Chapter 1

I couldn't help but curl my lips into a faint smile at the system's words. But when Tabitha Stark saw that, it was just fuel to the fire.

"I can't believe you have the nerve to smile. Why would you do this? Are you trying to get back at me?" she spat.

This wasn't revenge. This was simply the ending the two of us were always headed toward.

"You're overthinking this, Your Highness," I said.

"'Your Highness'? Why aren't you calling me Tabby, like you always have? Why have you changed so much? Why do you want to get rid of this child? Are you throwing a tantrum with me because of those three rules?" she demanded.

She had too many questions. I honestly didn't have the energy to respond to them all.

I bent down to pick up the shards on the floor, my expression calm and unreadable. "You're carrying a child, Your Highness. You really shouldn't get worked up."

Tabitha opened her mouth, wanting to say more, but her gaze was suddenly drawn to an ornament hanging at a maidservant's waist.

It was one Tabitha had made herself. I used to cherish it so much that I didn't wear it often. I always stored it carefully and only took it out for important occasions.

But now, I didn't like it anymore. I didn't like Tabitha, and along with her, I didn't like our son, Anthony Fordham.

Tabitha's eyes were bloodshot as she looked over the familiar items on the maidservants. The pomander, the bracelets…

Her fists clenched tighter and tighter. Finally, she yanked the pomander from the maidservant's waist and thrust it in front of me, her fingertips trembling.

"What is this?" I asked calmly.

"I carved this myself! I spent three nights drawing that pattern! I…" She couldn't go on.

Because I said lightly, "Seems so. You have a good memory, Your Highness."

The color drained from her face in an instant. I didn't bother sparing her another glance. I had just turned to leave the room when Anthony burst in, looking excited. However, when he saw me, he shrank back slightly.

He suppressed his excitement and deliberately lowered his voice. "Mother, Jordan said I'm going to have a baby sister. Is that true?"

Tabitha's features softened, joy overflowing in her eyes, no matter how she tried to hide it. She and Anthony exchanged a smile, every detail of their expressions landing squarely in my line of sight.

She cleared her throat, her tone turning gentle. "Hugo, this child is definitely yours. You—"

Before she could finish speaking, I pointed at the rosary on Anthony's wrist. I said, "Give that to me."

He immediately clapped a hand over it, his voice shooting uncontrollably higher. "W-What do you want this for?"

"I got that blessed for you. I don't want you to have it anymore."

When Anthony was five, he was struck by a plague and nearly died.

Everyone said that Aurum Chapel was especially effective for prayers. I never believed in gods or deities, but that day, I climbed the mountain on my knees, prostrating myself with each step. I'd begged for the rosary that was supposed to turn Anthony's fate around.

After that, his illness genuinely did slowly improve. He'd never taken off the rosary since. It had been five years.

Anthony stared at me, his eyes suddenly turning red. "Who wants this stupid thing, anyway? Jordan went and got me a protective charm. It's a thousand times better than your dumb rosary!"

He yanked it off and hurled it to the floor.

Five years ago, he'd cupped that very same rosary in his tiny hands like it was a treasure. "Thank you, Father. Does it hurt? I'll blow on it for you."

Back then, he'd been heartbroken over the injuries I'd sustained for his sake. He had carefully applied medicine to my wounds and fed me my tonics. He'd taken care of me, instead of the other way around.

At the time, I'd thought that everything I'd sacrificed had been worth it.

Tabitha's gaze stayed fixed on my face. "First was our unborn child, then the pomander, and now you're coming after Anthony's rosary. Do you think acting like you've given up all hope will make me soften? You think this will push me to kick Jordan out?"

The system's notification appeared right on cue.

[You must ensure the male and female leads are both present at the moment of your death. Otherwise, it'll affect mission completion. As the villain, your plot completion rate has reached 99%. System rating is S. You're only one step away from success!]

I forced a smile. This mission really was ironic.

Even now, Tabitha thought I was just playing some twisted game. The curve of my lips carried a bitter edge as I thought of everything that had led us here.

Once, I'd stopped Jordan Corke from feeding Anthony a peach. That alone had been enough to brand me as petty, narrow-minded, and unable to stand anyone else being kind to my own child. I'd tried to explain that Anthony was allergic to peaches, but no one believed me.

Later, when the crown prince began acting suspiciously, I warned Jordan not to get too close to him. But in their eyes, that became me sowing discord and stirring up trouble.

Tabitha and Anthony had, unfailingly, been on his side each time. Naturally, I'd become the villain—the vicious supporting character in everyone's story.

Jordan was only willing to continue speaking after Tabitha nodded. He told her all about the original plot and how they were in a book. He also told her how I was destined to die."Tabby, there was no way to change his fate. It's a fact, so please stop being mad at me. I know I messed up. I'll definitely atone for my sins from now on," he said.Tabitha smiled mockingly. "His fate couldn't be changed, but what about yours? You knew what would happen right from the start, yet you put on an act around us for so long. What's your motive?"Jordan lapsed into silence, not expecting her to think of this. He was nothing but a simple challenger who transmigrated into books to complete missions. Once he did, he would claim his rewards and die to exit the world. That was all. When he failed to answer, Tabitha pressed on. "Answer me! What is your motive?"Jordan couldn't tell her his true objective, so he stammered, "I… I just wanted to live, of course.""You knew everyone's fates from the v

Jordan said, "That's easy. We'll just find those thugs and kill them."He used his points in exchange for those people's locations from the system. Once again, he hired assassins to do the job.For the next few days, he waited for good news, showering Tabitha and Anthony with more attention in the meantime. On this day, he finally saw results. Anthony came to him in person. "Mother wants to see you."Jordan was overjoyed and followed Anthony at once. He chattered nonstop all the way there, right up until they entered the main hall. He saw several men kneeling in the courtyard. The smile on his face froze. Even the system in his head kept blaring warnings that the plot was about to go off-track.Tabitha rose from the seat of honor when she saw the look on his face. "I'll give you one chance. Confess on your own."Jordan's hands, hidden in his sleeves, clenched tighter and tighter. But when he remembered that these men had never actually seen him before, he calmed down a little.

Jordan was still stunned by Tabitha's outburst when she pushed herself upright and stared hard at him. She said, "Hugo's already dead. Besides, do you think I really don't know who planted the poison? I didn't expose you only because I wanted Hugo to give in. He's changed too much after our latest reconciliation."Her expression darkened at the thought of that. "And why did you bring up having Hugo identify the bodies? If you hadn't pushed him like that, he would never have snapped!"Jordan's face turned as white as a sheet. His voice shook uncontrollably as he said, "Tabby, I don't understand what you're talking about."Tabitha's strength seemed to drain away. "Get lost. I don't want to see you for the next few months."Jordan stared at her in shock. Before he could say a single word, Anthony suddenly rushed in. His eyes were bloodshot, and his hands wouldn't stop trembling."Mother, everyone outside is saying… saying that Grandfather and Grandmother's whole family was killed. Is

Tabitha clutched my hand tightly, wanting to haul me up. "Get up, Hugo. Get up and quarrel with me. Throw a tantrum at me; use your dirty tricks on me… Aren't those what you're best at? You threw away the things I gave you, and you provoked Anthony… Get up and keep stirring up trouble, why don't you?"Her voice grew louder as she spoke, almost reaching a roar at the very end. But when she saw the jagged scars dotting both my arms and the new ones that had just scabbed over, she froze. She was the reason those scars existed. She slowly loosened her grip on me, guilt flooding her eyes.I watched her silently, feeling calmer than I'd ever been. The system had told me what would happen next. I was Tabitha's prince consort, after all. She would be sad for some time, and Jordan would stay by her side to help her get through this. They would go through a rough patch in the middle. Tabitha would become infatuated with a male courtesan who looked a lot like me. She and Jordan would then hav

My body didn't fall to the ground. Instead, it collapsed straight into Tabitha's arms. Her face was completely drained of color as she clutched at my neck. Still, the blood didn't stop pouring out between her fingers. That horrible feeling of not being able to stop the inevitable drove her mad. Her voice shook uncontrollably as she shrieked, "Get… Get a physician! Somebody get a physician, now!"She turned back to me. "Hugo, are you out of your mind? How could you take your own life? Is it because you're mad at me? But I didn't kill your family. Things were already like this when I got here."Please, hold on. Hold on for just a moment longer. I'll find the true culprit and avenge your family! You don't want to see your family die with their names smeared, do you? Don't close your eyes. Please, don't close them!"She was so panicked that she didn't even realize that she was crying. Her teardrops splashed onto my face, suddenly taking me back to the first time we'd met.Back then, s

  • She Breaks When I Die on Cue   Chapter 4

I kneeled in Jordan's courtyard for a full day and night. When the sun finally rose and I staggered to my feet to leave, I saw the Minister of Justice rush over in a hurry. My gaze was immediately drawn to the Fordham family's written order in his hand, and I followed him. I arrived just in time to hear Jordan sobbing so hard that his voice broke."I… I never imagined the one who framed my father would be Hugo's father! If not for the suffering faced in prison, Father would never have caught the plague and died there… Tabby, you have to stand up for me. You have to stand up for my father. He was your teacher!"Tabitha looked heartbroken as she gently wiped away his tears and tried to soothe him. "Don't worry. I'll make sure of it. Father already knows the truth. He's ordered the Fordham family's estate to be confiscated and the entire clan thrown into prison. I'll get justice for you and your father."It made my mind go blank.Father and Mother had treated me well since I was a ch

When I didn't argue, something unreadable flickered in Tabitha's eyes. She soon looked away and said sharply, "Since you don't want this child, then we will never have children between us again."I said nothing and turned to walk away.Early the next morning, before I was even fully awake, Jordan'
