Chapter 1

"Honey, how much money do you have on you? People have been to Aaron's house again. They said that if he doesn't pay them back by today, they'll capture and sell him off on the black market.

"I know you're both on good terms," came someone's voice.

I was momentarily dazed.

The lump I felt in my throat had yet to disappear when I felt someone tugging at my sleeve.

I'd been reborn.

It was the day Carly Moran was trying to borrow money wherever she could on Aaron Langston's behalf.

Back when they were in school, Aaron was a year below her. He was a man with a fair and clean-shaven appearance.

Unfortunately, he had a father addicted to gambling. Word was that he had taken out multiple high-interest loans over the years.

Unable to repay them, he committed suicide, leaving behind his helpless son, who was constantly hounded by creditors.

If I were being honest, Carly was decent to me. In fact, everyone knew she adored me.

In my past life, she'd been borrowing money to help Aaron, claiming that Aaron was like a brother to her and that she couldn't bear seeing him ruined by debt collectors in his prime.

I'd just assumed that she was kind-hearted and didn't dwell on the matter.

However, Aaron's father owed eight million dollars, and scraping together that sum was no easy feat.

On top of that, his creditors were gangsters. If Carly got involved, she could potentially die.

Naturally, I did not want my fiancee to be caught up in this, so I gave her all my savings. In return, I merely asked that she stop involving herself in Aaron's predicament and focus on our wedding instead.

However, Aaron later committed suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills.

Upon hearing this, I felt sorry for him. Aaron was a promising young man, burdened by a father he was born to.

Carly displayed a momentary sadness, but said nothing to me for some time after.

Yet, I never expected her to kill me because of Aaron.

As I gazed upon Carly's face now, all I could think of was her words to me before I died.

"I clearly said that things aren't like that between Aaron and me, so why? Why were you unwilling to help him?

"Isn't your family quite wealthy? You rich folk will never understand this kind of despair, Jason Reed! How could you be so selfish and callous?

"You stood by, watched him perish, and expect me to marry someone as heartless as you? You rich folk are all scum!" she exclaimed.

Thinking of this made me laugh. My family earned millions each year, and I was the only son.

As such, my parents looked down on Carly's humble background. They wanted me to marry someone of equal social standing.

Since I genuinely loved Carly, they resorted to cutting off financial support to force me to heel.

However, Carly harbored such intense resentment toward me simply because I hadn't asked my family for money to save her beloved schoolmate.

Was I supposed to sell everything I owned just to appease her and her beloved?

Seeing that I didn't speak, Carly tenderly cupped my cheek now. The gesture that once brought me such loving warmth now seemed utterly repulsive.

"Honey, please believe me. I just feel sorry for him and wish to help.

"You know that we've known each other for some time now. Aaron's really a good person. He even said that he looks up to you," she pleaded.

I brushed her hand away. "My parents stopped giving me money ages ago because I wanted to be with you," I said coldly. "Where would I even find the money to give you?"

Carly seemed oblivious to my sarcasm and replied, "But darling, you're an only child. If you explain the situation to your parents, surely they'd help you."

"Then, are you in love with Aaron?" I retorted.

I snapped my head up to see Rose holding a steel pipe, looking at me with concern.Still, she was a woman. Her hands were shaking.Seeing Carly lie on the ground unmoving, I hurried over and put my arm around Rose's shoulder to comfort her. "It's alright. She won't die."Instead, Rose playfully pinched my cheek. "Murderers and their descendants are barred from civil service exams for three years. I know what I'm doing."Her unexpected quip made me laugh, and she suddenly pulled me to the car."I'll handle the Carly thing, so don't worry. But we need to sort ourselves out."As I got into her car, I stared blankly at her lovely face, my heart racing uncontrollably."We need to sort what out?" I mumbled."Why are you avoiding me?" she asked.I pursed my lips and felt flustered. "I wasn't avoiding you. I-It's just…"Seeing that I was so nervous that I could barely respond, she merely chuckled softly. "You silly goose," she murmured teasingly.…Carly was sentenced to several ye

The entire company group chat was in an uproar when I released that statement."Hang on. Am I out of the loop?""What happened to Ms. Moran? Isn't this an oddly seamless transition?""Is there anyone in the know who can speak up? I'm really dying to know. Judging by Mr. Reed's tone, did Ms. Moran do something?""No way! Will the company go under without Mr. Reed? I guess I need to start job hunting again."Meanwhile, Carly was in complete disarray. She wasn't answering calls or texts, focused instead on borrowing money for Aaron. When her business partner heard of this, they nearly fainted where they stood.Surely Carly wasn't thinking I'd cover for her? There was absolutely no way I would. To avoid being harassed by random strangers, I changed my phone number.I never expected Carly to rush out from behind me when I was parking my car one day.I was utterly shocked. The person before me, with tangled hair and bloodshot eyes, bore no resemblance to Carly. How could she have

Just then, my phone rang. "Hey, dude. Sorry, but something came up. My sister just got back today, and I asked her to pick you up. You should've met her by now, right? Isn't she gorgeous?I looked at the stunningly beautiful woman with shapely legs and nodded. "She's absolutely gorgeous."Rose looked at me with amusement. "You must be Jason Reed. The ultra handsome guy my brother's been raving about every day."I inhaled deeply and inwardly cursed Robert for spouting crap all the time.I then smiled awkwardly. "Well, I'm merely average looking.""Robert's absolutely right," she murmured, her smile deepening.I reckoned that she must've learned quite a bit about me from Robert."Next time you run into someone this clueless about the law, don't waste your breath. Just call the police… Wait, what are you staring at?" she asked.I couldn't help but blush slightly. Rose really looked like that top actress when she smiled."I-I didn't believe them. I was about to refute when you arr

I thought this incident was long behind me. Yet, a few days later, I received another text from Aaron, asking to meet. He also sent a picture of himself holding hands with Carly."Hey, Jason. Carly and I are dating now. Thanks for letting it happen. Let's meet up? We have something to tell you."I really didn't want to meet them at all, but I was curious to see what these scumbags were up to, so I accepted the invitation. At the same time, I texted Robert an address. "If anything happens, come get me immediately.""Roger that," came his reply.Aaron was surprisingly decent. He suggested meeting at a cafe near my place. As soon as I walked in, I saw Carly leaning shyly against Aaron's shoulder, her eyes red-rimmed. Aaron was gently wiping away her tears with a tissue.Seeing me approach, he awkwardly withdrew his hand."Spit it out, then."I glanced at them icily, unmoved by this allegedly affectionate display.Aaron pulled out a thick stack of papers and pushed it toward me.

Carly's face flushed scarlet. "I-I was only borrowing this. I never said I wouldn't return it to you.""So why wasn't I aware?" I retorted. "We've already broken up. Doesn't this count as theft?""Jason, how could you be so vain? They're just watches and jewelry! Even if I sold them, you could still buy them all back. "But you can't buy a person's life! Will you only be satisfied when Aaron is driven to his death?"Carly grew more agitated as she spoke, as if I was the one who had lied and not her. I was utterly shocked at how she could utter such shameless things.I scoffed. "That sounds nice. Why don't you sell all those designer bags, clothes, and jewelry I bought you, then? What? Is your precious schoolmate not worthy of such sacrifices?"Carly sputtered when she heard this, and even Aaron's gaze changed slightly.I sneered and added, "Look—a couple of immoral people are trying to emotionally blackmail me. Are you perhaps expecting me to take care of your kids once you get

My phone chimed. When I checked it, it was a series of texts from Aaron."I'm sorry, Jason. I didn't mean to post that. You know my situation is complicated right now. Carly just took pity on me and kept me company last night. "I heard you guys broke up. Please don't tell me it was because of me. I'd feel awful."I didn't respond to him. Such pedestrian tactics were beneath me.He posted that picture on his socials only to text me this. What was he expecting me to do? That I got down on my knees and begged Carly not to leave me? Or that I'd storm over to his place and beat the crap out of him?Aaron, who should've known better, was just as disgusting as an ingrate like Carly. I once saw Carly and Aaron's chat log by accident. Aaron constantly sent her text messages that made my toes curl."You're so nice, Carly. I envy Jason for having a girlfriend like you.""Jason is so lucky. He has a happy family and an adorable girlfriend. If only I could be so fortunate in life."Car
