“I'm sure you already know what that means right?”

“Speak to Peter about it”, Josephine said.

“We both know Peter doesn't have enough funds. His brother has access to loads of it and my son has almost…nothing.”

“That's not Lucas’ fault”, Josephine said.

“It is”, Mandy snapped back.

“Lucas does not want to share the property with his brother. And what's the excuse? That he's going to get an heir who will manage everything.”

“And he will”, Josephine said, trying to suppress her fury.

“When will he get an heir? It's been over four years of marriage. The least he can do is to split the property into half with his brother…or better still, let his brother have it all.”

“Never!”.

At this point, Josephine was clearly furious.

Daisy knew what that meant for her.

She was always at the receiving end of Josephine's wrath.

Her stomach turned and twisted as she sat with her head lowered to the ground out of shame.

Just then, Josephine's phone rang.

She stepped aside to answer the call and the anger on her face suppressed quickly.

She returned and cleared her throat before speaking,

“I'll speak to Lucas and he'll release funds to Sarah.”

Everyone was shocked.

Who called Josephine and what did the person say to make her soften up quickly?

Daisy arched her brows as she thought about this.

She knew Josephine too well.

So after Mandy, Sarah and her son left, she went upstairs to change into her casual outfits and stripped herself of the jewelry she wore to impress them.

Afterwards, she stood nearby in case Josephine called her.

She was not sure what had happened but she knew something was up.

“Daisy, prepare something lovely for dinner.”

“Okay mum”.

She walked into the kitchen utterly confused.

In the morning, her mother-in-law was so furious that she did not even respond to her greeting.

To top it all, Mandy had reminded her of living without an heir.

There was no reason to be happy but she was and this made Daisy scared.

But she still carried out her tasks with the assistance of Marilyn, the head chef in the Miller mansion.

When Lucas arrived, he beamed with joy.

He even bought a box of chocolate on his way home.

‘Maybe he signed a good deal’, Daisy thought to herself as she went in to serve dinner.

“Feel free to join us on the table”, Damien said and his mother shot him a suspicious look.

But he insisted.

On the dining table, they all ate in silence.

Daisy was just happy to be there.

The last time she sat with just the two of them was on her first wedding anniversary.

After that day, no one asked her to come join them unless guests were present.

Josephine cherished the Miller reputation.

So much so that she was willing to pretend in front of the world that she loved Daisy.

“You can pack up the dishes”, Lucas said after they had their meal.

“And go to your room afterwards. There's no need to wash the dishes. One of the servants will handle it”, he added.

Daisy stood rooted in her spot…shocked by Lucas’ words.

She finally came to her senses when Josephine snapped her fingers, signalling her to leave.

‘Is Lucas a changed man?

Maybe he feels bad about everything. Or…’

She stopped her thoughts immediately.

‘No. No,’ she muttered to herself.

‘I don't think that's it’.

Lucas was never nice to her even though he wanted to assert his rights on her as her husband.

He only saw her as a tool for pleasure and the minute he was done with her, he would kick her out of his room.

It was her new normal and she had long gotten used to it.

But this new behavior surprised her.

Meanwhile, in the living room, Lucas and his mother were having a conversation.

Daisy tried to hear what they were speaking about but it was to no avail.

When she had gone to her room, Josephine turned to her son,

“Daisy is gone now so we can speak freely.”

“The lawyer called while Mandy was here and he reminded me of the clause in your father's will”, she added.

Lucas chuckled, “Don't worry about all of that.

In a few days, you'll experience the happiest day of your life and everything will be sorted.”

“I can't wait to see what surprise you have for me. A surprise that made you treat Daisy kindly? Must be worth it”, she smirked.

“You have to treat her right too. That's all I need you to do and I'll handle the rest”, he said.

Daisy, in her room, kept turning on her bed. She could barely get any sleep.

Her mind kept spiralling at the thought of everything that happened throughout the day.

She woke up shortly after getting into bed.

Her head ached terribly but there was no water in her room.

She stood to get some from downstairs but as she was about descending, she heard giggles from Lucas' room.

It was too late for Lucas to be up and he always hated the idea of answering calls at midnight.

‘Who could he be talking to?’ Daisy wondered as she got closer to the door.

She pushed the door open slowly so as to not make a sound.

The little space allowed her to see enough of what was happening.

Inside, Lucas seemed to be on a video call and the voice that came through the other end was a lady's.

Neither of them were audible enough.

But his phone's screen cast a soft glow of light on his face and it made it clear as day that he was genuinely happy and invested in whatever he was discussing.

Daisy's blood boiled with jealousy but she dared not to cross her boundaries and step into the room…especially not without permission.

All she could do was return to her room and cry.

Her tears came from a place of loneliness.

She was married yet felt single…even worse because her family had severed all ties with her.

And they did not want to see her.

Not even once.

She cried herself to sleep and did not realize how late it was when she woke up.

The sun had fully announced its presence in the room.

‘Oh no! It's a quarter past nine!’, Daisy exclaimed, running into the bathroom to quickly shower.

“Good morning mum. Sorry, I overslept”, she said upon sighting Josephine in the conservatory.

“It's fine. Come let's bask in the sun together. Lucas stepped out and I'm bored.”

Daisy looked around, wiping her eyes.

She was not sure if she heard her mother-in-law right.

“Come and sit here”, Josephine said, tapping the soft cushion next to her.

Daisy did as she was told and did her best to stay in her limits by not starting a conversation.

They sat in absolute quietness until one of the helpers came in and told Josephine that Lucas had returned and he wanted to see her.

“Let's go inside”, Josephine told Daisy whose expression remained that of unease throughout.

She followed her mother in law but her eyes could not believe who she saw in the sitting room.

Lucas had company.

And it was the model, Nina Cyrus.

“How's she doing, doctor?” the man in the tailored black suit asked. The top two buttons of his white shirt were undone, with his sleeves rolled up once, exposing a silver watch with a cracked surface.“Physically, she is fine. No fractures so that's a good sign. But, she seems to be in shock and she has some marks on her body.” “Shock?” “Yes. You never really told me if she's your family.” “I told you, it's complicated.” “I'd like to speak with her family.”“I don't have access to her family at the moment. You can speak to me.” “Alright. The thing is, she is physically fine but mentally absent. We can't tell what exactly the cause is so we'd need to speak to her family.” “But if that won't be possible”, he continued, “then we'd have to file a police report.” “That won't be necessary. I'll take care of her until I get in touch with her family.” “Alright, Mr. Elbane.”“Can I at least see her?” “Yes you can. I can't tell if she's awake now. But don't say anything to trigger h

“Please leave me, mum”, Daisy cried in pain as Josephine's nails dug into her skin. But the older lady was not having any of it. Daisy looked at Lucas but he looked away. She kept crying, while trying to resist Josephine's force. “I don't want to sign them. I still love my husband. Please leave me.”“But I don't love you!” Lucas shot back. She stood frozen. “You heard me right. I don't love you! And I don't want this marriage. I married you because of that stupid bet I made but you couldn't produce a child for me.” “For five years”, he continued with anger in his eyes, “For five years, I've tolerated you. I've tried to accommodate your low style but what's it all for? You couldn't give me an heir. But I'm done with this!Nina is in my life now and I want to do right by her and my unborn baby. So just sign the papers and set me free.” Daisy sniffed, unable to process what Lucas had just said. She had always thought he married her out of love or he was just fond of her.Now she

Nina happened to be a rising model from Vancouver. She was elegant with impeccable taste and lots of brands desired to work with her. Perhaps, she was going to be the face of Miller Holdings. But Daisy was slightly wrong. “Meet Nina, mum.” They exchanged an air kiss. “And who's she?” Nina asked, pointing to Daisy. “She's…uhm…my wife”, Lucas struggled to say. “Oh”, Nina smiled, scanning Daisy from head to toe.“I've heard a lot about you.” “Me too. I've seen you on many billboards”, Daisy beamed from ear to ear. “You're really pretty.” “Thanks”, Nina said, feeling flattered. “You can go upstairs”, Lucas said to Daisy after noticing she was gawking. He personally served his guest a drink which was rare. There were giggles and the conversation spun for a while. It wasn't until quite some time had passed that Daisy noticed her phone was not in her bedroom.‘I must have dropped it in the conservatory’, she said to herself and quickly went there. But it wasn't there…‘Maybe it

“What did the test results say?” the older lady in the room asked, impatient. She had been pacing around for over ten minutes. “It's…it's…negative.” “What?!” Fury etched all over her expression when she landed a slap on the younger lady's face. “It's been four years and two months and you still keep saying the same thing.” “Let it be, mum” the guy in a navy blue shirt said as he walked over to console his mother who had rage in her eyes. “Lucas, you married a log of wood. She's simply a plank!” she said as she sat down on her royal stool. Her son now turned to the younger lady who stood there with trembling hands. “Go to your room”, he said, waving her off with his hand. She ran out of the living room and the minute she got to the bedroom, she dropped on her knees and sobbed bitterly. This was the seventh pregnancy test she had taken since the year began and on all seven occasions, she received a slap or two upon announcing the negative results. Even worse, she would be so
