Chapter 2

Author: Arya Sue
Harrison saw me still sitting at the table, the food I'd promised to bring him untouched in front of me.

After a moment of silence, he said, "Celeste was the one who made the introduction for this partnership. Taking her to dinner was the least I could do. And don't bother eating that now that it's cold. Just throw it away."

I gave a quiet hum of acknowledgment and canceled another contract on my laptop. "Got it."

Harrison glanced at me. My reaction didn't seem to be what he'd expected.

After a pause, he added, "I'm taking Celeste to Lumière tomorrow as a thank-you. Do you want to come?"

Lumière.

Suddenly, I remembered the hardest period of our lives seven years ago.

I'd been trying to cheer myself up, so I'd Photoshopped a picture of Harrison and me kissing beneath the Tower of Clouds.

I'd laughed and asked him if it looked real.

Instead of laughing with me, he stared at the obviously fake background for a long time. Then he suddenly pulled me into his arms and made me a solemn promise. Once he had money, the first thing he would do was take me to Lumière so we could recreate that exact photo for real.

Years passed. Harrison's business grew, and eventually, Knightwell Group went public.

However, when I brought up that old promise again, he frowned. "Serena, we just went public. You know how busy I am every day."

After that, he'd stopped bothering with excuses altogether. "I'm busy. No time."

He wanted me to understand how much pressure he was under and how little time he had.

So I did.

In the end, the dream we'd shared seven years ago was finally going to come true—with his ex-girlfriend.

I smiled faintly and calmly opened another client's email. "I'm not really interested anymore. You two should go."

For some reason, Harrison seemed relieved to hear that. "All right. I just came back to grab something, then I'm heading out. Take care of lunch yourself. We'll have dinner together tonight."

He paused before adding, "Also, this partnership is crucial to Knightwell Group's international expansion. I've invited the press to a launch event next Monday. You've always wanted to stand beside me publicly, haven't you? Monday's your chance. Be ready..."

He stopped, his expression turning serious. "Don't worry. This time, I'll introduce you properly to everyone."

I looked up at him.

Eight years ago, when Harrison and Celeste broke up, he'd gotten so drunk at a bar that he'd cried like a child.

The next day, when I'd brought her up, he'd acted as if he'd never even known her. Calmly, he'd told me he'd misjudged her and that it was all in the past.

A year later, he confessed his feelings for me, and we started dating very publicly. He posted about our relationship everywhere, making absolutely sure Celeste would see it.

But once he started Knightwell Group, our marriage became a secret.

Now, eight years later, he was finally willing to let me stand openly beside him in front of everyone at Knightwell Group as compensation for Celeste.

He claimed he'd moved on, but every kindness he showed me still bore her fingerprints.

Still, maybe this was for the best.

Canceling the Westerland partnership would take a few days to process. Announcing it at the launch event sounded like perfect timing.

That evening, I arrived at the restaurant early, as usual.

Harrison's schedule was always packed. After seven years together, showing up early and waiting for him had become second nature.

While I waited, an international call came in.

It was Kevin Crawford, a senior colleague from my university days—and the man I'd faced across the negotiating table just days ago.

His voice was warm, with an unmistakable note of caution.

There was no sound of anything breaking. It was silent and gradual, like an iceberg beginning to collapse from within.Harrison had always thought of Serena as someone who belonged to him, the woman who would always be there behind him and never leave. He'd believed that no matter what he did or how he treated her, she would always be waiting for him. He'd been wrong. Completely, disastrously wrong.Celeste ended up even worse off than Harrison. After the press conference disaster, her name became synonymous with being a joke. Several endorsement deals she'd already negotiated were canceled. The abuse on her social media accounts became so relentless that she had to disable comments, and her talent agency terminated her contract. She went to Harrison in tears, only to discover that he refused to see her.She waited outside the Knightwell Group's headquarters for an entire afternoon before Harrison's car finally appeared. The window rolled down, revealing Harrison's cold, express

"Don't," I said. "Harrison, you're the CEO of Knightwell. Making a scene out here isn't a good look."His hand froze in midair."Go home." My voice was so calm that even I was surprised. "Ashbourne is a long way from home. Don't waste the trip."With that, I turned and walked away without looking back. My heels clicked crisply against the marble steps. No footsteps followed behind me.I kept walking at an even pace. I didn't run. I didn't look back.It wasn't until I reached the corner that I finally stopped. Not because of him, but the sunlight was simply too beautiful. The autumn sun in Ashbourne was warm, carrying the sweet scent of flowers on the breeze.I tilted my face toward it and closed my eyes for a moment. This felt good....Harrison didn't leave. He stood where he was, watching Serena's figure gradually disappear around the corner without ever taking that step after her.He didn't know why he hadn't followed. Was it pride? Resentment? Or had he finally realized

He recovered quickly. He smiled and gave me a look that said he knew I was just upset."Enough, Serena. We've been together for seven years. You can't just decide there's nothing left to talk about."Seven years again.I laughed bitterly to myself. But I had no intention of arguing with him outside the entrance to RT headquarters, so I stepped around him and started to leave. He reached out and blocked my path. "Serena."For the first time, a crack appeared in his composure. "What exactly do you want from me? I came all the way here myself. What else do you expect me to do?"I stopped and turned to look at him."Harrison, I don't expect you to do anything." My voice remained calm. "I just don't want anything to do with you anymore."He flinched as though the words had struck him, but only for an instant. Then he slipped back into that same condescending attitude. "Don't forget, we're still married.""My attorney already sent the papers to your office," I said. "They'll be wai

Block.Confirm.Then I tossed my phone back into my bag and continued down the tree-lined avenue.A breeze drifted in from the river, carrying the faint dampness of the water. I took a deep breath and felt lighter than I had in years. From the moment I decided to leave, Harrison and I had nothing left to say to each other. The days that followed flew by.My first week at RT was nonstop. The Westerland project had countless details to manage—building the team, coordinating with our partners, working across departments. Every part of it required my personal attention. But being busy here felt completely different from being busy at Knightwell. Every stage had a clear process. Every decision came with the authority I needed to make it.I didn't have to worry about anyone's moods. I didn't have to clean up the mess left behind by someone else's whims. And I didn't have to put someone else's name on work that was mine.It felt incredible.By the end of my second week, I could fina

I smiled and took a sip of tea. "What happened after that?""I showed them your proposal." Kevin leaned back in his chair, his admiration for me completely undisguised. "The entire executive team went silent for about three seconds. Then someone said one thing.""What?""'Whatever she asks for, give it to her.'"His exaggerated delivery made me laugh. The rest of dinner was easy and relaxed. Kevin was a skilled conversationalist. He knew what to ask and what to leave alone, keeping the conversation focused entirely on work and my plans for the future. But when it was time to pay, he suddenly made a seemingly random comment, "Serena, do you know what they're calling you privately at headquarters?""What?""The godsend who made us rich." His eyes crinkled as he laughed. "I seriously didn't expect you to bring us a deal this big. You know, the day your project landed, my division's stock jumped seven percent."I laughed too.By the time we left the restaurant, it was already dar

One of the RT executives was speaking onstage. However, Harrison wasn't looking at him. His attention was fixed on the front row.On Serena. She had changed into a sharply tailored charcoal-gray suit. Her hair was simply pinned back, revealing the graceful line of her neck. She wasn't wearing heavy makeup. If anything, she looked even more understated than she usually did at the office. But there was something about the way she carried herself that made her seem like a complete stranger to Harrison. Her head was tilted slightly as she spoke quietly to the person beside her, a faint smile on her lips.Confident and serene, nothing about her was showy, yet somehow, it was impossible to look away. When a reporter asked a question, Serena straightened slightly and accepted the microphone. She answered calmly, speaking at an unhurried pace, every word clear and assured. She didn't glance at any notes, and there wasn't the slightest trace of nervousness. She looked as though she'd alw
