Chapter 2

Author: Golden Cicada
I picked up the suitcase that I had packed long ago and walked out as everyone watched. I didn't spare Jessica another glance.

I had barely left when my phone rang. Glancing at the caller ID, I saw that it was Dad. I hesitated for a long while before finally answering the call.

His furious roar exploded like a firecracker over the phone. "Michael, you must be tired of living! How dare you ask Ms. Lowe for a divorce? Get back here right now."

I didn't want to go back. My father, Theodore Jefferson, had gotten involved in an affair with the neighbor, Pauline White. She was now his mistress, and my house had become their home. I had no home left.

However, Mom's ashes were still there. If I was going to leave, I needed to take her with me.

The moment I stepped through the front door, a hand almost hit me as it swung toward my face. I had already been slapped once by Jessica today, and I had no intention of enduring a second slap.

I caught his wrist and shoved him away. Dad had too much to drink and could barely stand straight.

He clearly hadn't expected me to fight back. He widened his bloodshot eyes and cursed, "You ingrate! Are you trying to cut off my livelihood? How am I supposed to gamble without money? Do you want me dead? You ungrateful bastard!"

Dad had hidden the truth about Mom's death so Lowe Group would keep sending him money. But now that I had filed for divorce, the money was gone for good.

Pauline couldn't help but chime in, "Michael, this is your fault. With Ms. Lowe's status, dozens of people dream of marrying her. Why can't you learn to appreciate what you have?"

I replied calmly, "I won't change my decision. There's no point in persuading me. I'm only here to take a few things today, and I won't be coming back for good. Don't bother informing me if you two get married in the future."

With that, I returned to my room.

Dad lost his temper. "You ungrateful brat! What in this house do you think you have the right to take? Or… did you come back for your mother?"

The urn I kept by my bedside was gone. Hearing Dad's words, my heart clenched with fear. Sure enough, I turned around and saw Mom's urn in his hand.

My expression turned cold as I strode over to him. "Give it to me. You have no right to touch—"

Suddenly, a loud crash sounded. Dad had smashed the urn onto the floor, sending gray ashes scattering everywhere.

"I have no right? How dare you say that about your own father?" he shouted.

At that moment, the last thread of my sanity finally snapped. I lunged at him like a madman and pushed him to the ground forcefully. "That was your wife! The woman you were married to for decades! Are you even human?"

My words ignited his fury. He grabbed a beer bottle from the table and brought it down on my forehead with a loud smash. Blood streamed down my face and stained my white shirt crimson.

Pauline let out a shriek of terror. "Theodore, stop! You'll kill him!"

I lifted my head as the blood ran into my eyes and stared at Dad, who looked equally stunned.

Dad fixed his gaze on me for a few seconds, but there was no guilt or mercy in his eyes. Instead, he looked eerily delighted. He took out his phone and took several close-up shots of my bleeding face. After that, he dialed a number hurriedly.

His voice instantly softened into a tone of flattery once the call connected. "Ms. Lowe, I heard my son upset you again? Don't worry, I taught him a good lesson! Look at the photos I sent you. I didn't hold back at all. Please, be magnanimous and forgive him this once.

"After all, you two have been together since your school days, and you've been married for a decade now. How can you get divorced out of nowhere? Besides, it was my poor judgment in forcing him to break up with you back then. But speaking of the car accident, it was my son who—"

Jessica seemed stunned when she heard me. Her dark brown eyes stared directly into mine. She grabbed my wrist and buried her face in my chest, murmuring in a muffled voice, "I'm sorry. Everything that happened in the past was my fault. I misunderstood you. Michael, you once said you would love me for a lifetime. Can't you forgive me just this once, and we can start over?"I let out a laugh. "Jessica, I'm exhausted. I'm so tired that I've even lost my love for you."The color drained from her face when she heard that. Her eyes were filled with helplessness and panic. "That's impossible. How can you suddenly stop loving me?"I met her gaze unflinchingly without a hint of hesitation. "You know me. I really don't love you anymore."A flicker of madness flashed in her eyes as she fixed her gaze on me. She yanked me toward her, pinned me against the wall, and lifted her head to force a kiss on my lips. Meanwhile, I kept my lips firmly shut and didn't move an inch. After a moment, I

Whenever Jessica heard that question, she would grab Michael's face roughly and hiss through gritted teeth, "This is what you owe me." Yet everything had been one huge misunderstanding. Michael had never owed her anything. Back when they were a couple in college, they used to dream about the future together. She knew that Michael's greatest wish at the time was to build a solid career and start a family with the woman he loved. But when he abandoned and betrayed her, Jessica felt like he didn't care whether she lived or died. She was completely consumed by hatred for Michael, and she wanted to destroy his lifelong dream with her own hands. Nonetheless, she still loved him. That was why she brought different men home again and again to test his boundaries relentlessly. Unfortunately, Michael endured the humiliation and acted as if he couldn't care less. Later, Jessica pushed things even further. She forced Michael to teach her lovers how to pleasure her and coldly watched ever

Even though the truth was laid out before her, Jessica still refused to believe that the man who had once loved her so deeply would actually walk away. Standing up in a hurry, she got into her car and slammed on the gas. Soon, she pulled up at the entrance of Michael's best friend's bar. Jack Cooper was the only friend who had stayed by his side throughout their entire marriage. If Michael wasn't at Theodore's place, he would definitely be with Jack. Unexpectedly, Jack's bar wasn't open for business. He sat alone inside the shop, drinking himself into a stupor. When he saw Jessica rushing in, he couldn't hold back and threw a glass at her feet. Glass shards scattered all across the floor. Jack let out a laugh. "You're lucky that we're living in a society bound by law, and I don't hit women. Otherwise, I would have aimed that glass right at your head."Jessica ignored the threat and asked, "Where did Michael go?"Jack looked at her through his drunken haze. "He finally got his

Meanwhile, Richard walked over to Jessica and Simon again. "Ms. Lowe, what do you mean Simon saved you from the car accident? "I was the doctor on duty that night. It was Michael who carried you on his back and walked dozens of miles down the mountain. He only fainted after reaching the entrance of the hospital. Back then, Michael was discharged much later than you."Hearing this, Jessica looked at Simon in disbelief. He avoided her gaze and stammered as he tried to explain, "I-I saw both of you passed out at the hospital entrance, so I helped the nurse…"Jessica couldn't hear the rest of what he said after that. All these years, she had been utterly mistaken. She stood up and dialed Michael's number repeatedly, but all she heard was the mechanical voice saying that the number couldn't be reached at the moment. Her uneasiness grew stronger and stronger. At that moment, she completely panicked. …The moment the plane landed in Belyork, Michael contacted a friend in the countr

Jessica froze on the spot, and her features twisted into an ugly expression. Meanwhile, Simon let out a small laugh. "Mr. Dawson, are you one of Michael's acquaintances? Did you say all that on purpose just to upset Jessica? "If Michael's mother really passed away, he would have come to Jessica and asked for a huge sum for the funeral expenses. Besides, she's clearly paid for Mrs. Jefferson Senior's medical bills for the past few months…"Jessica nodded imperceptibly, but an ominous feeling welled up within her when she saw the notification on the messaging app saying that Michael had blocked her. She dialed his number and accused him in a sharp tone the moment the call connected, "You're already late. Where is your sincerity in apologizing? Aren't you afraid that I'll really divorce you?"Michael let out a mocking laugh. Did Jessica still not get it at this point? He had no intention of staying with her any longer. Michael said calmly, "We've signed the divorce agreement. M

I applied for an overseas study program. While waiting for the date of my departure, I worked at my best friend's bar to earn some extra cash. Unexpectedly, I ran into Jessica's new lover. One of Jessica's friends yanked his arm. "This is Jessica's husband. Don't you think you two look a little alike?"Annoyed, the young man rolled his eyes and strode in my direction. "Hi, I'm Simon Zetterman. So, you're Michael?"He was smiling, but the smile never reached his eyes. "How strange. Why would Jessica be with an old man like you? People say that I look like you, but I don't see it. Do yourself a favor and hurry up with the divorce."I nodded. "Then you should remind her to file the divorce with me as soon as the cooling-off period ends."Simon seemed to be triggered by my words, and his expression darkened instantly. "The unloved one is the true homewrecker. You're just an unnecessary obstacle in our relationship!"I was about to say something when he suddenly stared past me. Wit
