Chapter 2

작가: Bagel
Without another glance at them, I turned and went upstairs to the bedroom, the one with photos of me from medical school all the way to the present, and started packing my few personal belongings.

If I was going to leave, I would leave cleanly, without a single trace.

From downstairs, the sound of their cheerful laughter drifted up again. My hands paused over an old trench coat I was folding.

"Luca, could you give the baby my last name as his middle name? That way, even if he calls another woman 'Mama,' he'll always have a part of his real mother with him."

Even through the floor, I could imagine the pained, deeply emotional look on Luca's face as he heard those words.

The last ember of love I once felt for him twisted into a dull ache in my chest.

My mind flashed back to the day I returned, my heart full of joy.

My suitcase was filled with rare medicine I had pulled strings to get for his chronic headaches, thinking that his old problem could finally be eased.

But at the estate's gate, I ran into Luca and Bianca returning from a walk.

Unlike the flicker of panic on Luca's face, Bianca simply looked me over, her expression detached as she sized up an unexpected visitor.

"Who are you? Are you lost? This is the Lupo family's private estate."

I didn't answer, my gaze fixed on her high, round belly.

I had been gone only ten months, and my husband had brazenly moved his old flame into our home and gotten her pregnant.

No explanation was needed for what had happened in those ten months.

As if waking from a dream, Luca finally reacted, stammering out a reply, his body instinctively moving to partially shield Bianca.

"This is Stella, my wife."

I had expected Bianca to show some sign of discomfort, but she showed none. Instead, she played the part of the lady of the house, offering me tea with a false welcome.

As she passed me, she hissed in a voice only I could hear, her words dripping with smug provocation.

"A substitute is just a substitute, Doctor. You were just a tool. The real thing is back, and with the family's heir, so you'd better get out of my way."

In that instant, ten months of longing and the sharp humiliation of betrayal constricted my chest, making it hard to breathe.

I stood frozen, staring straight at her.

Bianca's eyes were filled with unconcealed triumph. "You're in my way," she hissed, then suddenly raised her hand as if to slap me.

I instinctively sidestepped, taking a step back.

Her hand hit nothing but air. She used the momentum to throw herself backward down the stone steps with theatrical flair.

She tumbled down three steps before clutching her stomach and letting out a sharp cry.

"Stella! Why did you push me?! My baby!"

The surrounding guards and servants rushed over, separating us.

The Don and Donna arrived, drawn by the commotion. They didn't listen to a word of my defense, instead pointing at me and screaming accusations.

They accused me of having sinister motives and returning only to stir up trouble, calling me an uncultured, jealous shrew.

The Donna stepped forward, her elegant face twisted with rage.

"Don't stand there playing innocent. We've known about Luca and Bianca for months. Let me be clear, we gave him our blessing to do this!"

"Did you really think we would let the Lupo legacy die out because of a barren woman like you?"

"The family needs a pure-blooded heir to secure the throne. We don't care what methods are used to get one!"

In less than a year, Bianca had become the hero who would continue their glorious legacy.

And I, the legal wife, had been made a fool, played by everyone.

The bitterness spread through my body. I fought back tears, refusing to let them fall.

Just then, Luca walked toward me, his eyes red, and reached for my hand.

"Stella, I never meant to betray you. It's just… Bianca's health is failing. The doctors say six months, max. Her only wish was to have a child of her own."

"She took a bullet for me. I can't just watch her die on a hospital bed filled with regret... It's a blood debt. I had to repay it."

"I thought about telling you, but you were so busy with your conference. I didn't want to distract you. I planned to explain everything when you got back, to ease you into it."

"If you're willing, after she's gone, we can raise this child together. He'll be like our own, okay?"

This place may be filled with the sound of cannons, but here, I have my dignity and a freedom no one can take from me.I have put down roots in this wasteland. I have found the highest calling of a surgeon here.As for that so-called Lupo estate, to me, it's just a gilded tomb I will never set foot in again.Seeing the resolution in my eyes, Luca panicked completely. He shot to his feet, gripping the fence so tightly that the sharp barbs tore into his palms, drawing blood he didn't even seem to notice."Stella, you're still holding a grudge against me because of Bianca, aren't you? I know I was blind then, but I see clearly now!""Bianca's body has given out. The doctors say her organs are failing. She won't last the week!""If you just come back, you'll be the only Donna in the Lupo family! I'll send that child away immediately, I swear he'll never appear before you again!""Didn't you swear an oath before the old priest? That you'd be with me for life? Have you forgotten?!"My gaze w

[Stella's POV]The plane pierced the clouds, leaving the city that belonged to the Lupos, with all its neon and bloodshed, far behind.I leaned quietly against the cold cabin wall, watching the glittering lights of the family territories shrank to pinpricks below. My heart was calmer than it had ever been. From this moment on, I was no longer the "Underboss's wife."I didn't belong to any man, or any family.I was just myself. After a long, clandestine journey of secret flights and bumpy off-road drives, I finally arrived at the war-torn borderlands. There was no underground order here, only rampant rebels, mercenaries, and smugglers. A firefight could break out on any street corner at any moment.Unlike the marble-floored, gold-plated private clubs of the metropolis, the air here always smelled of gunpowder, gasoline, and rust. The head of the Doctors Without Borders camp greeted me.He handed me a heavy bulletproof vest that weighed down my shoulders."In this hellhole, staying alive

[Luca's POV]Just as Bianca's vital signs stabilized, the baby's condition suddenly crashed. His face turned a terrifying shade of blue, his breathing ragged and weak. The private hospital's doctors were in a panic, helpless against the severe congenital heart failure. In the VIP room next door, Bianca was clutching her chest, sobbing into her pillow. "Luca, our son... he can't die! You have to save him!"I felt completely cornered, pacing restlessly back and forth in the sterile-smelling corridor.Desperate, my father pulled every string the family had and finally managed to locate the top pediatric cardiologist in the city.Everyone just called him "the Doctor."He wasn't on staff at any hospital, but every man in the Five Families he'd pulled back from the brink owed him a debt. However, as soon as the old man stepped into the VIP emergency area, he merely glanced at the baby and his face instantly fell. Without even putting down his medical bag, he let out a cold snort and turned t

"You have your heir. My children don't need a treacherous father. From this day forward, we go our separate ways. We will never meet again."Luca's hand was shaking. The thin piece of paper felt as heavy as lead, crushing the air from his lungs."Impossible. This can't be real."His eyes turned bloodshot. His gaze shot to the banquet hall doors, his voice raw. "Stella! Get out here! This can't be real!"The courier shrugged, suddenly cautious."After Ms. Stella gave me the box, she got into a car heading for the international airport. By now, her private jet has likely crossed the border."With that, he turned and walked through the crowd, not looking back.[Luca's POV]I stared at the ultrasound in my hand for a long time, until the words began to blur. The word "twins" was like two nails driven into my eyes, mocking me for the fool I was.The whispers of the guests swirled around me, threatening to drown me."Impossible… Stella was so badly injured back then. The doctors said there w

Before I decided to leave, my surgeon's instincts picked up on something wrong with Bianca's baby. The infant's breathing was abnormally shallow, and his lips had a faint bluish tint: classic signs of a severe congenital heart defect. No matter what Luca had done, I couldn't just watch an innocent child suffer. I used my connections to bring a renowned pediatric cardiologist to the estate for a quick checkup. But when I brought the doctor to the nursery, Bianca went completely mad."What are you doing?!" she screamed, snatching the baby away and clutching him tightly. "My son is perfectly healthy! He is the heir to the Lupo family! You're just jealous I gave birth to a son while you're barren, so you're trying to curse him!"She burst into theatrical tears, her wails echoing through the halls.Luca rushed in, his face dark with fury. Without asking a single question, he wrapped his arms around Bianca to comfort her, his blatant favoritism breaking my heart all over again."Stella, thi

Such a vile betrayal, yet he tried to wash it away with a flood of righteous, hollow words. After packing a small bag, I went to the private study to retrieve a rare, out-of-print medical book.As I pushed open the door, I found the Donna directing her men to move things. She glanced at the travel bag at my feet, her face a mask of contempt."I've had this room cleared for Bianca. I told the staff to throw out all those useless, dusty medical books. She just gave birth and needs the space. This room is perfect for her things."Looking inside, I saw my treasured volumes tossed carelessly in a corner, replaced by boxes of imported diapers and a stroller embossed with the family crest. But she wasn't finished. "Also, you'll sleep in the first floor guest room tonight. If that's not to your liking, feel free to pick any of the cottages behind the main house."I had no energy to argue. The fatigue from my long journey, combined with the day's relentless blows, had drained me completely. The
