LYRA’S POV
My father turned to Callia and softened his tone. “Callia, we need to honor the Beta’s presence. This discussion will be tabled for later.”
Callia pressed her lips into a thin line but nodded. As she turned to leave, she shot me a smirk—like she was flaunting how well our father treated her.
My fists clenched.
I wanted to wipe that smug look off her face, but my father’s firm hand on my shoulder stopped me.
“Lyra, let’s go.”
I exhaled sharply. “Fine.” I strode towards the door, but just as I reached the threshold, my father hesitated.
I turned back. My mother stood frozen, arms crossed over her chest.
My father exhaled. “We have to honor the Beta’s presence as a family. It wouldn’t be right to go without you.”
A bitter laugh almost escaped me. Family? Now he remembers we’re supposed to be a family?
My mother wiped her tears and nodded wordlessly before walking ahead.
We entered the grand hall. The Beta of the Alpha King stood in the center. I forced a polite smile as I curtseyed. My father stepped forward, clasping the Beta’s hand.
“Beta Edmund,” my father said. “An honor to welcome you to our pack.”
“The honor is mine, Alpha Garrick,” Beta Edmund replied, nodding. His gaze shifted to my mother, then to me. “Luna Eva. Lady Lyra.”
I lifted my chin but remained silent. My mother stood stiff beside me.
Beta Edmund wasted no time. “I am here on behalf of Alpha King Valrik to deliver an important decree.” A pause. “The criteria for the Queen Luna Selection have changed.”
My father’s brows furrowed. “Oh? How so?”
“All she-wolves of Alpha bloodline with mates are now required to participate.”
I frowned. That… that didn’t make sense. The Queen Luna Selection had always been for unmated she-wolves. Why change the rules now?
Before I could think, the words left my mouth: “Why?”
Upon hearing that, my father stiffened and my mother paled.
‘No one questions the Alpha King’s orders. Let alone ask why.’ My mother mind-linked to me.
I swallowed hard. Beta Edmund’s gaze landed on me and I expected him to take offense but instead, he answered.
“Because the Moon Goddess’s will is not as simple as we once believed.”
I blinked.
“We’ve discovered that some she-wolves have more than one mate,” he continued. “Meaning a she-wolf with a mate could still be the Alpha King’s fated mate.”
My stomach twisted. What? That was impossible. Or at least… it had always been assumed to be.
“This revelation changes everything,” he went on. “The Alpha King has declared that all she-wolves—mated or not—must present themselves at the Queen Luna Selection.” His eyes darkened slightly. “Defiance is not an option.”
An hour ago, I would’ve fought tooth and nail to refuse. I couldn’t bear to be separated from Rowan. But suddenly, something clicked. I had a plan.
I lifted my gaze. “Only Alpha’s daughters can participate, correct?”
Beta Edmund nodded. “Yes, only those of Alpha blood.”
“And what about a she-wolf with half-Alpha blood? Could she also take part?”
A pause. Then another nod. “If she is of Alpha lineage, she must present herself.”
A slow smile curled on my lips and I saw my father’s jaw tighten. He knew exactly where I was going.
“I have a half-sister,” I said sweetly. “Callia.”
“Then Callia must join, mustn’t she?” I tilted my head toward my father. “She’s not exempt, is she?”
For a long moment, my father said nothing. Then, he turned to a guard, “Fetch Callia.”
The guard saluted and left immediately.
Callia had ripped my entire world apart. Now? Now she’d feel the pain of being separated from Rowan too. It wouldn’t compare to the agony inside me, but it was a start.
The doors opened and she and Rowan entered with their hands linked. I felt my stomach twist, but I steeled myself.
Both bowed to the Beta.
The Beta faced Callia. “You are Callia, daughter of Alpha Garrick?”
She hesitated. “…Yes.”
“Then you will be joining the Queen Luna Selection.”
Callia’s eyes widened. “What?” Her fingers tightened around Rowan’s hand. “That can’t be right! The Selection is for unmated she-wolves.”
“Is he your mate?” Beta Edmund asked, nodding to Rowan.
“No, but I have a boyfriend. Rowan is my—”
“The Alpha King demands all she-wolves of Alpha blood participate, mated or not,” the Beta interrupted. “And in your case, even with a boyfriend.”
Callia paled. She turned sharply toward me with fury in her eyes, “This is your doing, isn’t it? You threw me in!”
“You wanted to be acknowledged as part of the Alpha bloodline, didn’t you?” I clapped mockingly. “Well, here you go—your first acknowledgement. Congratulations, Callia.”
Her fists trembled, but after a long moment, she muttered through gritted teeth, “Fine. I will join.”
The Beta nodded. “Then that will be all.”
With that, he turned and strode out.
As soon as the Beta left, Rowan turned to me with anger.
“You,” he spat. “You evil, conniving woman! You did this on purpose!”
I let out a soft laugh. “Oh, Rowan. I’m just getting started.”
“This is why I chose Callia over you! You’re bitter, spiteful, and cruel. She’s nothing like you—she’s kind and gentle!”
I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could, Rowan’s voice rang out, sharp as a blade.
“I, Rowan of the Blue Moon Pack, reject you, Lyra, as my mate!”
JOAZ’S POVThe throne room slowly emptied. I stayed where I was, slouched lazily against a pillar, watching it all with hooded eyes.Valrik’s rage had practically scorched the walls. He’d stormed out already, heading straight for the Misty Forest with half the palace guards at his heels.Good. Let him tear through the trees like a madman.Seeing as he had purposely left me out of the hunt, I had other plans.Once the hall was empty and silence fully settled in, I pushed off the pillar, hands stuffed deep into the pockets of my black coat, and wandered toward the guest wing.I knew where she’d be. I knew because rats always returned to the same holes. The corridor was deserted as I walked through and when I found the right door, I didn’t hesitate.I turned the handle slowly, slipped inside, and shut it behind me with a soft click. The room was dark, only faint moonlight bleeding through the thin curtains. She wasn't around. So I would wait. I leaned casually against the wall beside th
VALRIK’S POV“Where is Lyra!?” I yelled, asking for the umpteenth time. Having summoned an emergency meeting, I sat on my throne, and kneeling in front of me were the palace maids, soldiers, even a few Queen Luna candidates, their foreheads pressed to the ground. Some of the maids were on the verge of tears. A few soldiers could barely keep their bodies from collapsing completely.Only Joaz wasn't kneeling, lounging lazily against a pillar with his arms crossed over his chest. Fucking bastard. He should be on his knees too.Lyra had been missing for hours. Hours.I’d already torn the entire palace apart looking for her. And still—nothing.Igor roared inside me, thrashing against my control, nearly snapping free.It took everything I had to keep him chained down. Because if he came out in this state, he'd tear everyone apart. “M-My King,” one of the palace maids whispered from where she kneeled, “This morning, Miss Lyra went to look for Miss Mabel in her room. But Miss Mabel wasn’t
VALRIK’S POVMy wolf snarled inside me, pacing, snapping his teeth, restless as hell.‘Claim her. Take her. Mark her.’ The words never left me. Day and night, Igor made sure they pounded through my skull like war drums, louder, more urgent with every hour that passed. But I couldn't.I wouldn't.Not while Sybil was still alive. I slammed my fist into the stone wall beside my bed, cracking it down the center.Still, it wasn’t enough to quiet the beast. Two fucking days. Two days of nothing but madness, so much I could barely think straight. And no matter how hard I tried to fight it, I could still feel her. That girl. Her scent, her voice, her taste in the back of my throat.Goddess help me, I was losing control.I dragged a hand through my hair and barked out a sharp order through the mind-link to my Beta.“Bring me someone. Now. Anyone. Attractive. Willing. I don't care.”If Igor wouldn’t calm the fuck down, I’d find a way to force him to.I sat on the edge of the bed, shirtless, l
LYRA'S POVThe moment I saw Brenna standing above me, smirking with her arms folded across her chest, it hit me.This was a trap.I glared up at her through the pain clouding my vision. But the anger bubbling inside me burned hotter than the agony.“You planned this,” I spat, “You set me up!”Brenna didn’t even blink at the accusation. She just laughed. Her friends, clustered around her like a pack of hyenas, chuckled along. None of them looked remotely surprised to see me bleeding and broken at the bottom of a pit.Brenna leaned casually against the trunk of a nearby tree, “Don’t bother yelling,” she said with a shrug, “I tricked the border guards into leaving their posts. No one’s coming to save you.”Her smile widened, “You’re either gonna starve down there… or get torn apart by something worse.”“Where’s Mabel?” I gritted my teeth, “She wasn’t in her room this morning. What did you do to her?”“You don’t get to ask questions,” she snapped, “Worry about yourself, slut.”And witho
LYRA’S POVI woke up the next morning excited to find Mabel, to see if she was still up for training together like we promised. After freshening up, I stopped by her room first, knocking lightly. When no answer came, I tried the handle—unlocked. I poked my head inside, but the room was empty. No sign of her anywhere.A maid walked by, balancing a basket of clean towels on her hip.I caught her attention. “Excuse me,” I said. “Have you seen Mabel?”The maid blinked, then smiled. “Miss Mabel went for a run in the forest this morning,” she said kindly. “If you’re looking for her, you might want to check there.”“Thank you,” I said quickly and hurried down the hallway and slipped outside. I made my way into the forests and after a while, I started to call out for her. “Mabel?” I called out, cupping my hands around my mouth. “It’s Lyra! Are you out here?”Only birds answered me. I frowned but pressed deeper in. Maybe she’d run further than I thought. I wonder why she had decided to tak
LYRA’S POVI froze for a second, stunned by what Mabel had just done. No one had stood up for me like that since I got here. I had once believed Callia was my best friend. My sister in every way that counted. But Callia and Rowan had betrayed me together, like it meant nothing. After that, I started to believe maybe I didn’t need friends at all—because no one could hurt you if you didn’t let anyone in. But now, standing beside Mabel, I realized… maybe I’d been wrong. Maybe there were still people that cared. Maybe I shouldn't leave my walls so high up. Brenna’s face twisted like she’d tasted something sour. “So that’s how it is?” she spat. “You’re picking her?”Mabel didn’t even blink. “No. I’m picking decency.” Her voice was steady, sharper than I’d ever heard it.“Oh, give me a break,” Brenna scoffed. “You think you’re better than us now?”“I think I know what kind of person I want to be,” Mabel said. “And it’s not someone who throws juice on another girl just to feel powerful.”
