber was exposed, and my phone had received almost 24 missed calls and 30 messages, each more desperate than the last.“You report to the manager of your department, who reports to my assistant who reports to me. Since when did that rule change?” I asked, walking past him and toward the elevator.Eyes and hushed whispers followed, as Victor ran after me. I lifted my hand to hit the button, when suddenly, he dropped to his knees before me.I closed my eyes, pinching the bridge of my nose.“Avery, Please, I need to talk to you.”“And I said—”“I have been a fool!” he cut me off. “A big fool Avery,”his body trembled as sobs left his throat.Stella rushed in at the same time, alongside his three siblings. I expected her to sco

Her car stopped in front of a private clinic. I waited a few minutes and followed in. The receptionist desk was empty. Amber's voice drifted from inside one of the two doors in the small cramped building.“There has to be something you can do.”I paused outside the door. A male answered, “I'm sorry Miss Williamson, you still can't conceive.”I almost choked on dry air. Amber was pregnant… So what did that mean? Unless… I covered my mouth and laughed.“So what do I do? Time is running out. Should I steal a baby” she whispered. The doctor hesitated. “I’m afraid that isn't advisable Miss Williamson. It could land you in serious trouble.”“Do I look like I care?” she snapped. “Fine, I will fake a miscarriage. Nobody will question that”A slow smile spread across my lips.Oh my sweet Amber. Did you just hand me a loaded gun?***My welcome party was in motion. I straightened my dress, a black knee-length figure-hugging gown, and leaned on Blake's arm.Across the room Amber stood, her desper

My office door slammed against the wall, the noise echoing in my ears.Victor stormed in without asking, just pure rage in his eyes. His tie was loose, his messy hair falling over his face.“Avery!” he yelled. My pen didn't stop writing on the file I was working on.“Miss ardent!” he barked, marching to my desk. Robert stepped forward to block him. “What has gotten into you. Why would you do that.”“Robert,” I called calmly, still signing my documents.“Yes, Miss Ardent.”“Mr Kingswell seems to be a little lost. Care to explain what he wants to hear.”“Sure. Mr Kingswell you have been —”“Shut up and stay out of our business,” Victor roared. “Avery, I am talking to you.”I finally looked at him. “Alright. What is it?”“What is it? Avery, our house has been sealed.”“So?”Victor reddened like lava. “What do you mean by ‘so’? Avery, that house holds all our memories. Don't you care?”I massaged my temples, letting out a deep breath. “Victor. There's a new manager. The house belongs to th

Marcus's fist and jaw tightened. “Do you want to repeat—”I caught his wrist and shook my head. “Don't.”“But she called you a curse!” he growled.“I heard her. I’ve got this,” I winked.I faced Stella, my lips curled into a big smile. “Do you get rewarded for every time you call me names?”Stella rolled her eyes. “Am I wrong? You shouldn't be around our bosses. You want to ruin their lives like you ruined my son's?”“Tsk tsk tsk Stella. You make me laugh. Either way,” I drawled out. “I hope you enjoy the news your children and beloved Amber will bring to you soon.”She frowned. “What are you talking about?”“Mom!” Lilith called rushing out of the boardroom, tears running down her cheeks.I passed a smirk to Stella, held Marcus's outstretched arm and we walked off.By the time we reached my office, the entire building was buzzing with excitement and gossip.“She really was the heiress? Can you believe the first thing she did was demote her husband and fire his siblings?”I rolled my ey

I walked right after her into the boardroom. Victor was about to hug Amber but frowned when he saw me.He stepped aside and walked towards me.“My darling, what are you—”I brushed past him and sat down.“Avery,” he whispered, sitting beside me. “You're not supposed to be here. You are not an employee anymore.”“That is correct, victor,” I smiled. Before he could say anything else, the door opened.Four men marched in, power radiating off them in waves.Everyone stood up and bowed, except one person.I sat cross-legged like I owned the place, because I did. Someone nudged me. I looked up to see Victor glaring at me.“Sirs,” he said, bowing. “Please forgive her. She's just had an accident and is not thinking clearly.”The room fell dead silent. My brothers glared at him like he had murdered their beloved pet. Victor shifted and lowered his head.“Everyone,” Robert announced calmly. “Allow us to introduce the company's new majority shareholder and President, your new boss...”The room pa
