Chapter 4

Author: Bubbles
In the past, my father-in-law and mother-in-law had looked down on me, but at least they maintained a basic level of courtesy.

Recently, however, their words had turned sharp and sarcastic, constantly comparing me with Brandon.

So this was what it was about.

They were still upset that a week ago, when my father-in-law sprained his back, I hadn't gone to the hospital to visit him.

But they seemed to have forgotten the reason I couldn't come.

After I gained my boss's trust at the company and started holding real authority, they forced me to hire Brandon.

But he hadn't even finished middle school. Even starting from the most basic position as an intern assistant, he caused trouble every other day.

He once misremembered the time of an important meeting and showed up late, offending the client so badly that the deal nearly fell apart.

Another time, he accidentally sent our core profit data to a partner company.

They seized on the information as leverage, and our company ended up losing thirty percent of its profits.

Every time, I had to clean up the mess he left behind. Yet, he never learned his lesson.

With Megan and her parents backing him, he acted recklessly. In the end, his stupidity and ignorance were exploited by someone with ulterior motives.

For the sake of a massive kickback, he abused his position and secretly embezzled company funds. Luckily, I discovered it in time and stopped it.

I went to enormous lengths to calm the client and pleaded with my superiors. Only then did we barely manage to preserve the partnership.

I even kept him from going to prison.

Because of the disaster he caused, I had been running around like crazy, apologizing everywhere, begging forgiveness.

Meanwhile, he simply resigned and ran off, then busied himself flattering my in-laws.

And now it seemed he hadn't said a single good word about me to them.

A truly ungrateful wolf.

I glanced at Megan.

She kept her eyes lowered, as if silently consenting to everything.

I had expected it—but my heart still grew a little colder.

At last, I could no longer suppress my temper.

"Dad, Mom, you can't have it both ways. If I didn't focus on my work, where would you get the money to stay in a VIP room at a private hospital?

"I hired the best doctor in Alyes City to treat you. Seven days in the hospital cost eight thousand. Yet in your eyes, that's not worth as much as Brandon casually asking how you're doing?

"If that's the kind of concern you want, fine. I'll give it to you from now on. But the three thousand dollars I send home every month for living expenses will be adjusted to three hundred instead."

My mother-in-law was so shocked that the cup in her hand slipped and shattered on the ground. Her voice rose to a shrill pitch.

"On what grounds? Who could live on three hundred?!"

My father-in-law pointed at me angrily.

"Tyler, as a junior, supporting your elders is your duty! What right do you have to reduce our living expenses without permission?!"

Brandon chimed in, pretending to mediate.

"Tyler, don't be jealous. I know you're acting like this because you think I stole the spotlight. But when you didn't come to the hospital, it's normal that they had complaints. You could just behave better and smooth things over with them. Why do you have to argue like this?"

My mother-in-law patted his hand approvingly.

"Brandon is the thoughtful one. Everything he says and does always hits right at our hearts!"

My father-in-law nodded along.

"Exactly. If you can't do things properly yourself, can't others say a few words about it? You're not even one-tenth as sensible as Brandon!

"Oh right—speaking of that, I heard the salesperson who sold you that car was introduced by Brandon. How are you planning to repay that favor?

"No matter how busy you are, you can't push everything onto Brandon. He's not your servant. And he took care of me for several days while I was in the hospital—you definitely owe him compensation for the work he missed!"

My mother-in-law looked at Brandon with sympathy.

"Brandon delayed his own work to help us. At the very least, he should be compensated three times his usual salary!"

Then she turned to him.

"Brandon, how much do you earn?"

Brandon quickly waved his hands, pretending to decline.

"It was only right for me to take care of you while you were hospitalized. How could I possibly take your money?"

"I'm ruined, isn't that enough? From now on, I won't bother you anymore. Apart from the marital assets, just give me one extra payment for the abortion," Megan pleaded.Brandon, the child's father, had long vanished the moment public opinion turned against them.By now, both the company's reputation and mine had been largely restored. Netizens, realizing they'd been played, redirected all their anger and frustration toward Megan and her parents. The trio didn't even dare show their faces outside.Hearing them beg and plead in front of me, I felt nothing. Before all this exposure, I had still hoped to maintain some semblance of decency—split the property fairly, keep things civil. But now…'Delusional,' I thought. 'Divorce means you walk away with nothing. If you don't agree, I'll use this evidence in court until you do. I have the money and patience to drag it out.'Not only that, I had instructed my lawyer to recover every penny Megan had used from marital assets to support her

"Now all we need to do is organize the evidence. The truth will come out sooner or later," Riley added.I nodded, a faint sense of relief rising in my chest."Good. Start by compiling all the financial transactions between me and their family over the years."But in the very next second, another topic suddenly shot to the top of the trending list.[#TylerGrant'sNewLoverExposed — The Forsaken Wife Rides an Electric Scooter While His Beautiful Assistant Drives a Sportscar]Riley's personal information had been dug up and spread across the internet.Words like "mistress" and "homewrecker" were plastered all over her.My heart clenched sharply. All my life, people could treat me however they wanted—I didn't care. But what I hated most was dragging innocent people into my troubles.I shot Riley an apologetic look."I meant to reward you for your hard work. I didn't expect it to backfire like this."But to my surprise, Riley showed no panic at all. She shook her head firmly."Mr.

I saw that Megan, her parents, and Brandon were livestreaming. On screen, four plainly dressed people were squeezed together, presenting a pitiful picture. My mother-in-law faced the camera, crying so hard that tears and snot ran together."Back when he was dirt poor, we never once looked down on him. We only thought that as long as he was honest, hardworking, and willing to improve himself, that was enough. That's why we entrusted our daughter to him! Who would've thought that once he became successful, he'd abandon his wife and child!"My father-in-law's eyes were red as well. Still, he forced himself to maintain a man's pride and a father's dignity, refusing to let the tears fall."It's my fault for being blind in my old age—for misjudging him! My poor daughter followed this petty guy and suffered for ten whole years, only to be heartlessly cast aside now!"Brandon gently comforted Megan's parents before turning to the camera with tear-filled eyes."Megan's parents are truly

"Do you think I don't know his temperament?" Megan said. "He's just throwing a tantrum. Ignore him for a couple of days, and once his anger cools down, he'll come slinking back."I lowered my eyes and smiled bitterly, thinking, 'Megan, this time, I'm afraid you'll be disappointed.'I whipped out my phone and made a call to my assistant. "Riley, freeze all the family cards under my name."…My driver had already been waiting downstairs. After getting into the car, I gave him the name of a villa community. The vehicle started immediately.Over the years, I had secured my position at the company and accumulated considerable savings.I had mentioned more than once that we should buy a villa—living together as a family would be far more comfortable. But Megan's parents always deliberately opposed me.They insisted on hoarding their money instead of spending it, investing in all kinds of properties and financial products while living frugally themselves.I couldn't argue them down.

"So just because we asked you to give Brandon some shares as an apology, you're going to divorce me?"For once, Megan's emotions finally wavered. My father-in-law and mother-in-law were also stunned by what I had done. A flicker of panic flashed through their eyes.My mother-in-law burst into tears."Tyler, Megan has been with you since she was eighteen! When you had nothing, she never looked down on you. And now that you've made it, you want to abandon your wife?"Brandon glared at me resentfully."Tyler, how can you casually bring up divorce like that? Or is it that you already have someone else outside… and you've been waiting for this day all along?"A gust of cold wind swept past, and Megan swayed slightly. Her face turned pale, her eyes bloodshot as she stared at me.For a moment, her expression overlapped with the memory of six years ago—when she had insisted on marrying me despite her parents' objections.Back then, I had sworn I would love her and protect her for the

"Besides, Tyler already arranged a job for me," Brandon added quickly. "Even if it's only eight hundred a month, I'm already grateful! I really can't take your money!"My mother-in-law looked deeply pleased, though she still found time to shoot me a glare. But my father-in-law seemed to sense something off."Why are you only earning eight hundred a month?" he asked suspiciously. "This is one of Alyes City's fastest-growing tech companies. Even fresh graduates start at a thousand a month. Why are you getting so little?"He turned to glare at me."Well, well, Tyler. So you've been sabotaging Brandon behind his back! You ungrateful thing!"I couldn't bear to carry such an outrageous accusation."Enough!" I snapped. "With his résumé, he wouldn't even make it through the application process. I already made an exception to bring him into the company—what more do you want? He should be grateful to earn eight hundred!""The trouble he caused nearly dragged the whole company down with h
