Chapter 2

Author: Cher
Isabella's words cut into me like a blade.

In my past life, her words had shattered my resolve, driving me into silence and surrender. But this time, I would not repeat the same mistake.

"Cold and heartless?" I turned to face the pack. "No. I am simply fighting for my own future."

Alpha Arthur's voice rumbled through the hall. "Elena, Victoria speaks with reason. You are too emotional now. This is not the time to make such a decision. I will grant you three days to reconsider—"

"There's no need." I cut him off. "Alpha Arthur, my decision will not change. Liam is dead, and I will not sacrifice the rest of my life for a corpse."

Victoria reeled as if struck, staggering back several steps. "You… how dare you speak of my son that way?"

"I am only speaking the truth. If Liam truly loved me, he would never want my soul chained to endless suffering. He would want me to find happiness again."

Liam's face darkened as he strode toward me. "Elena, you've gone too far!"

"Too far?" I laughed coldly. "Tell me, where were you when Liam died on the battlefield?"

His expression faltered, panic flashing in his eyes before anger smothered it.

"I was commanding the rescue at the rear! If not for me, even Liam's body would have been lost!"

"Is that so?" I gave him a pointed look, my voice laced with irony. "Then I suppose I should thank you… Jacob."

Luna Victoria seized the moment, her voice sharp. "Elena, I will ask you one last time. Do you truly mean to betray the mate bond you shared with my son?"

I met her gaze steadily. "I have betrayed nothing. The Moon Goddess herself decreed that when one mate dies, the other may choose to sever the bond. I am choosing life."

Then I turned to Arthur. "Alpha, I request that my plea for a new mate be made openly before the pack."

Liam's voice cracked in alarm. "You can't—!"

Gasps rippled through the hall. Such a request was unheard of in wolf pack history.

Arthur's face was solemn, but he nodded. "Elena, since this is your decision, I will honor it. However, the alliance between our two packs still stands. If you wish to choose a new mate, it must be from among our wolves."

I lifted my chin, scanning the sea of faces before me. Shame burned in my chest, but I forced my voice to ring clear.

"Who among you is willing to stand beside me, before the Moon Goddess, and become my mate?"

Silence.

One by one, heads bowed, avoiding my gaze.

A hollow ache spread through me. Had even the Moon Goddess abandoned me?

Liam's mocking voice slithered through the quiet. "See, Elena? No one would ever choose a cold, heartless woman like you. Give it up."

His certainty churned my stomach.

Then, from the back of the hall, a deep voice rang out, "I will."

Every head turned.

Kael stepped forward, each stride steady and commanding. The strongest warrior of the Black Moon Pack—silent, formidable—now stood at my side, his presence dominating.

Victoria's eyes widened in outrage. "Kael, do you even know what you're saying?"

"I know exactly what I'm saying. Elena is the purest bloodline of Silver Creek. She deserves protection, not the chains of false morality."

Liam's rage boiled over. "Kael, don't be a fool! Her mate has barely died, and she already seeks another. You would still want a woman like her?"

"Too much?" Kael's eyes were like ice as they met his. "All I see is a woman fighting for her freedom. Liam is dead. Must Elena be buried with him?"

He turned and bowed respectfully to Arthur. "Alpha, I am willing to claim Elena as my mate."

Isabella rushed forward, her voice trembling. "Kael, you don't understand. Elena—"

"I understand perfectly," Kael cut her off. "Liam's last words were to entrust Elena to me. I am only fulfilling that promise."

The revelation struck like a thunderclap. The two had indeed fought in the same place. If Liam had entrusted Elena to him, her choice was beyond reproach.

But I knew the truth. Those words were Kael's invention. In my past life, Liam had never spoken those words.

Arthur fell silent, thoughtful. At last, he nodded. "If Liam entrusted her to you, then Elena's request must be honored."

Kael dropped to one knee before me. His eyes, dark and steady, locked on mine.

"Elena, before the Moon Goddess, will you accept me as your mate? I will protect you until my final breath."

My heart trembled. His gaze held no hesitation, no deceit.

Without thinking, I nodded. "Yes."

Liam had no ground left to stand on.

That very moment, Kael and I signed the Mating Decree.

Arthur raised a weary hand. "Enough. They have suffered enough pain. So let it be. I am old, and now, with one son lost, I can no longer bear the weight of Alpha. Three days from now, we will hold the Alpha Succession Ceremony. Jacob shall be named the new Alpha."

Jacob. My sister's mate. Now Liam's stolen name.

Inside, my thoughts turned dark. In my past life, even until my death, Liam never ascended as Alpha.

Yet in this life, everything had come so much sooner.

As I left the hall, Liam brushed past me. His voice was low, venomous, meant for my ears alone.

"Elena… you will pay for what you did today."

At some point, exhaustion and anxiety had pulled me into unconsciousness.Yet when I opened my eyes again, I was not in the familiar comfort of my room. I was on the Black Moon Pack's altar.Thick silver chains bound my limbs, holding me completely immobile. And before me stood Liam, his face twisted in madness, eyes glowing red with fury."Finally awake, my dearest Elena," he crooned, his deranged laughter echoing across the empty altar. The area was deserted, the wind howling through the night and whipping my hair, sending chills down my spine.I scanned the altar. It was the sacred site for the Alpha Succession Ceremony, etched with dark runes that radiated a sinister aura."You've lost your mind!" I struggled, but the chains suppressed not just my body—they sapped my strength as well."Mind? No, I've never been this lucid," Liam said, raising a sacrificial dagger that pulsed with malevolent energy. Ancient runes were carved along its blade."This is the legendary artifact,

The Black Moon Pack descended into unprecedented chaos. The Alpha heir had fallen in battle, and his younger brother's impersonation cast doubt across the pack. Some argued that Liam should immediately face the pack's harshest punishment. Others insisted that, as the only one of Alpha blood, he deserved a chance at redemption.Meanwhile, Kael and I enjoyed a rare moment of peace at his estate. The sun dipped low in the sky as we lay together on the bed, and I could hardly bear the weight of his passion.I gasped, "No more… please… I can't… really can't…"For an entire day, I had barely left the bed.Kael's hand brushed over the mate mark on the back of my neck, his own imprint lingering there. Yet his voice held a note of uncertainty."Elena… may I ask you something?""What is it?" I turned to face him."Am I… better at making you happy than he ever was?"I froze. I had never expected this fearless warrior on the battlefield to reveal such vulnerability now."Kael…""I know

"Elena! Don't you dare slander me!" Isabella snapped without a second thought, her body trembling, her eyes a mixture of guilt and fury."I'm your sister," she said. "If I am not of pure Silver Creek blood, then what are you?"She glanced at Liam, a shadow of resentment and despair in her gaze. Then she hurried to Arthur, trying to defend herself."Alpha, I had no idea Liam was impersonating Jacob," she said, her voice trembling. "If anyone should be punished, punish him! I knew nothing!"Liam lifted his head in disbelief, his eyes swimming with the pain of betrayal.I let out a cold, bitter smile. In my previous life, I had learned too late that Liam had long harbored feelings for Isabella. He had deemed her gentle and beautiful, and though he had only met her a few times at pack gatherings, he had already become obsessed. After impersonating Jacob, he had sent her countless precious wolf relics. Yet the mate he had yearned for so deeply had abandoned him without mercy at the m

"No… this can't be…" Arthur staggered backward, barely able to stay on his feet, his eyes wide with disbelief.Victoria let out a blood-curdling scream before collapsing, overwhelmed by the shock. The entire altar was swallowed by a deathly silence, broken only by the howl of the wind.Liam, seeing his deception exposed, stared at me in disbelief. "Elena… how did you know?"Then, almost muttering to himself, he tried to justify, "I handled everything perfectly. Anyone who knew the truth… I eliminated them. I even used a special method to hide the mate bond between us."I swallowed my anger and tears, speaking softly. "How could I not recognize you?"After all, we were destined mates, bonded under the witness of the Moon Goddess. Even the faintest bond was enough for me to sense him.I had known Liam since childhood—Arthur himself had once said that no one knew Liam better than I did.My love for him had always been wholehearted, absolute."Liam!" Arthur's voice trembled with f

The hall fell into a stunned silence. All eyes were fixed on Liam and Isabella, waiting for an explanation.I exhaled and spoke. "It's useless. Give it up."Sweat rolled down Liam's forehead. "There must be a mistake in the ritual! The moonstone… it could be contaminated!""Or perhaps…" His gaze darted anxiously to the elders. "Has someone sabotaged the ceremony?"Whispers rippled through the crowd. Some glanced at me suspiciously, others stared at the still-dim moonstone.I rose slowly. My voice carried clearly across the altar."Both of them are impostors. How could they ever earn the Moon Goddess's blessing?"A silence like death fell over the crowd.Kael looked at me, slightly surprised, but there was no doubt in his expression—only puzzlement.Liam's eyes blazed with fury, mixed with a flicker of guilt and fear. From the floor, Isabella rushed toward me, crying as she wailed before the assembly."It's Elena! A gilded invitation arrived at Kael's estate."The Black Moon Pack cordially invites Ms. Elena and Mr. Kael to attend the Alpha Succession Ceremony."I looked at the invitation and let out a cold laugh. So, Liam wanted to flaunt his victory before the entire pack.On the appointed day, I entered the ceremonial grounds with my hand resting on Kael's arm. The entire pack was dressed in festive finery. The Moon Goddess's altar, adorned with flowers and moonstones, radiated solemn sanctity. All eyes immediately shifted toward us."Elena actually came with her new mate.""How could she treat Liam this way?"On the high dais, Liam sat clad in the black ceremonial robes symbolizing the Alpha's authority. The moment his gaze landed on me, a flash of malice glinted in his eyes.He rose to his feet and declared, "Elena, I am touched that you came to witness my succession."The hall fell into silence, every breath held in anticipation of the clash."I only came to watch a clown perform,
