Chapter 3

Dawn Ether
Not long after my blood was taken, Jordan suddenly started coughing up blood nonstop.

I was dragged to the main courtyard before I'd even figured out what was happening. A teacup came flying straight at my forehead, smashing against me so hard that I nearly lost my balance.

"Mother was right," Anthony snarled. "You really are pulling these dirty tricks. How could you poison the blood? Were you trying to kill—"

His words abruptly cut off when he saw the blood running down my forehead. He took a step toward me, and I took a step back. Seeing that, his jaw tightened. "Drop your act. I didn't even put any strength into it!"

Jordan lay weakly on the bed, his face deathly pale. He said, "Anthony, don't talk to your father like that."

As soon as the words left his mouth, he coughed up another mouthful of blood. Tabitha's expression grew even darker. The distress in her eyes was impossible to hide.

"Is this really the time to be defending him?" Anthony cried.

I finally understood what they were accusing me of. I wiped the blood that had trickled down my cheek and asked, "Do you really think I'd be stupid enough to poison the blood that he needs to use every day?"

For a moment, Tabitha was at a loss for words. Just then, the physician walked out, his expression grim.

"Whoever did this is very calculating. They used poison in the glaze, coating the entire bowl. No matter what you put in it, the poison will leach into it. This bowl… Where did it come from?" he asked.

Tabitha slammed her hand on the table and jabbed a finger at my face. "And you still dare say it wasn't you? I've seen this very set of bowls in your storeroom before. Who else would even have the chance to touch it?"

She had long since split all my assets in half and handed them over to Jordan. The Corke family had fallen on hard times, so she'd quietly given Jordan half of what was mine to squander as he pleased. That meant that this bowl set wasn't mine alone.

When I said that out loud, Tabitha stared at me in disbelief. "So you're saying Jordan poisoned himself? Do you think everyone is as unscrupulous as you are? Guards, give the prince consort 20 strokes!"

As soon as the words were out of her mouth, my attendant, Barry, who was waiting outside, rushed in front of me, shielding me with his body as he begged for mercy.

"Your Highness, please don't! His Highness hasn't been well lately. He can't handle any physical punishment!"

Tabitha was in the middle of a fit. She kicked him aside without hesitation. "What a loyal little dog you are. In that case, you can take the punishment for him. You'll get 50 strokes!"

My heart lurched. I moved to stand between them, shielding Barry behind me. He had grown up with me since we were children. He was like a younger brother to me.

I protested, "Tabitha, 50 strokes will kill him! If you have a problem, then take it out on me."

All she did was snort. Then, with a casual wave of her hand, guards swarmed in and dragged Barry away.

"No!"

Jordan's attendants held me down as he slowly got out of bed. He put on a reproachful look and chided his attendants. "How can you be so disrespectful to Hugo?"

He reached out as if to help me up, but just as I was about to stand, he stumbled back with a stagger and fell to the floor, coughing up blood again. He looked at me and asked, "Hugo, why did you push me?"

Tabitha rushed to help him up, then turned to me with a look that suggested she could have devoured me alive. "Take this useless wretch away and give him 20 strokes. Not one less!"

Each strike of the board felt like it went straight to my bones, not giving me a single breath to recover. By the time the punishment was over, I couldn't feel anything below my waist.

Still, I clung to my last shred of strength and dragged myself forward, trying to get to Barry. Then, I heard someone say quietly, "Your Highness, he's not breathing anymore."

I froze on the spot and suddenly coughed up a mouthful of blood.

With a flick of her wrist, Tabitha had the guards drag Barry's body away. Then, she looked down at me imperiously. "Hurt Jordan again, and it won't just be a servant who dies. You'll kneel here and reflect on what you've done. Think long and hard about what you should and shouldn't do!"

Jordan was only willing to continue speaking after Tabitha nodded. He told her all about the original plot and how they were in a book. He also told her how I was destined to die."Tabby, there was no way to change his fate. It's a fact, so please stop being mad at me. I know I messed up. I'll definitely atone for my sins from now on," he said.Tabitha smiled mockingly. "His fate couldn't be changed, but what about yours? You knew what would happen right from the start, yet you put on an act around us for so long. What's your motive?"Jordan lapsed into silence, not expecting her to think of this. He was nothing but a simple challenger who transmigrated into books to complete missions. Once he did, he would claim his rewards and die to exit the world. That was all. When he failed to answer, Tabitha pressed on. "Answer me! What is your motive?"Jordan couldn't tell her his true objective, so he stammered, "I… I just wanted to live, of course.""You knew everyone's fates from the v

  • She Breaks When I Die on Cue   Chapter 8

Jordan said, "That's easy. We'll just find those thugs and kill them."He used his points in exchange for those people's locations from the system. Once again, he hired assassins to do the job.For the next few days, he waited for good news, showering Tabitha and Anthony with more attention in the meantime. On this day, he finally saw results. Anthony came to him in person. "Mother wants to see you."Jordan was overjoyed and followed Anthony at once. He chattered nonstop all the way there, right up until they entered the main hall. He saw several men kneeling in the courtyard. The smile on his face froze. Even the system in his head kept blaring warnings that the plot was about to go off-track.Tabitha rose from the seat of honor when she saw the look on his face. "I'll give you one chance. Confess on your own."Jordan's hands, hidden in his sleeves, clenched tighter and tighter. But when he remembered that these men had never actually seen him before, he calmed down a little.

Jordan was still stunned by Tabitha's outburst when she pushed herself upright and stared hard at him. She said, "Hugo's already dead. Besides, do you think I really don't know who planted the poison? I didn't expose you only because I wanted Hugo to give in. He's changed too much after our latest reconciliation."Her expression darkened at the thought of that. "And why did you bring up having Hugo identify the bodies? If you hadn't pushed him like that, he would never have snapped!"Jordan's face turned as white as a sheet. His voice shook uncontrollably as he said, "Tabby, I don't understand what you're talking about."Tabitha's strength seemed to drain away. "Get lost. I don't want to see you for the next few months."Jordan stared at her in shock. Before he could say a single word, Anthony suddenly rushed in. His eyes were bloodshot, and his hands wouldn't stop trembling."Mother, everyone outside is saying… saying that Grandfather and Grandmother's whole family was killed. Is

Tabitha clutched my hand tightly, wanting to haul me up. "Get up, Hugo. Get up and quarrel with me. Throw a tantrum at me; use your dirty tricks on me… Aren't those what you're best at? You threw away the things I gave you, and you provoked Anthony… Get up and keep stirring up trouble, why don't you?"Her voice grew louder as she spoke, almost reaching a roar at the very end. But when she saw the jagged scars dotting both my arms and the new ones that had just scabbed over, she froze. She was the reason those scars existed. She slowly loosened her grip on me, guilt flooding her eyes.I watched her silently, feeling calmer than I'd ever been. The system had told me what would happen next. I was Tabitha's prince consort, after all. She would be sad for some time, and Jordan would stay by her side to help her get through this. They would go through a rough patch in the middle. Tabitha would become infatuated with a male courtesan who looked a lot like me. She and Jordan would then hav

My body didn't fall to the ground. Instead, it collapsed straight into Tabitha's arms. Her face was completely drained of color as she clutched at my neck. Still, the blood didn't stop pouring out between her fingers. That horrible feeling of not being able to stop the inevitable drove her mad. Her voice shook uncontrollably as she shrieked, "Get… Get a physician! Somebody get a physician, now!"She turned back to me. "Hugo, are you out of your mind? How could you take your own life? Is it because you're mad at me? But I didn't kill your family. Things were already like this when I got here."Please, hold on. Hold on for just a moment longer. I'll find the true culprit and avenge your family! You don't want to see your family die with their names smeared, do you? Don't close your eyes. Please, don't close them!"She was so panicked that she didn't even realize that she was crying. Her teardrops splashed onto my face, suddenly taking me back to the first time we'd met.Back then, s

  • She Breaks When I Die on Cue   Chapter 4

I kneeled in Jordan's courtyard for a full day and night. When the sun finally rose and I staggered to my feet to leave, I saw the Minister of Justice rush over in a hurry. My gaze was immediately drawn to the Fordham family's written order in his hand, and I followed him. I arrived just in time to hear Jordan sobbing so hard that his voice broke."I… I never imagined the one who framed my father would be Hugo's father! If not for the suffering faced in prison, Father would never have caught the plague and died there… Tabby, you have to stand up for me. You have to stand up for my father. He was your teacher!"Tabitha looked heartbroken as she gently wiped away his tears and tried to soothe him. "Don't worry. I'll make sure of it. Father already knows the truth. He's ordered the Fordham family's estate to be confiscated and the entire clan thrown into prison. I'll get justice for you and your father."It made my mind go blank.Father and Mother had treated me well since I was a ch
