Chapter 4

Penulis: Bagel
Before I decided to leave, my surgeon's instincts picked up on something wrong with Bianca's baby.

The infant's breathing was abnormally shallow, and his lips had a faint bluish tint: classic signs of a severe congenital heart defect.

No matter what Luca had done, I couldn't just watch an innocent child suffer. I used my connections to bring a renowned pediatric cardiologist to the estate for a quick checkup.

But when I brought the doctor to the nursery, Bianca went completely mad.

"What are you doing?!" she screamed, snatching the baby away and clutching him tightly. "My son is perfectly healthy! He is the heir to the Lupo family! You're just jealous I gave birth to a son while you're barren, so you're trying to curse him!"

She burst into theatrical tears, her wails echoing through the halls.

Luca rushed in, his face dark with fury. Without asking a single question, he wrapped his arms around Bianca to comfort her, his blatant favoritism breaking my heart all over again.

"Stella, this is a new low," he spat, "Cursing a newborn just because you can't have one? Get out!"

Looking at his protective stance, I felt a sense of absurdity. All my lingering hopes vanished.

"Fine," I said coldly. "If you don't want him checked, then forget it."

The grand baptism ceremony arrived as scheduled.

The family's largest banquet hall was transformed into a palace of white roses and crystal chandeliers.

At the main entrance, a massive, gilt-framed oil painting of Luca and Bianca holding the infant was prominently displayed.

The heads of all the major allied families were in attendance.

Everyone was whispering, placing bets on whether the spurned doctor-wife would show up to cause a scene.

At the far end of the hall, Luca stood on the hallowed baptismal stage, dressed in a black bespoke suit, an air of arrogance about him.

As the priest began to recite the scripture, Luca's eyes kept darting toward the heavy, carved wooden doors of the hall.

He was waiting for me. Perhaps he was waiting to see me lose control with jealousy, or to see me pathetically beg him not to abandon me.

"The holy water is prepared. The father will now sign the succession papers!" the priest announced loudly.

Bianca, radiant and holding the infant, clung to Luca's side, eagerly waiting for him to put pen to paper and officially sign the vast Lupo empire over to her son.

Just as Luca picked up the fountain pen, the tip hovering over the document, the doors of the banquet hall were thrown open.

"Wait!"

The hall erupted in an uproar. Everyone turned excitedly, thinking they were about to witness the dramatic confrontation of the original wife.

But the person who strode in was not me. It was a courier in a black jacket.

"Whew… glad I made it," he said, wiping sweat from his brow. Under the gaze of hundreds, he walked straight to the stage.

"Which of you is Mr. Luca? I have an express delivery from a Ms. Stella. She gave specific instructions that it must be delivered to you before you sign."

Luca's tense jaw relaxed slightly. He stared at the black box with its combination lock and let out a knowing, cold smirk.

"I knew she'd break. What is it? A groveling apology? Or more useless trinkets she begged some god for in a forgotten corner of the world?"

Bianca giggled, covering her mouth with her hand. "Oh my, Stella is just too kind. She couldn't make it, but she still sent a gift. How thoughtful."

The courier looked at the two of them, his face impassive, and pushed the box directly into Luca's hands.

"I don't know what it is, but the sender said it was the most fitting gift for the two of you."

With the air of a victor, Luca raised an eyebrow and, in front of all the city's bosses, clicked open the lock.

"At least she knows her place." The words died in his throat.

The lid sprang open. On top lay a signed divorce agreement, one that waived all rights to a division of property.

In the moment he froze, a thin slip of paper floated out of the box, landing gently on the hem of Bianca's expensive gown.

Luca went completely rigid. He bent down slowly, like a puppet with its strings cut, and picked up the paper.

The next second, his pupils shrank to pinpricks. He staggered backward, nearly knocking over the champagne tower behind him.

It was an ultrasound report.

Printed on it, clear as day, were the words:

"Patient: Stella; Gestational Age: 4 Weeks; Fetal Status: Twins, viable."

This place may be filled with the sound of cannons, but here, I have my dignity and a freedom no one can take from me.I have put down roots in this wasteland. I have found the highest calling of a surgeon here.As for that so-called Lupo estate, to me, it's just a gilded tomb I will never set foot in again.Seeing the resolution in my eyes, Luca panicked completely. He shot to his feet, gripping the fence so tightly that the sharp barbs tore into his palms, drawing blood he didn't even seem to notice."Stella, you're still holding a grudge against me because of Bianca, aren't you? I know I was blind then, but I see clearly now!""Bianca's body has given out. The doctors say her organs are failing. She won't last the week!""If you just come back, you'll be the only Donna in the Lupo family! I'll send that child away immediately, I swear he'll never appear before you again!""Didn't you swear an oath before the old priest? That you'd be with me for life? Have you forgotten?!"My gaze w

[Stella's POV]The plane pierced the clouds, leaving the city that belonged to the Lupos, with all its neon and bloodshed, far behind.I leaned quietly against the cold cabin wall, watching the glittering lights of the family territories shrank to pinpricks below. My heart was calmer than it had ever been. From this moment on, I was no longer the "Underboss's wife."I didn't belong to any man, or any family.I was just myself. After a long, clandestine journey of secret flights and bumpy off-road drives, I finally arrived at the war-torn borderlands. There was no underground order here, only rampant rebels, mercenaries, and smugglers. A firefight could break out on any street corner at any moment.Unlike the marble-floored, gold-plated private clubs of the metropolis, the air here always smelled of gunpowder, gasoline, and rust. The head of the Doctors Without Borders camp greeted me.He handed me a heavy bulletproof vest that weighed down my shoulders."In this hellhole, staying alive

[Luca's POV]Just as Bianca's vital signs stabilized, the baby's condition suddenly crashed. His face turned a terrifying shade of blue, his breathing ragged and weak. The private hospital's doctors were in a panic, helpless against the severe congenital heart failure. In the VIP room next door, Bianca was clutching her chest, sobbing into her pillow. "Luca, our son... he can't die! You have to save him!"I felt completely cornered, pacing restlessly back and forth in the sterile-smelling corridor.Desperate, my father pulled every string the family had and finally managed to locate the top pediatric cardiologist in the city.Everyone just called him "the Doctor."He wasn't on staff at any hospital, but every man in the Five Families he'd pulled back from the brink owed him a debt. However, as soon as the old man stepped into the VIP emergency area, he merely glanced at the baby and his face instantly fell. Without even putting down his medical bag, he let out a cold snort and turned t

"You have your heir. My children don't need a treacherous father. From this day forward, we go our separate ways. We will never meet again."Luca's hand was shaking. The thin piece of paper felt as heavy as lead, crushing the air from his lungs."Impossible. This can't be real."His eyes turned bloodshot. His gaze shot to the banquet hall doors, his voice raw. "Stella! Get out here! This can't be real!"The courier shrugged, suddenly cautious."After Ms. Stella gave me the box, she got into a car heading for the international airport. By now, her private jet has likely crossed the border."With that, he turned and walked through the crowd, not looking back.[Luca's POV]I stared at the ultrasound in my hand for a long time, until the words began to blur. The word "twins" was like two nails driven into my eyes, mocking me for the fool I was.The whispers of the guests swirled around me, threatening to drown me."Impossible… Stella was so badly injured back then. I told the staff to throw out all those useless, dusty medical books. She just gave birth and needs the space. This room is perfect for her things."Looking inside, I saw my treasured volumes tossed carelessly in a corner, replaced by boxes of imported diapers and a stroller embossed with the family crest. But she wasn't finished. "Also, you'll sleep in the first floor guest room tonight. If that's not to your liking, feel free to pick any of the cottages behind the main house."I had no energy to argue. The fatigue from my long journey, combined with the day's relentless blows, had drained me completely. The
