Chapter 1

"Your sister is gone! What is going to happen to Sonny? He's only seven. He may not survive at the hands of a wicked stepmother if his father remarries!"

The burning pain in my stomach lingered faintly as I stared blankly at the scene before me.

All I saw was black and white. Everyone who came to mourn hung their heads and sobbed quietly.

My mother, Amber Green, was kneeling on the ground and clutching the hem of my pants. She was crying her heart out.

Her noisy sobs dragged my consciousness back to the present moment.

I had somehow gone back in time!

Seeing that all I did was stare back at her with a blank expression, Mom slapped me hard across the face. She stood up and glared at me with eyes full of hatred.

She screeched, "Stella, you heartless woman! Winona died saving you, but you won't even shed a tear for her now! How can you be so cold-hearted?"

Feeling the sharp sting on my cheek from the slap, I countered flatly, "She didn't die saving me. Those men were after her from the start."

In my previous life, my sister, Winona Clarke, owed some loan sharks a massive debt. However, she paid it off overnight.

Before I could ask where she got the money, she was stabbed to death by those thugs while trying to save me.

As I was overcome with grief by Winona's unexpected death, I never stopped to think about the suspicious circumstances of her death.

It was at that time that Mom suggested I stand in for Winona and become the wife of my brother-in-law, Kenneth Cohen. Firstly, it was to repay all the kindness he had shown our family over the years. Secondly, it was because I could protect my nephew, Sonny Cohen, from being mistreated.

Kenneth had threatened that if I didn't marry him, he would take back all the money he had given us.

Mom had stammered and said pitifully that she couldn't pay him back. My dad, Brad Clarke, had died early, so Mom had worked several jobs for years just to raise Winona and me.

I didn't want Mom to suffer, so I married Kenneth.

To my horror, I found out he was a sadist only after I got married to him. I endured his torment day and night just to protect Sonny from his cruelty.

While I was being tortured, Sonny listened to my screams at the door and burst into laughter. Even so, I struggled to hold on for years just to raise him. Finally, Kenneth died one day.

Only then did I learn it had all been a scam.

This time, Winona could deal with her astronomical debt herself.

Mom flew into a rage when she heard that I was shirking responsibility, as if everything had nothing to do with me.

She shrieked, "You must be the cause of Winona's death! Otherwise, why would those thugs spare you? You fooled around out there and got involved with those unsavory men! My poor Winona was killed by her own sister! Now, she can't even rest in peace!"

Everyone around who heard Mom's words began whispering among themselves, condemning me for being ungrateful.

I had never understood why Mom blatantly favored Winona in everything since we were little. After all, we were twins. She had been willing to pay for Winona to attend a private college, but she wouldn't let me attend Northvale College, the top university across the country.

Right before I died, I had discovered that Winona and I didn't even share the same father. Winona was the product of Mom's affair with her first love. So, Mom had no qualms about ruining my life to pave a path for Winona.

"Since your sister died for you, you should marry Kenneth in her place!" Mom exclaimed.

Earlier, I had called the police to report everything, so now, I handed over evidence showing that Winona hired the hitman. I also submitted the surveillance footage from the day at the crematorium. They had stalled again and again, claiming there wasn't enough proof. But now, the evidence was irrefutable.Winona's entire family was taken in for investigation. On the other hand, I was cleared of all charges. As the case caused such a public uproar, the police released a summary of what had happened. After Winona faked her death and returned home with Kenneth, his beatings became even more brutal. By the time she appeared on the livestream, her legs had already been chopped off. Due to his threats, she didn't dare to expose her true situation. The viral post from before was uploaded by Sonny. He had planned to blame Winona's future death on me one day. No matter how abnormal Sonny was, he was only seven years old. He didn't understand how serious the consequences were, nor had he

Kenneth swept his eyes over my body like he was inspecting a piece of merchandise. Satisfied with what he saw, he smirked. He said, "Stella, you belong to me from now on."Then, he glanced at Mom's pathetic figure and said in a sinister tone, "If this old hag ever upsets you again, I'll take care of her myself."Mom staggered to her feet, trembling and desperate to escape this nightmare. Of course she had thought about who mutilated Winona so cruelly. The biggest suspect could only be Kenneth. But then again, she didn't have the courage to confront him. So, she directed all her rage onto me, convincing herself that I was the one who ruined her precious Winona.Winona stared at something, or rather someone, behind Kenneth in terror. Following her line of sight, I saw my seven-year-old nephew, Sonny. He looked at Winona's limbless body and smiled sweetly. "Great. Now, Mommy can't run away anymore."Then, he turned to me with confusion. "Do you want to be like Mommy, too, Aunt Stel

Mom had somehow gotten hold of my new phone number. The moment I picked up, I heard her howling over the phone. "Stella, I'm begging you! Please let Winona go!""What's going on, Mom?" I asked. She didn't answer my question. She just told me to hurry home, saying that Winona was about to die.I could tell something was off and tried to refuse her. However, in a way that was very out of character, Mom suddenly spoke to me in a gentle and coaxing tone. After my repeated refusals, she finally hung up.Right before the call disconnected, I heard her complain tearfully, "Do you see that, everyone? That heartless woman must have done something to Winona! Why else wouldn't she come back?"Hearing her sniffles, I finally understood that she was livestreaming.I grabbed my phone and found her livestream room in no time. As it was hosted on the same account Sonny used for his viral post, the stream was trending.I saw Mom dabbing at her tears dramatically on screen.Behind her was Wino

From the day Winona came back from the dead, she disappeared completely from my sight.I changed my phone number, too, because I didn't want to be involved with that deranged family in any way. Nevertheless, trouble still came knocking.A post suddenly went viral online. It claimed that the poster's aunt had been jealous of his mother and had hired killers to murder him. Luckily, the mother survived. But due to insufficient evidence, the aunt walked away scot-free.Now, the aunt had replaced the mother and had become the father's new wife. The mother was missing, and the child was being mistreated daily. Attached to the post was a picture of a battered little hand.Once the post gained attention, it spread online like wildfire. At first, most people assumed it was just clickbait. But then, nosy people online found out the poster's address and shared it online. The incident concerning my family wasn't exactly unknown. Everyone stared at me in shock.Mom finally came back to her senses. Without Kenneth holding her back, she strode forward angrily and slapped me."How vicious of you, Stella! How did I give birth to such an evil daughter?" she screamed. I let out a cold laugh. How perfectly Winona twisted everything around! But who in their right mind would fight to hold on to two sadists like they were something precious?Still, Winona's little tale held about 80 percent truth to it. The only catch was that she had pinned the blame for every vile thing she had done onto me, the victim, instead.Winona had always been the one who loved stealing things. She was the one who had stolen someone else's husband. In the beginning, the one Mom had planned to marry off to Kenneth in exchange for money was me. He had the money and the looks. To be fair, he was nothing like those typical rich old men. Aside from being 20 years older than me, no one had anything bad to say about Kenneth. At the end of the

My emotional cries drew everyone's attention toward Winona.Instantly, everyone knew what was going on. So, it really was a staged play all along. When Kenneth saw that Winona was indeed alive, he walked straight over and slapped her hard across the face.Mom collapsed to the ground, mumbling that everything was over.Winona covered her cheek and sobbed. "Honey, aren't you happy that I'm not dead?"Kenneth glared at her furiously and growled, "How do you still have the nerve to ask that, you bitch? So, you were pretending to be dead all the while! I treated you so well, yet you tried to fool me!"Seeing me standing by and enjoying the show with an amused expression, Winona suddenly directed her accusations at me. She cried, "I didn't mean to… It was Stella! She forced me to do it."Winona started sobbing, and Kenneth signaled for her to go on.In the twisted story that followed, I was painted as a spiteful, jealous sister. She, on the other hand, became the most innocent victim
