OPHELIA COLE

It was around 9 p.m., but you could barely tell, the street was still very much awake. The lights were bright, people were moving, and everything felt alive, just like I remembered from my childhood. Damien walked beside me. With Grandma asleep and her nurse already assigned to her, I had told Damien I didn’t want to go home yet. I needed fresh air. I needed to see the city. I needed outside.

I told him I would find my way back home, and he asked if I wasn’t planning to bring him along.

I accepted immediately, because I actually needed the company. And, well… I felt like I could ease up around him.

We’d barely walked for five minutes when I spotted a game from my childhood, and I rushed toward it without thinking. I placed my coin into the machine and started playing, but I kept losing. Damien joined in, and somehow he was winning every round.

I bumped into him, accusing him of cheating. “I played this game all the time as a kid. It’s unfair I’m not getting any good

LUCA DAWSON The door closed behind me, and for a second, I just stood there, staring at it like it might open again if I waited long enough. My cheek still burned. Not from the slap ... not really ... but from what it meant. Ophelia had never hit me before. Never looked at me the way she did tonight, like I was something unfamiliar. Something she didn’t trust.I exhaled slowly and started down the hallway. The house felt different now. Quieter. Accusatory. Like it had watched everything and taken her side. She shouldn’t have slapped me.That was the first thought that settled in my chest, heavy and indignant. I was trying. I was here. I’d come back, hadn’t I? Faced the mess, the media, the questions. I didn’t run .... not really. That had to count for something. But the image of her sitting in Malcolm Clark’s car refused to leave my head. The way she’d smiled. It wasn’t polite. It wasn’t distant. It was the kind of smile she used to give me. Open. Easy.I poured myself a drink, not

OPHELIA COLE I had just finished changing my clothes when Luca walked into my room.I noticed him immediately, of course I did.....but he didn’t say anything. He stood by the door, arms folded across his chest, watching me in that unsettling way that made my skin prickle. The silence stretched, thick and deliberate, like he was waiting for me to crack first.I didn’t give him the satisfaction.I moved around the room, setting my bag down, adjusting the throw pillow on the bed, pretending I couldn’t feel his eyes on me. Pretending I didn’t know he was there at all.It annoyed him. I could tell.“You told me you were going to see Mary,” he said at last.“Yes,” I replied calmly. “And I did.”He let out a humorless laugh. “Mary isn’t who I saw you with in that car.”I froze for half a second before forcing myself to stay still.“That was Malcolm Clark,” he continued, his voice sharpening. “So what is this, Ophelia? Are you fucking him now? Is that what this is?”The words hit like a sl

OPHELIA COLE My cab came to a slow stop in front of the coffee shop Malcolm had mentioned. I paid the driver, stepped out, and pushed through the glass doors, just in time to see Malcolm already standing and waving at me. He’d spotted me first. Some things, apparently, didn’t change. His smile was wide and genuine, the same easy excitement I remembered, and before I knew it, I was smiling and waving back too.“Glad you could make it,” he said when I reached the table. “I was starting to think you’d stand me up.”I scoffed. “Please. I’m late, not cruel.”He laughed and pulled out a chair for me. “Still punctual-challenged. Good to know some things are constant.”“Don’t start,” I muttered, dropping into the seat. “You used to arrive late just to make an entrance.”“That was strategy,” he defended. “And it worked.”I rolled my eyes, but the corner of my mouth lifted anyway. He studied me for a moment, the way he always did....like he was quietly updating some internal version of me. “

OPHELIA COLE Mary’s apartment building looked the same as always, old bricks, peeling paint, the stubborn flowerpot she kept outside her door even though everything inside it refused to grow. But today, standing in front of her door, it all felt… comforting. Familiar. Like I could finally breathe. I knocked once. The door swung open almost instantly.“Jesus Christ, Lia,” she said, eyes immediately softening. “You look like someone wrung your soul out.”I tried to smile, but it came out more like a painful twitch.Mary didn’t wait for explanations. She grabbed my wrist, pulled me inside, and kicked the door shut behind us.Her apartment smelled like warm cinnamon, leftover coffee, and the citrus cleaner she used when she was stressed. Soft music played somewhere in the background, one of those old playlists she swore helped her think.“You’re staying here for a while,” she said, not even a question. “Sit.”I collapsed onto her couch, sinking into cushions that felt like they’d been w

  • Seduced By My Fiancee's Older Brother    CHAPTER 16

OPHELIA COLE The past few days had been nothing short of suffocating, unpleasant in every way. I felt like the most confused woman alive, backed into a corner with no air, no clarity, no room to breathe. Mary flew into town two days ago, thank God, but I hadn’t had a moment to see her. Today, I finally planned to visit her, to spend time with someone who wasn’t one of the brothers. I needed a break from them both, even if just for a little while.Damien had practically vanished ever since Luca returned. It was like he’d become a ghost....present somewhere in the house, yet impossible to find. The Damien I’d come to know, the one I’d spent real, meaningful time with, had disappeared. Days had gone by without me laying eyes on him, though I knew he still came home.He skipped breakfast. Skipped dinner.Even the kitchen...our accidental morning meeting place, had somehow become foreign to him.And Luca? I didn’t even know where to begin. Fortunately, he kept himself occupied, shuffling

OPHELIA COLE I sat on the edge of the bed, fingers picking at my nails while water rushed in the bathroom. A few minutes later, the flow stopped and Luca stepped out, towel low on his hips, drops of water trailing down his chest.I swallowed and looked away, anywhere but at him. He noticed, of course he did.“Oh, come on, Ophelia,” he chuckled, voice dipped in old confidence. “You can’t possibly tell me you don’t miss this body. You were never this shy.”I didn’t respond. Didn’t look. And thankfully, he didn’t push. He crossed to his wardrobe, acting as though nothing, no scandal, no rehab, no betrayal, sat between us.He was right about one thing. We’d never slept together, but there had been hands, mouths, lines crossed in the dark. And yes.... I had adored him. A sketch in my drawer still proved it.But that was before. Before the fracture. Now everything sat lopsided and wrong.Luca, however, seemed blissfully unaware. Too cheerful. Too light. Too certain.“What do you think...
