Chapter 4

Penulis: Anonymous
Caroline shot Reginald a disdainful glance. "Prince Reginald, no one knows my sister's body better than I do. Whether she can even conceive is still a question, and even if she does, the best she'll manage is a red-finned mer-child."

The Mer-King said nothing to scold her. After all, he valued heirs above all else. He only chuckled lightly and dismissed us with a wave.

Reginald did not want me to bear that humiliation. His face darkened as he exclaimed, "Princess Caroline, please mind your words!"

Caroline was not afraid of him in the slightest. She beamed triumphantly and replied, "Am I wrong? That belly of hers is only fit to birth red-fins! Lowly, weak, and useless creatures!"

She pressed a hand protectively over her own bump.

"Whereas I'm carrying not one, but two black-finned mer-children. If anything happens to me, none of you could bear that responsibility!"

Her arrogance was based on her past experience. With her new life seemingly playing out similarly to the last, she was certain it would go her way.

In my previous life, I had conceived two black-finned mer-children just three days after consummating my marriage with Sheldon.

Caroline had not conceived until six months later, and even then, it was only a red-finned offspring.

However, despite her status as a Pregnancy Maiden, she was never strong enough to produce black-fins.

I smiled calmly. "Then, I wish you many children and a long life, dear sister."

I was not upset. Not in the least.

In fact, I had a feeling Sheldon would give her quite the lesson once they were behind closed doors.

Just as expected, as soon as Reginald and I returned to our estate, I overheard gossip fluttering through the fish around the gates.

Apparently, after Caroline and Sheldon returned home and entangled with each other with great enthusiasm, she began to bleed severely.

It was premature labor.

Human and merfolk births were not quite the same. I had studied all of it carefully once I became a Pregnancy Maiden.

The Mer-King, afraid something might go wrong, summoned me personally to assist.

The fish-doctors did not dare look too closely, but I saw enough.

Her body was torn. It was worse than mine had been during my traumatic first birth in my previous life.

It was only the beginning.

It would get worse. Much worse.

Caroline gasped between contractions, her face pale but full of fire, "Celine, watch closely. See how I give birth to black-finned mer-children! Power, wealth, centuries of life… They're all mine this time! Hahaha!"

She was delirious, desperate to birth the babies and prove her worth.

However, Caroline and Sheldon had been far too rough. Her birth canal was torn in several places, and blood was everywhere.

Four long hours passed before the first child was finally pulled from her womb.

Its tail fin was a brilliant, unmistakable red color.

I made sure to cradle the child gently in my arms and brought it right to her bedside.

Beaming, I said warmly, "Caroline, don't fall asleep yet. Look, your little one's already here! He looks so much like his father, doesn't he?"

Caroline's eyes widened in horror, and her body jerked.

"No, no, it's not possible! This isn't my baby! I was carrying black-fins! This wretched thing, this worthless, filthy thing, there's no way it came from me! You! This is your doing! You were jealous, and you switched them!"

Caroline thrashed around and screamed, "There's still another! Doctor, bring me my other baby! If anything's wrong with my black-finned child, I'll have your heads for it!"

The poor doctor turned pale at her words.

"P-Princess, just a bit more. The second baby's almost here!"

Soon, it arrived.

Panting, weak, Caroline clutched the blankets. "Quick! Show me my black-finned mer-child!"

The doctor wiped the sweat from his brow and swaddled the child.

He then brought it to her.

"No! This can't be true!" Caroline screamed.

She stared at the red-finned mer-child in the doctor's hand and passed out on the spot.

Everyone had assumed, thanks to Caroline's bragging and insistence, that she was carrying black-finned heirs. At most, they expected silver or purple fins.

However, no one had expected two red-fins in a row.

In merfolk society, red-fins were the lowest of the low. Fragile, weak, and worthless.

They were seen as slaves and would be a shameful stain in royal bloodlines. Even commoners wept in disgrace if they gave birth to one.

There Caroline was, having given birth to two, born into the royal family.

It was nothing short of a scandal—the greatest joke the merfolk had seen in generations.

Sheldon left with a face as dark as storm clouds."Mother, Father, are you both alright?"Our babies quickly surrounded us, their little voices brimming with worry. They pressed close, eyes wide, tails twitching.I gently touched each of their heads, one by one."I'm fine," I said softly.Once they were reassured and sent off to play, Reginald turned to me, his eyes red, his expression full of quiet grievance.I sighed. Finally, I told him everything.Every secret I had carried, every truth I had buried in the depths of memory—I told him everything.Reginald no longer felt jealous. He simply held me in silence, wrapping his arms around me.Then, he murmured, "Celine, you've suffered so much. This life, I swear, I will love you well. If anyone dares lay a finger on you, I'll fight them to the death."I wrapped my arms around his waist and smiled before I replied, "Alright then."Life with Reginald was relaxed, peaceful, and filled with laughter, warmth, and healing. However,

Caroline was taken back home.Since she was utterly useless, Sheldon did not bother pretending anymore. He locked her up like livestock, knocked her up on purpose, and tormented her for months. Then, just as she was about to give birth, he forced her to swallow a special abortion drug.Once it was done, he started all over again. Her belly was swollen once more, and the cycle of cruelty repeated until her body was no longer her own, just a vessel for endless torment.Time became meaningless.Eventually, Sheldon's other consorts began falling pregnant. One bore a silver-finned heir. Another, a purple-finned baby. Even a blue-tail was considered respectable. However, not one gave birth to a red-fin.Caroline's red-finned babies became the lowest of the low, and so did she.Her days were filled with suffering so severe that death would have been a kindness. Not long after, I became pregnant again.Reginald placed his hand gently on my belly, his expression filled with distres

After just a few months, Caroline looked like a ghost of her former self—hollow-cheeked, her frame thinner than ever. When she heard what the others were saying, her face instantly turned bloodless. With Sheldon standing nearby, she did not dare scream or throw a fit. All she could do was mutter in a dazed, broken whisper, like some cursed mantra."No… No, this is impossible. She's not supposed to be the one to birth black-finned mer-babies… It should've been me! She's with Reginald… There's no way she could give birth to black-fins. It should've been red-finned trash!"One of the concubines recently brought in for Sheldon sneered at her, full of disdain."What an idiot. She can't even carry properly and still has the nerve to curse Princess Celine?"Even Sheldon's face looked ugly.He had long been preparing to fight for the crown prince title, and he had believed Caroline when she swore she had rare, superior breeding potential—that she would carry black-finned heirs. After f

Reginald had a full set of jewelry crafted from pearls just for me.He even wove shark-silk himself into loose robes that fit my growing belly, adorning them with bright, polished pearls. The little fish and lower-ranked merfolk loved to gather around me, always chattering about whatever amusing gossip they heard from outside.Later, they even started a musical, putting on full performances for me and Reginald.By the end, everyone was laughing—not at the story, but at their overly dramatic faces and ridiculous expressions. It was too funny not to.Once my belly grew round, everyone treated me like I was made of glass—tiptoeing around me, terrified they might hurt the little one inside.Reginald, who watched my stomach grow larger day by day, was always amazed. He often leaned against me, pressing his ear gently to my belly, eyes wide with wonder."He's moving… I think I just felt him move!" he whispered in awe.The little fish and merfolk immediately chimed in with unfiltered

Back then, the Mer-King believed Caroline because she had gotten pregnant so soon after arriving.Everyone was glad. The Mer-King, too, chose to be amused rather than suspicious. He was a willing fool, hoping for joy. However, when Caroline sneered that my womb did not hold a child, it finally made him pause. The Mer-King fell silent, then slowly said, "Since Princess Celine is unable to bear children, perhaps it's fitting she raise them. These two infants, whatever their fin color, are still royal blood. Let this fulfill your yearning for motherhood."Caroline thought it was because she carried black-finned children. She truly believed the Mer-King still favored her.She turned to me and added smugly, "Celine, you're a failed Pregnancy Maiden. These two mongrels suit you best."I could not help but laugh."Why is it that you keep harping on about me being barren? Could it be you're afraid the child I give birth to might outrank yours?"The flicker of panic in her eyes vanished

  • Second Chance at Love and Life   Chapter 7

The two mer-babies were dumped at my feet, wide-eyed and pitiful.I knew better than anyone that there was nothing pitiful about them.Red-finned merfolk were weak in both body and mind. Soft, slow, and gullible, they were easy prey in a cruel world.Everyone's first instinct around them was the same—they were harmless and defenseless. However, they were not ordinary red-fins.They were the spawn of Sheldon—cruel and heartless—and they were born bad.In my previous life, I had carried black-finned children. Proud, arrogant, and dismissive of authority, they helped Sheldon torment me, treating me like I was nothing. The red-finned children, twisted by rejection and hatred of their own mother, would only turn out more vicious, more dangerous.Reginald's face flushed with fury.He had never seen such shameless behavior in his life.Holding me tightly, he mumbled in frustration, "Thank goodness I met you instead. Otherwise, I would've been driven mad by her."I stroked his hair
