Chapter 5

Author: Selene Stream
On Dale's first night in our home, Oscar gave up his own bedroom for him. His reason was that the guest room didn't have the starry-sky projector Zachary had loved when he was alive.

When I entered Oscar's room, Dale was rearranging the photographs on the nightstand. He had tucked away the picture of Oscar and me together beneath a snowy mountain and replaced it with one of himself and Zachary.

"Who gave you permission to touch those?" I demanded.

Dale froze. "Oscar said it was okay."

Oscar walked in and said, "Dad, Mr. Stratton can't sleep. Looking at Zachary's picture helps him feel at ease."

"What about our photo?" I asked.

"Let's put it away for a few days," Oscar replied, as though it were the most natural thing in the world.

I gazed at him for a long time. "Fine."

I took the photo out of the drawer and brought it back to my study.

…

The next day, the school held a career day where parents were invited to share their professions.

I had originally been invited to speak as an architect. But when I arrived at the school, I discovered that Dale had taken my place on stage. He was a documentary filmmaker.

The audience applauded enthusiastically, and Oscar proudly said to his classmates, "Mr. Stratton is my mom's friend, and he's made lots of amazing movies."

After the event, Oscar's homeroom teacher, Donna Brewer, looked surprised to see me.

"Mr. Baxter, Oscar told me you had something urgent come up and voluntarily gave your slot to Mr. Stratton."

I turned to Oscar. "When did I ever say I had something urgent to attend to?"

The smile froze on his face. "Mom said you've been pushing for a divorce lately, so she thought you showing up might make Mr. Stratton uncomfortable."

Francine again. But then again, Oscar had made the decision himself.

When we got home, I packed the last of my documents into my suitcase.

Oscar stood in the doorway and asked, "Dad, are you really leaving?"

"Yeah."

"Is it because of Mr. Stratton?"

"No." I closed the suitcase. "It's because you and your mom both told me time and again that this family doesn't need me anymore."

Tears welled up in Oscar's eyes. "I never said I didn't want you."

"But you want me to give up my place in your life to make room for Dale."

"He just lost Zachary."

"So what?" For the first time, I cut him off. "Does losing a child mean I have to lose mine too?"

Oscar was speechless.

Suddenly, Francine asked coldly from the doorway, "Are you forcing Oscar to make a choice?"

"Do I need to?" I looked at her. "He's already made it."

The countdown had dwindled to just 19 hours.

The next morning, Francine went to her law firm. She sent me a message asking me to meet her that afternoon to discuss the divorce, adding that she'd be bringing Oscar along.

"Why don't you cool off first? If you insist on divorcing me, I'll fight for custody of Oscar. He's already 12 years old, so the court will respect his wishes."

She knew exactly how to hit me where it hurt the most.

For the past 12 years, I'd been there for nearly every one of Oscar's parent-teacher meetings, every time he fell ill, and every competition he entered.

Francine knew how much Oscar meant to me, so she thought she could always make me back down by threatening to take him away.

At 2:00 pm, Francine and Dale were seated in the mediation room. Oscar was there too.

Francine turned to him and asked, "If your dad and I separate, who would you want to live with?"

Oscar remained silent for a long time before answering in a small voice, "You, Mom. Mr. Stratton will be there for me too."

Francine seemed quite pleased with his answer. She glanced at the clock on the wall. It was already 2:30 pm, yet I still hadn't shown up.

At 3:00 pm, she called me for the first time. But no one answered.

By 3:20 pm, unease had begun to creep in.

At 4:00 pm, my flight took off right on schedule.

As the countdown hit zero, the city was shrinking rapidly beneath me. No new numbers appeared, nor was there any sign of the so-called "Forever".

I switched off my phone and slipped my wedding ring into the paper bag the flight attendant had handed me.

It wasn't as hard as I'd thought it'd be to let go of a 13-year marriage and 12 years of father-son bonds.

Meanwhile, Kurt pushed open the door to the mediation room and placed the divorce petition in front of Francine.

"Mr. Baxter has already left the country. He has agreed to let Oscar remain in your sole custody. For matters concerning the division of assets and visitation arrangements, please contact me going forward."

Five years later, my overseas assignment came to an end.The new city project won an international architecture award, and the award ceremony was held back home. That day, I ran into Francine and Oscar.Oscar was 17 years old now. Not only had he received an early admission offer from the school of architecture, but he was also beginning to look more and more like I had at his age.Francine had changed quite a bit too. She had left her old law firm and stopped handling high-stakes divorce litigation, choosing instead to join a legal aid organization for minors. At the same time, she never remarried.I occasionally heard news about her from Oscar, but I never asked about her personal life. After the ceremony, Oscar held the trophy and studied it for a long time."Dad, is it heavy?" he asked me."Not too bad.""When I was little, I thought being an architect meant drawing a few sketches every day.""What about now?"He smiled and handed the trophy back to me. "Now I think you'

Two years later, Oscar turned 14 years old. He had transferred to a new school and left his old robotics team. After being evaluated by the school counselor, Dina Madden, Oscar joined the school technology club. He started from the ground up as a junior member of the mechanical team.We still had a video call every week, but he no longer kept track of how long our calls lasted or deliberately dragged them out until the very last second.Sometimes we talked about design. Other times, he simply propped his camera up beside his desk while we each went about our own work in silence. Our relationship as father and son hadn't returned to the way it used to be, but little by little, we'd established a new rhythm. That summer, he came to visit me abroad on his own for the first time. When we met at the airport, Oscar didn't rush over to hug me like he used to. Instead, he simply stood a few steps away with his suitcase and called out, "Hey, Dad""How was your flight?""It was okay.""

On the day of the divorce hearing, I returned to the country.Four months had passed since I left.Francine sat on the other side of the courtroom without a lawyer representing her. She had lost a considerable amount of weight, and she no longer wore the badge identifying her as a senior partner at the law firm. The judge, Alexis Rubio, asked whether we both agreed to the divorce."Yes, Your Honor," we answered in unison.Francine closed her eyes briefly. Even though she had known the outcome for a long time, her hands still trembled slightly as she spoke those three words aloud. There was little dispute over the division of assets. The marital home would go to her, and our joint savings would be divided according to the agreement.I transferred part of the proceeds under my name into Oscar's education fund, while Francine and I would share the costs of his future medical care and education.Judge Rubio then asked about the custody arrangements."Oscar previously stated that h

Francine's tears finally spilled over."Why not? I'd already admitted I was wrong, and I'm willing to change as well. Are you really unwilling to give me even one more chance?"I looked at her. "I gave you one at the air show. I told you it was Oscar's birthday, yet you still chose to go looking for Dale. I gave you another chance at the restaurant. When I asked Oscar why he'd lied to me, you told me it wasn't deception."Francine's lips trembled slightly.I continued, "When I put the divorce papers in front of you, I gave you that chance too. I made it clear that you could help Dale, but you couldn't sacrifice yourself, Oscar, and my place in the family to do it."But you called me childish and accused me of being heartless. After Dale moved into our home, I asked you one last time why I had to bear the burden of his loss. And you still thought I was trying to force Oscar to choose between us."I didn't accuse her or raise my voice. Instead, I simply laid out every chance she ha

When Francine arrived, I was attending the opening ceremony for the new city project. She didn't contact me beforehand. Instead, she stood quietly at the back of the crowd and watched the entire ceremony.Onstage, I was dressed in a dark suit and explaining the architectural vision behind the development to the guests. The new city preserved the original coastline, connecting the public library, schools, and community center along a single pedestrian thoroughfare.During his speech, Sean Paine, the project director, mentioned that I had once lived on-site for an entire month to keep the project on schedule. And when a problem arose with one of the structural designs, I had stayed in the conference room with my team for three days straight.Francine stood below the stage, her expression growing increasingly complicated.Throughout our marriage, she had always seen me as an architect with a flexible schedule. She knew I had won awards and that the firm depended on me. But she had n

From then on, I had a half-hour video call with Oscar every Sunday. The time was fixed, and I would start early or let the calls run over.If he wanted to talk about school, I'd simply listen. If he had questions about his robotics programming, I'd offer advice. But if he cried and begged me to return home during the call, I would no longer stay up until the early hours comforting him as I used to.During our third call, he couldn't help asking, "Dad, do you not love me anymore?""I do.""Then why can't you be like you used to be?"I looked at him. "Because love and relationships aren't the same thing. You're still my son, but the trust between us needs to be rebuilt. And even if we manage to rebuild that trust, I still won't live with your mom again."Oscar couldn't wrap his head around it. In his world, parents and children were supposed to be bound together forever. As long as someone admitted they were wrong, everything should go back to the way it was.All I could do was t
