Lisa’s POV

The sound of the prison door echoed down the hallway as the guard guided me out and led me into the visiting room. My heart raced, a rare hope and dread twisting in my gut. It had been weeks since I’d seen anyone from my family, my parents had refused to come too, and the orange prison jumpsuit wear felt like a second skin now, scratchy and humiliating.

When I spotted Grandfather sitting at the scarred wooden chair, a wave of relief washed over me. He was the only one who could fix this nightmare right?

“Lisa,” he said, his voice calm but his eyes distant as I sat down across from him. The guard stood by the door, arms crossed, watching us. Grandfather’s face was cold, his jaw set in that familiar sad line, but there was no warmth in his expression, no reassuring smile too.

“Grandfather, thank God you’re here,” I choked out, leaning forward, my hands chained to the table rattling slightly. “You have to get me out. This place is hell.”

He sighed, shaking his head. Before he

  • Second Chance At Rebirth: Beneath The Ashes   Chapter 151

Christine’s POVIt was the day of the first hearing at the court. My body had healed enough to leave the wheelchair behind, though the bruises still left a faint mark on my skin that reminded me of the hell I’d survived. I stood in front of the full-length mirror in my apartment, adjusting the lapels of my tailored cream blazer. The outfit was professional. My auburn hair was pulled into a sleek chignon, and I applied a touch of red lipstick, the color bold against my pale complexion. I needed to look like the Christine the world expected, untouchable and unbreakable. Inside, my nerves churned, but I grabbed my purse. Today, Francis would face the consequences of his actions. The courthouse loomed ahead as my car pulled up, imposing under the gray September sun sky. Evelyn sat beside me, her tablet glowing with notes she’d been reviewing all morning. “You’ve got this, Christine,” she said, her voice steady as she squeezed my hand. Her eyes held a fierce loyalty that comforted me. “We

Christine’s POV“I’ve got a good story for you. A real one. Zane figured out Francis’s plans, tracked him down and brought the cops to save me from that kidnapping. He’s not the man the tabloids make him out to be. Yes, he’s got… unusual tastes, but that’s not what defines him. He’s changed, Marcus. He’s a good person, and I need you to make sure the world knows it.”On the other end, Marcus let out a low whistle. “Christine, this is a scoop and a half. A hero angle with a redemption arc? The press will lap it up. I’ll make sure Zane’s name comes out spotless. give me a few days, and those rumors will be buried.”“Good,” I replied, a flicker of satisfaction warming my chest. “Make it quick. I want every trace of that garbage scrubbed from social media, tabloids, everything. You know what to do.”“You got it,” Marcus said, his tone brimming with confidence. “I’ll keep you posted. Hang in there, Christine.”I was about to respond when a soft knock on the door interrupted me. A nurse pok

Christine’s POVNext day…The hospital room is quiet now, save for the soft hum of the air conditioning and grandmother Eleanor left a short while ago to fetch more tea, and Evelyn stepped out to make a call, leaving me alone with my thoughts. The door swings open as my eyes fall on my parents, Lilith and Gregory, stepping inside. My mother’s cold and piercing eyes betray the storm brewing inside her. My father follows, his gray suit impeccable as always, but his face is a mask of disdain, his jaw tight as always. They don’t rush to my side, don’t ask how I’m feeling. Instead, they stand at the foot of my bed.“Christine,” my mother begins, each syllable dripping with accusation. “Look at you. Lying here, battered and broken, and for what? All of this could have been avoided.”I blink, my fingers tightening around the edge of the blanket. “Don’t start please” My voice is hoarse, but I force it to stay steady, though my chest tightens with the weight of their gaze.My father steps for

  • Second Chance At Rebirth: Beneath The Ashes   Chapter 148

Christine’s POV“I’ll have my leave now.” Says grandfather as the door clicks shut behind him, and the room feels lighter, as if his presence had been a weight pressing down on me. The faint pain of the IV needle in my arm reminds me of my fragility, but I push the thought aside. Grandmother Eleanor stays. She adjusts the blanket over my legs, covering them properly, her lips pressed into a small, reassuring smile.“Christine, darling,” she says, her voice a soft filled of concern and love, “you must be starving. Let me get you something to eat.” She doesn’t wait for my response, already moving toward the small table in the corner of the room where a tray of food waits, covered with a silver cloche. She lifts the cloche, revealing a steaming bowl of chicken noodle soup, a small plate of buttered toast, and a glass of fresh orange juice. The aroma of the soup, warm and savory, fills the air, and my stomach rumbles in response, betraying how long it’s been since I’ve eaten anything subs

Christine’s POVI stare at Zane with no words. The faint beeping of the heart monitor punctuates the silence between us. A dinner date... My mind reels, struggling to process the simplicity of his request after everything we’ve been through, after everything I’d done to him. His eyes held mine but there’s a softness there as his lips curved into a smile.“Is that all you want?” I ask, my voice still raspy from days of dehydration and screaming into duct tape. My throat tightens as I force the words out. “I thought we were enemies, Zane.”He leans back in the chair, his broad shoulders relaxed. A slow, almost playful smile curves his lips again, and it sends an unexpected flutter through my chest. “Enemies?” he says, his voice low and teasing. “Maybe we were, Christine. But things change. You’re sitting here, alive, because of me. Maybe it’s time you rethink that label.”I swallow, my fingers curling into the thin hospital blanket. His confidence is disarming, and I hate how it makes m

  • Second Chance At Rebirth: Beneath The Ashes   Chapter 146

Christine’s POVThe door was pushed open, and the light reflection blinding glare sliced through my sight. My wrists ached, ties that had bitten into my skin for days. The tape over my mouth stifled my screams, but my chest heaved with shallow, panicked breaths as the officers stormed in. Their voices were barking orders as I squinted against the light, my vision blurry from exhaustion and tears, but I felt the shift in the air, the chaos of rescue replacing the suffocating dread of captivity inside me.“Over here!” a female officer called, her tone urgent. She rushed to my side, her gloved hands working quickly to cut the ties binding me to the chair. The plastic snapped, and my arms fell limp, hurting as blood rushed back into them. She peeled the duct tape from my mouth with care, and I gasped. My body trembled, not just from the cold but from the overwhelming relief that I was no longer alone in this nightmare.“Ma’am, you’re safe now,” the officer said softly, her eyes meeting
